Todd Haynes creates movies that feel like part of his DNA. Whether they're originals (Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, I'm Not There) or adapted from other works (Carol, the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce), they seem to course from his bloodstream into ours. Wonderstruck, gorgeous as it is, feels like something a little less personal, a little less transgressive. Haynes has said he wanted to make a smart film for kids, and as source material, he chose a juvenile-fiction novel illustrated and written by Brian Selznick, whose work also inspired Martin Scorsese's Hugo.

The true story of a tone-deaf wealthy music lover who wants to be an opera star is painfully poignant
A César award-winning performance by Catherine Frot as the tone-deaf Marguerite Dumont drives a tragicomic tale of a wealthy but lonely music lover who proves that “singers can’t hear themselves”. Inspired by the real-life figure of Florence Foster Jenkins (also the subject of Stephen Frears’s forthcoming film starring Meryl Streep), this engagingly compassionate fable from writer-director Xavier Giannoli (The Singer, Superstar) opens at a private party in September 1920, where wannabe opera star Marguerite scares children under tables with a voice that is “divinely off-key – sublimely, wildly!” Cold-shouldered by a husband who sees her as “a freak”, Marguerite is embraced by opportunists and anarchists who hear in her voice the sound of someone trying to “exorcise an inner demon” – a review she takes as a compliment. An elaborate conspiracy to...

Sing the Body Apoplectic: Giannoli Pays Thanks to the Music
French director Xavier Giannoli borrows an obscure piece of American pop culture for his latest feature, Marguerite, a 1920s Parisian high society dramedy based loosely on the life and career of New England socialite Florence Foster Jenkins. Oblivious to her glaring lack of talent, the wealthy soprano was the source of rampant ridicule, her folly reaching an unmitigated apotheosis following a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance in an instance of truth being stranger than fiction. Resting beautifully on the masterful shoulders of Catherine Frot, an oft-Cesar nominated actress who hasn’t had the deserving international acclaim she’s due, the film’s success hinges delicately on her performance, even with a cadre of supporting players otherwise subjugated to empathetic cliché or predictably reprehensible conduct.
Marguerite Dumont (Frot) has staged a benefit concert at her home, a sprawling chateau outside of Paris.

★★★☆☆ Set in 1920 and loosely inspired by the life of infamous soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, Marguerite (2015) is Xavier Giannoli's follow up to disappointing Superstar, which was in competition at Venice three years ago. Marguerite's main characters are wannabes who ultimately find themselves trapped in their own delusions. Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot) is an untalented opera singer who believes she has a wonderful voice, regularly performing for her aristocratic friends and behaving like a diva for her butler and amateur photographer Madelbos (Denis Mpunga). In this, she is a classic Giannoli character who falls victim to their own false beliefs.
Marguerite's rendition of Mozart's Queen of the Night sees her squawking throughout the whole aria, in one of the most hilarious, albeit ear-shattering, sequences seen in Venice so far and transformed what looked to be stiff period film into something altogether different. Marguerite is undeniably, and irreparably, tone-deaf, but...

HitFix's recent spate of "Best Year in Film History" pieces inevitably spurred some furious debate among our readers, with some making compelling arguments for years not included in our pieces (2007 and 1968 were particularly popular choices) and others openly expressing their bewilderment at the inclusion of others (let's just say 2012 took a beating). In the interest of giving voice to your comments, below we've rounded up a few of the most thoughtful, passionate, surprising and occasionally incendiary responses to our pieces, including my own (I advocated for The Year of Our Lynch 2001, which is obviously the best). Here we go... Superstar commenter "A History of Matt," making an argument for 1968: The Graduate. Bullit. The Odd Couple. The Lion in Winter. Planet of the Apes. The Thomas Crown Affair. Funny Girl. Rosemary's Baby. And of course, 2001, A Space Odyssey. And that's only a taste of the greatness of that year. "Lothar the Flatulant,...

One is small, swift, and sinister, and the other is towering, menacing, and brutal. You wouldn’t want to run into either one. Horror movie antagonists Leprechaun and Jacob Goodnight may use different malicious methods, but both are deadly denizens of upcoming films from WWE Studios and Lionsgate. An Sdcc panel and an autograph session featuring Leprechaun: Origins and See No Evil 2 have been announced, and the panel will include an unveiling of the new looks of Leprechaun and Jacob Goodnight.
On Thursday, July 24th an autograph signing of a convention exclusive two-sided poster by Jen and Sylvia Soska, Glenn “Kane” Jacobs, Danielle Harris, and Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl will take place at Lionsgate’s booth #4045 from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. What could possibly be more stressful than gathering with family for Thanksgiving? How about gathering with old high-school classmates? That's exactly what "Ben and Kate" faces in the show's Thanksgiving episode, "Reunion."
But it's not all parties and big family dinners. Oh no -- there are some major relationship issues that need to be worked out before the holiday can end. Also, there's a turkey named Keith.
Both Ben (Nat Faxon) and Kate (Dakota Johnson) have some complicated things they need to say with regard to their respective relationships. For Ben, this means mentioning to his sister that -- at some point in the past -- he actually married their mutual friend, Bj (Lucy Punch). The 69th edition of the Venice film festival has started with great success, a rich edition full of big surprises, starting from the return of the director Alberto Barbera, who brings new sobriety to a festival that has become larger than life in his late editions.
Barbera, as you can see in the photos, is always smiling and with a smart attitude, proud of his choices and of his juries, and with a president such Michael Mann, who can blame him. This edition presents a little less movies than the previous one but you cannot complain with 18 films in the main competition among which the most awaited “The Master” by Paul Thomas Anderson, “Passion” by Brian de Palma, “Pieta” by Kim Ki Duk, “To the Wonder” by Terrence Malick, the almost blasphemous “Paradies: Glaube” by Ulrich Siedl and the scandalous “Spring Breakers” by Harmony Korine.

The most secretive of the fall festivals has now been unveiled. Kicking off Friday, Telluride 2012 has revealed their line-up, with highlights including Michael Haneke‘s Amour, Ramin Bahrani‘s At Any Price, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Roger Michell‘s Hyde Park on Hudson, Jacques Audiard‘s Rust & Bone, Noah Baumbach‘s Frances Ha and Sarah Polley‘s Stories We Tell.
Unfortunately absent are a few major titles, including Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Olivier Assayas‘ Something in the Air, but rumors point to Ben Affleck‘s Argo secretly getting a bow there, as they will announce a few more as the festival progresses this weekend. Check out the line-up and press release below, which includes more programs, such as showings of Stalker and Baraka.
