- Robert has been injured while hunting and is dying. Jon and the others finally take their vows to the Night's Watch. A man, sent by Robert, is captured for trying to poison Daenerys. Furious, Drogo vows to attack the Seven Kingdoms.
- Ned confronts Cersei about her children but she dismisses his allegations. The head of the Lannister clan tells his son Jaime to be a leader and sends him to rescue Tyrion. Ros, the prostitute from Winterfell begins working for Littlefinger in King's Landing. At the wall, a riderless horse belonging to Jon Snow's uncle Benjen returns to the wall. Jon takes his vows as a Night's Watchman but is disappointed to not having been named a Ranger but Sam sees it differently. King Robert is injured while out boar hunting with his brother. He knows he will not survive and names Ned Lord Regent until Joffrey comes of age. Knowing that Joffrey is not Robert's son, he feels Robert's brother should succeed him but Littlefinger counsel's otherwise. - While hunting, King Robert is lethally wounded by a boar and designates Ned as Lord Regent until Joffre comes of age. Ned knows that Joffre is not son of Robert and believes that Robert's brother Stannis should be his successor. Meanwhile Jon Snow is assigned as steward of Alliser Thorne and not a ranger, and he is near to quit the Night's Watch; however Sam convinces him that he will be probably trained to be the next commander and Jon takes his vows. A wine merchant tries to poison Daenerys but Jorah saves her life. In gratitude, Drogo gives a horse to Jorah and promises the Iron Throne to his wife. - In King's Landing, Ned confronts Cersei, saying he knows Jaime fathered her children and will inform King Robert. Before he can, Robert is critically wounded while hunting boar. As Robert lies dying, he signs a proclamation naming Ned "Protector of the Realm," until Robert's heir can assume the throne. Ned amends the wording to say the king's rightful heir. Ned sends word to Stannis, Robert's brother, the legal heir to the throne. Ned asks Petyr Baelish to secure the City Watch's loyalty. After Robert's death, Ned confronts Cersei and Joffrey in the throne room, where Baelish and the City Watch betray Ned and attack his men. At the Wall, Benjen Stark disappears during a foray north of the Wall. Jon and Sam are assigned as stewards, with Jon as Lord Commander Jeor Mormont's personal servant. Jon is disappointed he was not chosen as a ranger until Sam points out that Commander Mormont likely intends to groom him for command. The stewards swear their loyalties to the Night's Watch. In Essos, King Robert's hired assassin is exposed by Ser Jorah before he can poison Daenerys. Drogo vows to conquer the Seven Kingdoms for his unborn son and starts marching towards Westeros.
- Explaining that the future of the Lannisters is at stake, Tywin presses Jaime to "be the man you were meant to be" as they prepare for battle. Ned confronts Cersei about the secrets that killed Jon Arryn. With the fate of the missing Benjen very much on his mind, Jon Snow takes his Night's Watch vows, though not with the assignment he coveted. After Ser Jorah saves Daenerys from treachery, an enraged Drogo vows to lead the Dothraki where they've never gone before. - Jaime was hiding with Tywin. Tywin berates Jaime for leaving Ned alive, but Jaime says he was worried about his honor if he killed an unarmed man. Tywin gives Jaime 30,000 men to capture the house of Stark, and Free Tyrion. Tywin is focused on creating a dynasty that would last a 1000 yrs. He does not want to collapse the way the Targaryens did. In King's Landing, Ned tells Cersei he knows all of her children are Jaime's. He also deduces correct that Brandon saw both of them having sex and that's why Jaime threw him off the tower. Cersei doesn't deny anything and admits that she hates RObert and loves Jaime. Ned tells Cersei to leave with her kids before RObert returns from his hunt. Ned intends to tell RObert the truth about Cersei and Jaime.
They soon learn that Robert has been critically wounded by a boar while hunting. A dying Robert names Ned as the "Protector of the Realm" to rule until Joffrey reaches the legal age. But Ned purposefully changes the name from Joffrey to "the rightful heir" on the parchment before Robert signs it and dies. Ned also reverses Robert's order of attacking Daenerys (based on Robert's command to stop the attack) and instructs Varys to pull back any assassins assigned to the task.
Ros joins Petyr's brothel in King's Landing. Petyr trains Ros to become a class act in seducing men. Jorah receives a pardon and can go back home now to the mainland. Daenerys has a desire to capture the Iron Throne as after Viserys, she is the rightful owner of the Seven Kingdoms. In Essos, Robert's assassin is captured before he can poison Daenerys, with Jorah help (The spy tries to sell Daenerys a cask of poisoned wine, but Jorah stops him and makes him taste first, thereby exposing him). Drogo vows to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and give that realm to his son. He starts marching towards Westeros.
One of the wild-ling female (Osha) captured by Theon and Robb tells the Maester of Winterfell that the White Walkers have awaken and are returning to attack the known world. They were never gone, they were only sleeping.
Renly advises Ned to strike at Cersei while he has the advantage. Renly says that Ned should take Joffrey into his custody. He who the KIng, holds the Kingdom. Renly is against putting Stannis on the throne. Ned sends a message to Stannis, Robert's brother, intending to enthrone him since Robert has no true legal heirs. Renly cautions Ned against inviting Stannis to the throne, whom he does not think is a competent ruler. Ned says that Stannis led men into battle twice and destroyed the Greyjoy fleet. Ned refuses to attack Cersei. Ned tells Petyr Baelish about his plan and asks him to gain the loyalty of the City Watch (made of 2000 soldiers), the only force capable of overpowering Lannister forces loyal to Cersei. Petyr warns Ned that installing Stannis would lead to war with the Lannisters. He advises Ned to make peace with the Lannisters. Wed Sansa to Joffrey and install Joffrey on the throne. When Joffrey becomes a problem, Ned can always reveal his little secret and install Renly on the throne. Ned refuses.
At the Wall, Ned's younger brother Benjen goes missing during a foray to the north, beyond the Wall. Jon and Sam are picked as stewards (which is an insult to them as the real job is for the rangers), with Jon assigned to Lord Commander Mormont. The stewards swear their loyalties to the Night's Watch. This was done by Alliser Thorne to teach a lesson to both Sam and Jon. Other stewards include Pyp (Josef Altin). Jon wants to quit and leave. Sam explains to Jon that this is great opportunity as Jon will be very close to the Lord Commander. He will know and be part of everything.
After Robert's death, Ned, Baelish and the City Watch confront Cersei and Joffrey in the throne room. Joffrey is on the throne and commands Ned to make arrangements for his coronation within the fortnight. Cersei tears apart Robert's last will. She offers Ned to swear loyalty to Joffrey and in return, spend his remaining days at Winterfell. Baelish and the City Watch betray Ned and attack his men.
