The first confirmed settlement on Iceland were Irish Monks around 800 A.D. They were displaced by Norse settlers with Celtic slaves or wives. The island was loosely controlled by local authorities until Olaf Tryggvason unified the Danish realm under Christianity and claimed Iceland in 999 A.D.
