Playing in the dungeons, Arya overhears two men plotting against her father. She tells him what she heard and he decides the time has come for him to return to Winterfell. He delays his departure when given the opportunity to speak to the last person his predecessor spoke to, a whore who gave Robert another illegitimate son. The delay is costly however and leads to a serious injury. Catelyn meanwhile takes Tyrion to her sister Lysa, who also happens to be the John Arryn's widow.—garykmcd
- Among festering palace intrigues, partly overheard by Arya, Jaime Lannister is all too pleased to encourage king Robert to demand unconditional loyalty which Ned can't pledge, even if that costs him the Hand position as opinions differ how to handle the pretender's still hypothetical threat of seizing the throne by force. Things come to a tragic climax at the end of the already bloody royal tournament, including Ned's arrest. Meanwhile his wife lures Tyrion Lannister to illegal arrest as presumed son-killer in her native tribal Vake, but her mad, ruling sister aspires only a career for her weakling son. However the group is attacked by a hill tribe and Tyrion protects Catelyn. Meanwhile Ned discovers dangerous secrets in King's Landing and Arya overhears two men in the dungeons plotting a war and the assassination of her father. There is a meeting of King Robert and the small council and the king orders Ned to kill Daenerys, her unborn son and Viserys, but he replies that this would be a dishonorable assignment and resigns to his position of Handship. - Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) serves at the King's Landing as the commander of the King's guard. Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) is the son of Jeor Mormont and was banished from the Kingdom at the end of the last war for fighting against the house of Baratheon. He aligns with fellow exile Daenerys in Esso and becomes her trusted advisor, helping her adjust to her life as the Khaleesi to Khal Drogo. Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) is a member of House Greyjoy and is the sole surviving son and heir apparent of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands. At the end of Greyjoy's Rebellion against King Robert, Theon was taken to Winterfell as a hostage and ward to Lord Ned Stark. Robert tells Ned that marrying Cersei was Jon Arryn's idea. Robert's current squire Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon) is the cousin of Cersei. Varys meets Ned and tells him that Jon Ayyrn was poisoned, possibly by the Hugh of Vale, which is why he was killed in the tournament. They don't know who paid Vale. Hugh used the Tears of Lys. It is a rare and costly poison. It leaves no trace, clear and tasteless as water. Jon was a man of peace and the King's hand for 17 good yrs. Varys says he was killed, as he started asking questions. Gregor and Sandor still hate each other and frequently joust on the tournament grounds.
Arya witnesses Varys having a secret discussion with a council member from the Targaryen house. They discuss Khal Drogo attack on the Landing and that he wont attack till his son is born. Ned's advise is to do nothing as the Dothraki army still cant cross the Narrow Sea. Petyr is aware of this meeting and tells Varys not to play double games with Ned. Yorin reaches Ned from the wall and informs him that Catelyn has imprisoned Tyrion and the Lannisters are going to reach King's Landing the next day.
Robert calls a council meeting and summons Ned. Roberts wants Daenerys and Viserys dead. Ned refuses to participate in Robert's plan to assassinate the pregnant Daenerys Targaryen and resigns as Robert's Hand, angering him. Cersei counsels Robert that Dothraki can never sail the narrow sea. Robert counters that if Viserys lands with 40,000 Dothraki, all the Kingdoms will hole up in their castles, as it would be foolish to meet the Dothraki in an open field. Then the Dothraki will loot and burn all the towns and villages. This will turn the people against their King and they will be forced to recognize Viserys as their true king. The seven Kingdoms don't even have a proper army. Each Kingdom has their own and wont unite for a fight. Robert admits to Cersei that he still fondly remembers his first queen and Ned's sister (Lyanna).

Lysa is Jon Arryn's wife and is livid that Catelyn bought Tyrion to her Kingdom without permission. Tyrion insists that he is not a murderer and that he had no hand in the attempt on Brandon's life. Only an imbecile would give his own dagger to the assassin. Lysa is livid that Catelyn brought Tyrion to the Eyrie. She is also bat shit loony, and breastfeeds her 7+ yrs son. News of Tyrion's capture reaches King's Landing where Jaime Lannister, the Queen's twin brother, demands answers from Ned.
A vengeful Jaime orders Ned's men killed (including Jory) and fights Ned until Jaime's man stabs Ned in the leg from behind, leaving him wounded.
