Just in case you didn't know, this interview is named after an apparently popular scene in Bloody Birthday in which Lori Lethin's character races around a birthday party knocking what she believes is poisoned cake out of peoples hands and screaming her line: "Don't eat that cake!" Hey wow, it's Lori Lethin today! Cool! I really liked her as Joyce Russel in the movie, her sweet and wholesome personality made her quite endearing and she was a great survivor gal. She's a bit hard to recognise now, as she is now blonde and quite a quirky middle-aged woman! She speaks of her experiences acting in the film fondly, saying that there was no child safety whatsoever. She says that she grew close to K.C.Martel, becoming something of a real big sister to him and looking after him on the set. She reveals that all the young boys had a big crush on Elizabeth Hoy. She also reveals that about a year prior to this interview, she happened to bump into Hoy in a restaurant, and that she's now in a completely different business and looks just the same, only older. She doesn't seem to think very highly of the film itself, referring to it in a roundabout way as "kitchy" and suggesting that the only reason it's been remembered for thirty years is because it is so bad! I don't agree with that. It is admittedly a bit corny now, and not a masterpiece by any stretch, but I still really enjoy it. To me the actions of the children in the movie are, in this day and age where kids really do kill people and each other, rendered darkly ironic and it has an eerie kind of resonance that gets under the skin. For some strange reason, behind her for the duration of the interview is a ventriloquist dummy that looks just like the one the "NO SMOKING!" girl had in Twilight Zone the Movie! She seems nice enough, if perhaps a bit over-composed and stiff, and a few of her comments verge on being barbed and tacky. It's not at all that she comes off as arrogant or anything, it's just that I've seen other interviews with actresses from old horror movies who were a lot more open. You can find a number of similar interviews on the excellent special edition of The House on Sorority Row. She goes on to say that she retired from acting to support her kids, and went back to school to study to become a marriage and addiction recovery councillor or something. This is a fairly good interview, although nothing to scream about. As a great fan of Bloody Birthday, it was very interesting to see how one of its stars was doing and hear a little backstage dirt. Her final statement is that every once in a while one of her clients will ask her something. I'll just let you guess what it is...
