The remaining 100 sit in a holding room "emotionally exhausted" and "physically drained" according to Ryan. we see the judges go over the pictures on the table.
Folks rehearse for the final solo audition. They can go a cappella or use the band. This time they won't find out until later their fate.
Up first is Haley Reinhart who sings "God Bless the Child" with the band. It's very bluesy and growly and a little shouty but the judges love it. JLo calls it redemption.
Next is Ashton Jones who sings "And I'm Telling You." The judges compliment her.
Back is Thia Megia is back and she works "What a Wonderful World" to the judges pleasure. And she really is very poised.
We get a montage of people who were less successful working with the band, remembering the words, singing in the right key.
Not a problem for Clint Jun Gamboa who wails is way through "Georgia on My Mind" in an incredibly overwrought manner that the judges clearly enjoy.
Kendra Chantelle and Sophia Shorai also do "Georgia on My Mind" in ways that seems to make the judges happy.
Chris Medina decided to do Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" thinking it would be very unlikely to be done by others except the goofy surfer boy Carson Higgins decided to do it too. They're using different arrangements. Carson goes classic. Chris goes acoustic. They intercut them but mostly show Carson, because he is much more entertaining and he sounds good.
Now the "we play instruments" gang gets a shot.
Julie Zorilla sings Sara Bareilles' "Love Song" with piano. Caleb Hawley does Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" with acoustic guitar.Colton Dixon does Daughtry's "What About Now" with piano. Brett Lowenstern sings with an acoustic guitar.Robbie Rosen does Bareilles' "Gravity" with piano. They're varying degrees of good, from competent to great. I bet they all go through.
Casey Abrams hoped to shine with his stand up bass. He does a fun, slow, version of "Georgia on My Mind" and the band kicks in. The judges find it funny and pleasing.
Jacqueline Dunford bowed out of the competition after getting very ill. Her friend and roommate Chelsee Oaks is shaken but manages to make through Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" with a few bumps. She's upset with her performance.
Lauren Alaina does "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith which she sang with Steven during her audition. Steven is clearly smitten as are the other judges.JLo muses on her being 15.
Jacob Lusk does a jazzy, gospel and way oversung take on "God Bless the Child" that also clearly pleases the panel who give him a hooting, standing ovation. He breaks down outside the audition, clearly exhausted.
John Wayne Schulz follows that with a very understated take on "Landslide" playing his guitar, that's quite lovely. It moves JLo to sing along.
Melodramatic Ashley Sullivan is freaking out again. She starts out nicely and messes up the words and psychs herself out. She starts melting down. Randy tells her to go to the chorus. She does, but messes up again. The judges seem to give her a pass. She walks off tearfully. She apologizes to her boyfriend who tries to console her.
We get three guys combined Stefano Langone who does a nice "Sir Duke." Jovany Barreto who does an a cappella take on "She Sang to Me" by JLo's husband Marc Anthony. And finally Jacee Badeaux who does David Cook's "Time of My Life." The judges like them all.
The final two are Scotty McCreery and Tatynisa Wilson both doing a song they are unfamiliar with "I Hope You Dance" by Leann Womack. Both sing okay, he a little better than her, but both struggle mightily with the lyrics. Scotty says if he was a judge he'd cut himself. Tatynisa calls someone and explains she messed everything up.
We watch the judges go over the photos again.
The aspirants are split up into the three rooms of doom and salvation. The judges go through the annual fake out routine with the rooms going through.
Room 1 including Ashley, Brett, Jacee, Lauren, Robbie and others get the word that they are, of course, going through.
Of course Room 2, including Corey and Brielle whose final auditions we didn't see so you know what that means, now worry that they are on the chopping block when they hear the cheering. And they were right. Steven lowers the boom. Randy tells them to pick themselves up and keep going.
Room 3 includes Mark Gutierrez and Chelsee Oaks and the news is equally bad for them. JLo says each one of them is very special.
Heretofore unseen Room 4, including Carson, Julie, Jovany, and Scotty get good news. The ones who made it through run into the hallway and hug each other.
The judges announce a new challenge: the remaining competitors will take on the Beatles, with only 24 hours to learn their songs, and perform them on the Beatles "LOVE" Cirque du Soleil stage.
