Although fictitious, the film is heavily inspired by real events and even draws inspiration for its scenes from well known and documented accounts from the real life battle.
Mitchell Weidemann (the writer of Delville Wood) stated that he spent nearly his entire time in film school writing the concept before finally filming it in his final year.
Delville Wood was the very first war film ever produced by AFDA Johannesburg.
The majority of the film is told from the point of view of Modise John Mofokeng, except for the final scene which is shown from the point of view of Emily Hussaef.
The production was initially set to be made under incredibly harsh restrictions due to the Covid 19 pandemic, however, restrictions were eased moments before the shooting began allowing for the film to be completed.
