Grief is a terrible animal, red of claw and tooth, and once it gets hold of you, there is no way of knowing what it will do to you. Over the last year, I've watched a dear friend of mine struggle with back to back losses of two of the most important people in her life, and at times, I've genuinely worried that it would be too much for her to take. This is a strong, vibrant person, and grief landed on her in a way that very nearly crushed all of that joy and vitality right out of her. I've had my own bouts with profound sorrow over the last year as a result of the end of my marriage, and while I feel like I've reached the other side of all of that, I remain shaken by just how damaged I was by things. For the first time in my adult life,...

Woody Allen is returning to Cannes next month with his 46th directorial effort, "Irrational Man." It's Allen's second collaboration with his latest lady muse, Emma Stone, and his first with the always mercurial, but talented Joaquin Phoenix. Based on the trailer released today, "Irrational" appears to center on a "radical" philosophy professor, Abe Lucas (Phoenix), and the relationships he develops with a younger student (Emma Stone) and another professor (Parker Posey). Oh, and he might be going through some sort of mid-life crisis. It's all pretty much expected from Allen at this stage of his career, except for one tiny element, a substantial role for the one and only Ms. Posey. The darling of the independent film world for a good portion of the '90s, Posey hasn't had a substantial film role since her Independent Spirit Award nominated performance in 2007's "Broken English." Instead, she's found critical acclaim for...

Maid of Honor: Walker’s Thriller Uneasily Navigates Issues of Class
Serving as a portrayal of unsaid attitudes amongst the elitist denizens of the Hamptons that seems to ring true even when drowning in its over-the-top pronouncements, Michael Walker’s third feature, The Maid’s Room is a mixed bag of interesting ideas lost in a sea of underdevelopment. It’s never quite smart enough to be thrilling and hopelessly overwrought when its fragile examination of class issues necessitates more subtlety for success, but its fine for a late night cheapie that’s pretending to convey morality through martyrdom.
Recently emigrating from Bogota to the Hamptons, soft spoken transplant Drina (Paula Garces) accepts a position as a housemaid for the prosperous Crawford’s (Bill Camp and Annabelle Sciorra). The estate is more of a vacation or summer home for the wealthy couple, so they leave for distant climes while...

Some of the best psychological thrillers of modern times have come from obscure directors working with unknown casts on tiny budgets. Take Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and Alex R. Johnson’s Two Step as some recent examples. Next month will see the release of The Maid’s Room, from Price Check director Michael Walker. Whether it will be added to that list of unexpected gems remains to be seen, but the tense clip that We Got This Covered is exclusively debuting for you today is a very promising indicator.
In the clip, live-in maid Drina (Paula Garcés) discovers a newspaper clipping related to a recent hit-and-run, then overhears a conversation between her affluent employer Mr. Crawford (Bill Camp) and his teenage son Brandon (Philip Ettinger). The bits and pieces of what she hears sparks her realization that Brandon is responsible for the accident. It’s a brief,...

Paladin will release the Hitchcockian thriller "The Maid's Room" in theaters and on digital platforms in the spring, company president Mark Urman announced today. The film, which was written and directed by Michael Walker ("Chasing Sleep," "Price Check"), had its world premiere last fall at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Set and filmed on Long Island, "The Maid's Room" follows Drina (Paula Garces), an immigrant who takes a job for the season as live-in maid to the Crawfords, a privileged New York family who maintain a splendid home in the Hamptons. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford spend most of their time in the city, but their teenage son, Brandon, spends the summer on the beach, and Drina must look after him and his spoiled friends. The maid’s room is next to the garage, and Drina overhears Brandon when he returns late one night, noisily and obviously drunk. The next day,...

Commercial Failure: Bernbaum’s Debut Doa
What sounds good on paper doesn’t always translate well on screen, and Zack Bernbaum’s directorial debut, And Now a Word from Our Sponsor, exemplifies the delirious dangers of gimmicky filmmaking. A cutesy idea that doesn’t seem far removed from something that could have easily been a wooden studio feature top lining Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler, sinks like a lead balloon within its establishing frames. Instead of making any attempt to redirect from the predictable trajectory outlined by its feeble premise, Bernbaum, together with Michael Hamilton-Wright’s naggingly insistent screenplay, instead plunge head long into its flat concept, a stubborn perseverance that makes its slight running time a grueling test of patience.

Whereas Walker’s first foray was in the psychological art house, this latest feature is a comedic character study that has one delectable asset that is both the sole reason to see the film, and also, sadly, what viciously outshines every other aspect of the film; and that’s a wickedly perfect role for Parker Posey.

Not having a large amount of money, and continuously learning how to cope with limited resources is a universal theme in the new comedy-drama ‘Price Check,’ which is now playing in select theaters. Not only does the movie’s main character, Pete Cozy, have to contend with not being able to provide for his family as much as he’d like, but the film’s writer-director, Michael Walker, also had to cope with a limited budget while shooting. But Walker took whatever measures necessary to ensure his film would get made, and infused that determination into Pete. ‘Price Check‘ follows Pete (played by Eric Mabius), who has found himself a house in the [ Read More ]

This week saw the countdown to the end of the Twilight movies, though we didn’t pay it much attention. Kevin gave us a drinking game to play while watching the whole series in marathon form, but that’s it. Maybe we were all too busy still appreciating the greatness of the latest James Bond — a series that fortunately didn’t conclude after only five installments — or skipping through to wonder about the future, as in whether The Mortal Instruments is the new Twi-like sensation. We did, of course, review the final Twilight Saga film, and we remind and invite you to check out that and other reviews of new releases (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2; Lincoln; Anna Karenina; Price Check) as well as an interview with Anna Karenina director Joe Wright. With another week coming to a close, it's time to take a look at just how much critics were unimpressed with the newest entertainment offerings.
In music, Christina Aguilera made a more-than-solid return with her seventh studio album, "Lotus." Still, for most critics, the fleeting examples of her vocal superiority were diluted by over produced tracks that obscured the character of her voice. Elsewhere, Lana Del Rey's "Paradise" was scolded for its weak writing, while Green Day's "Dos!" received negative marks for its lack of energy. The boys of One Direction didn't please with "Take Me Home," either, an album critics described as mostly full of predictable pop filler.
Keira Knigthley's array of gorgeous outfits weren't enough to draw critics into "Anna Karenina," a film that some felt was full of emotionless characters that lacked the depth found in the original novel. Daniel Day-Lewis received rave reviews for his performance in "Lincoln,...

For the last two decades, Parker Posey has been bringing audiences to their knees so quickly, you'd think Darla just shouted, "Air Raid!" Seamlessly segueing between indie cinema and popcorn fare (not to mention jumping from film to television and back again), the actress has established herself as one of the most versatile, gifted and beguiling in the biz.

The end is finally here... the end of The Twilight Saga, that is. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 hits theatres this weekend, and based on the image above, appears to involve the shady world of vampire arm wrestling. Sounds like a solid finale. Editor’s note: Sundance premiere Price Check hits limited release tomorrow. Here’s a re-run of our Sundance review of the film, originally published on January 26, 2012. Michael Walker‘s feature directorial debut, Price Check, starts off innocently enough, sort of a twist on Office Space if Lumbergh was actually a nice guy who wanted his unmotivated employees to succeed. Eric Mabius stars as Pete, who lost his dream job in music and is now forced to work in a regional pricing and marketing division for a failing division of a multi-brand grocery store company. Like most people these days, Pete is concerned about finances – he’s the only breadwinner in the house, and he and his wife have credit card bills to pay and a three-year-old to raise and probably a new car to get – and the recent departure of his beloved boss isn’t helping matters much. Who is going to replace him? And...

While gearing up for the release of the Parker Posey starring indie comedy "Price Check" this week, filmmaker Michael Walker also celebrates the forming of a new production company with producer collaborator Dolly Hall. The new banner, dubbed Fog Cutter Films, has begun casting and will start shooting its first film "The Revolution of Jenny Speck," a psychological thriller about the numbing effects of pop culture. Hall has over 20 producing credits to her name, with titles including Lisa Cholodenko's "High Art," Gary Winnick's "Tadpole," and Griffin Dunne's "Lisa Piscard is Famous," and Walker is the writer and director of the Jeff Daniels starrer "Chasing Sheep," "Price Check," and the forthcoming "The Maid's Room." You can usually count on Parker Posey. Her untiring comedy and witty improv helped her gain notoriety in the 90s, starring (at a young age) alongside older generation comedic vets in Christopher Guest films. This Party Girl was hailed as the original queen of independent cinema. She's one of the rarities in Hollywood who could have easily shot to superstardom with her credentials, but chose instead to take chances on independent films. That said, it's a real shame to watch her talents dry up in the easily forgettable Price Check. Eric Mabius (the guy you only remember from Resident Evil) stars as Peter Cozy, an underpaid, overworked pushover employee at a down-on-its-luck grocery store chain. His old boss recently quit, and Peter was passed up...

Price Check, a new film by writer-director Michael Walker, is being billed as a comedy about the “high price of a middle-class life.” It stars Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) as Pete Cozy, a husband and father who works a 9-to-5 gig in the pricing department of a midsize supermarket chain. It’s not the most glamorous of jobs, but it’s almost enough to support his wife, Sara (Annie Parisse), and their young son. Though the bills are piling up, Pete and Sara make due with what they have. (And don’t pick up the phone when the creditors call.)...

The frown of Parker Posey is like a map of comic chaos. The chief weapon amongst her considerable comic skills (the sarcastic smile is a close second), it does more than inform Posey’s characters, all of whom seem to be suffering some sort of cultural malaise. It’s so all-encompassing, as if her mouth breaks off to form an entirely separate face, that it serves as a promise of sorts: things are bad and are going to get worse, and no one’s going to feel it just as harshly as she will. In another era, Posey would have been our greatest silent film star. It’s merely the ersatz casting agents of today’s Hollywood that have limited her to bitter scolds in a host of studio projects and lead parts in indie pictures no one ever sees. Through no fault of it’s own, here’s another...

Plot: A bored but content office drone for a supermarket chain finds his life shaken up with the arrival of a new boss, a high-strung, filter-free L.A. transplant. When she insists upon his participation in a new marketing plan to save their dwindling business, the family man is surprised to find himself enjoying the ride. Review: Parker Posey fans will not want to skip out on Price Check, which in a lot of ways features the quintessential performance by the indie darling in a role that...

The first trailer for Price Check takes us behind the scandalous world of grocery pricing. Wait, what? Parker Posey stars as an overbearing supervisor whose job is to oversee the pricing department of a supermarket chain. When a new employee and slightly unhappy married man played by Eric Mabius joins Posey's staff, she begins to step over all sorts of ethical boundaries. The film arrives on VOD/iTunes October 11 and is in theaters November 16. Funded entirely through donations via Kickstarter, the filmmakers behind Blood Brother have released a second trailer for this emotionally stirring documentary. The film documents a young American who grew tired of his dead-end graphics design job and on a whim, traveled to India. His trip eventually leads him...

Parker Posey has been the queen of the indies for over two decades, so when a new trailer comes out showcasing one of her indelible performances, it's less of a surprise than it is a affirmation that all is right in the world of cinema.
And the new trailer for "Price Check" does just that, as Posey once again steals the show with a all-out performance that you can't take your eyes off of.
The calendar may change, but Posey remains the same.
So what is Posey up to this time around? Well, in the new trailer for "Price Check," she plays the manager of a grocery store chain who takes one of her new hires (Eric Mabius) under her wing — and into her bed. Which would be complicated enough if he wasn't, you know, happily married with children.
Will Posey's overbearing boss tear apart his family and her own business in the process?...

Parker Posey portrays the type of new boss that most employees want to avoid like the plague… unless of course one of those employees happens to be sleeping with the new boss, which is exactly what happens in Price Check.
Director Michael Walker’s Price Check screened earlier this year during the 2012 Sundance Premieres line-up, and the trailer has finally appeared online to give moviegoers a look into the life of price checker Pete Cozy (Eric Mabius) as his life spins out of control after Susan Felders (Parker Posey) becomes his new boss.
Mabius seems a little lost in this peek of the movie but that could just be credited to his acting skills because being lost actually works for the character that gets caught up in the out-of-control events that take over his life. Pete Cozy seems to just be gliding through life, happy (or at least content) to...

Parker Posey, ever the quirky misfit, looks to revisit familiar territory in the trailer for IFC's emotional new comedy "Price Check." Posey, who recently played a badly unhinged bookstore clerk on a string of "Louie" episodes, appears here as Susan Felders, a manic but somehow charming supermarket executive who bursts into the life of middle manager Pete Cozy (Eric Mabius) with decidedly mixed results. Just over two minutes long, the trailer nicely sketches the film's arc, taking us from Posey's energetic entrance into Pete's workplace as the alluring new boss, to the escalation of their relationship beyond the merely professional. Things begin to unravel from there, as Pete's home life suffers and the stresses of career and romance bring out Susan's latent emotional imbalances. Like other indie comedies of recent years -- "Greenberg," "Win Win" -- "Price Check" seems to portray a kind of...

Among the many delights within Louis C.K.'s Emmy-winning comedy, “Louie,” the most surprisingly delightful has been Parker Posey's two-episode arc as a deceptively perfect romantic partner. Somewhat scarce on the film/TV scene in the past few years, Posey has nonetheless re-emerged recently in a smattering of interesting projects, including the Grace Kelly biopic “Grace of Monaco,” and now a glimpse of her latest independent comedy, “Price Check” appears a solid continuation of the actress' recent comic streak. Starring Eric Mabius, Cheyenne Jackson, Annie Parisse and Josh Pais alongside Posey, the Michael Walker-directed film was picked up by IFC Films following its Sundance premiere earlier this year. Posey plays the over-exuberant boss to Mabius' debt-ridden underling at a supermarket pricing department, and after she expresses interest in raising him up to the executive level, both their professional and home lives...

Parker Posey, the rather elusive actress who first hit most people's radar with Richard Linklater's Dazed And Confused, has bounced around Hollywood, sticking close to her indie roots, while toying with bigger ventures (Blade: Trinity for one). From Party Girl to The House Of Yes, Posey has seemed to find a niche, which revolves around the quirky female lead and it's worked for her. And, it looks like she's following suit with Price Check, another off-beat character role...

The trailer for Michael Walker’s (Chasing Sleep) latest comedy, Price Check, starts off looking like it’s going to be an ironic-in-tone workplace comedy along the lines of things like Office Space or The Office, but then, halfway through, there’s a shocker of a line that puts a whole new spin on the story and probably shouldn’t be given away. So we’re not going to talk much about what this movie is about here in this trailer write-up. What we should talk about though are the performances on display, and, more specifically, how fun Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) and Parker Posey (Waiting for Guffman) look like they’re going to be in this. Price Check debuted this year at Sundance, where our own Kate Erbland saw it and called it “laughably uneven,” but also made clear that it “features a solid comedic performance from star Posey.” If...

Parker Posey is a bit of an indie darling, and she has great comedic sensibilities, even in films that don't match her caliber of talent. Sadly at Sundance, Price Check was one of those films. While it brings some laughs, it also comes with an inconsistent tone and a very clumsy third act. The film follows Pete Cozy (Eric Mabius) who is having trouble resolving a happy marriage and family life with rising debt and a job he hates. When his new boss, Susan (Posey), a human dynamo, shows up, Pete is pulled into the maelstrom that is her life and made to work harder than he ever has before. Decide for yourself if it's worth watching. After a lengthy hiatus from filmmaking, writer-director Michael Walker, who made his debut with the Jeff Daniels thriller Chasing Sleep in 2000, has returned with the biting office comedy Price Check. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, stars Ugly Betty's Eric Mabius as an average family man named Pete Cozy, who once held dreams of working in the music industry, but now focuses on making the best out of his mid-level job at the offices of a Long Island supermarket chain, carefully carving out time for his wife (Annie Parisse) and son (Finn Donoghue). But Pete's track to suburban bliss is derailed once he meets his new boss Susan Felders, a foul-mouthed sparkplug played by indie mega star Parker Posey. With an easy bravura, Susan gives Pete a major promotion, throwing his delicate balance of work and home all out of whack. But that's...
