The Newport Beach Film Festival, running April 28–May 5, celebrates its 12th year in 2011. While its presentation of films relating to art, architecture and design has become one of the best-curated collections in the country, the festival is more than notable for its action-sports programming, its high-school filmmaker showcase and its ability to bring together around 300 films from around the globe, many of which represent the ultimate cinematic offerings of the past 12 months.
Nbff offers filmmakers an important asset — an audience. That the audience is geographically proximate to the greater Los Angeles area is a bonus, and it is only a matter of time before L.A. industry types wake up and take the hour-plus drive to Orange County to discover next-generation talent (rather than traverse the nation to Tribeca, whose seemingly constant shape-shifting has cost that festival its heart).
