Ryan tells us 327 people made it through.We see many of them arrive, very excited to "live the dream."
Randy informs the assembled that this is "make it or break it" time. Everyone is nervous backstage.
They come out in groups of ten, sing individually a cappella and get no feedback. They are then informed that they are in or out.
Red-headed Brett Lowenstern starts us out. He's very nervous. We learn about his sad backstory of bullying. He sings "Let it Be." The rest of the line sings but we don't hear them. Brett and a girl named Symphony and a couple of others are put through.
We see more put through in a montage: Rachel Zevita, Thia Megia, and Casey Abrams.
We visit again with chipper Victoria Huggins. She keeps talking about how she's staying for awhile which means that... yup, she's going home. She's sad. Her mom puts on a brave face in the balcony.
We're re-introduced to James Durbin and Paris Tassin who are here for their kids. She does Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" and he tackles "Oh Darling" by the Beatles. And two Steven faves Stormi Henley and Lauren Alaina who do "Stay" by Sugarland and "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers respectively. James, Paris, and Lauren make it through but for Stormi it's over.
Chris Medina the one with the wife who got in the terrible accident is up next. He makes it through with two other guys we aren't introduced to.
A montage of nervous people. Steven gives a quick pep talk.
We get another trio mash-up this time of youngsters Jacee Badeaux, Robbie Rosen, and Holly Cavanaugh all of who get put through.
Up next Steve Beghun the CPA who was a surprise with his high,sweet voice. He gets sent home, sadly.
A montage of goodbyes, some to people who were highlighted in the auditions, some of them are very, very sad.
Day 2
The remaining 163 give it a shot.
We get a montage of flubs and clunkers and people being sent packing.
Next up is the ex-couple Chelsee Oaks and Rob Bolin who are each rooming with one half of the happy loving couple from Arizona Jacqueline Dunford and Nick Fink. They've all become friends which has been hard for Rob. Chelsee and Rob both make it through. But only Jacqueline makes it in her couple. They are understandably upset. Nick actually begs for another chance and sings his way up the aisle.
The charming young man from North Carolina Scotty McCreery with the deep voice. He charms JLo especially. He gets put through as do other "early favorites " with a repeat of their audition song Jackie Wilson and Jerome Bell.
Up next is the girl who had the stars on her boobs Tiffany Rios who says she's tired of seeing other people doing what she knows she can do. This does not make her popular with the other contestants. And also Travis Orlando, the young man who had lived in a shelter at one point. Tiffany goes through but Travis gets sent home.
The final line gets put through in its entirety including Clint Jun Gamboa, the Gutierrez Brothers, Naima Adedapo, Julie Zarilla, Molly Dewolfe, Emily Anne Reed, Stefano Langone, and Ashley Sullivan[b/].
168 total made it through to the group round.
