Quotes

  • Maney Gault : Clyde might be king, but I'm a Texas Ranger, you little shit.

  • Maney Gault : [Frank and Maney are sitting at a table in a coffee shop in Coffeyville, Kansas on the lookout for Bonnie and Clyde. Gault is eating a slice of cake and Frank's drinking a cup of coffee]

    [chuckles]

Maney Gault : How many bullets you got in you?

Frank Hamer : Hell I don't know... Sixteen I think.

Maney Gault : [between spoonfuls]  You know...

    [clears his throat]

Maney Gault : Man can't PASS bullets through him like he can kidney stones?... might be GOOD to have a doctor look at you sometime.

Frank Hamer : Might be good to have a doctor look at YOU sometime.

Maney Gault : I ain't got no bullets in me.

Frank Hamer : Because I was COVERING you.

[Maney puts another spoonful of cake in his mouth, nods his head in agreement and smiles at Frank]

  • Frank Hamer : How'd she fall in with an outlaw like Barrow?

Deputy Ted Hinton : Bored to tears. Along come Clyde in a fine car, by the time she found out the car was stolen, she was already in love.

Maney Gault : Ain't that romantic. I met my wife she was milking a prize Devon at the Oklahoma State Fair, I can't imagine anybody writing a ballad about that encounter.

  • Maney Gault : Manos arribas.

  • Maney Gault : You came all the way up to the house, what changed your mind?

Frank Hamer : I don't know, maybe seeing you move like you're 85.

Maney Gault : Well, that honest. Maybe a little too honest.

  • Maney Gault : How many bullets you got in you?

Frank Hamer : Sixteen, I think.

Maney Gault : It might be good to have a doctor look at you sometime.

Frank Hamer : It might be good to have a doctor look at you sometime.

Maney Gault : I ain't got no bullets in me.

Frank Hamer : Because I was covering you.

  • Maney Gault : [Maney and Gault are considering Bonnie's poem about her life and anticipated death which was published in a local newspaper]  Used to be, you had to have talent to get published. Now you just have to shoot people.

  • Frank Hamer : I think I'll look up Leadbetter.

    Maney Gault : He's dead.

    Frank Hamer : Or Cuthbert.

Maney Gault : Dead too. So's Alvarez. And if you go any further down the roster I'm gonna be gravely offended.

  • Maney Gault : [after Bonnie and Clyde had once again escaped detection]  Got through a 1000-man dragnet to deliver a bunny to Momma!

  • Maney Gault : [after arriving too late at the gang's hideout]  Probably best they weren't home, we got no jurisdiction to arrest them in these parts.

Frank Hamer : We weren't there to arrest them, Maney.

  • Deputy Bob Alcorn : [Hamer sits outside listening to crickets on the porch]  What's he doing out there?

Maney Gault : He likes to be alone sometimes.

Deputy Ted Hinton : Sheriff Smoot said you and Hamer killed more than 50 men between you.

    [Everyone looks at Maney]

Maney Gault : [Silent a moment]  Killed more than that one evenin'.

Deputy Ted Hinton : I didn't mean to pry.

Maney Gault : It's all right, kid.

[Issues out a new deck of cards]

Maney Gault : Ante up, gents.

    [Maney thinks a minute]

Maney Gault : [Hamer exhales on a cigarette outside]  I was young. Younger than you. South Texas, place called Candelario. Mm. Ranger Company C. Had about 60 bandits pinned down in a dry wash. These fellas burned half a dozen ranches, killed a dozen, raped just about as many.

    [inhales]

    Maney Gault : Anyway.

    [clears throat]

Maney Gault : Every time we'd ride in there to take 'em, we'd yell out, manos arribas.

    [Gestures with his hands]

Maney Gault : You know, hands up. Well, they'd fire on us and we'd lose a man. Went on like that for two days. So, they sent down young Captain Hamer.

    [smiles]

Maney Gault : My friend Pancho. Cap says, what's going on down here? Any time we yell out manos arribas like the law tells us to, they open up on us. Cap says, well, we're going in there afore dawn and, this time, don't no damn body yell out manos arribas.

    [chuckles]

Maney Gault : [takes a sip of coffee]  Just shoot 'em.

    [Sheriff chuckles]

Maney Gault : [Everyone looks at Maney]  Well, that night... them bandits was celebrating. Drunk. Most of them asleep by the fire. We went it. Some of the boys refused to go. Refused to just start shooting men. But I went with Frank. Like I said, he's my friend.

    [smiles sadly]

Maney Gault : He gave me the nod, and we let 'em have it. We shot that arroyo all to hell before most of them fellas even woke up.

[Ted Hinton gives a disturbed look towards Maney]

Maney Gault : [Maney inhales]  I was... jittery. A mule came out from behind a cactus, and I, uh... shot the man riding it half a dozen times. Turned out to be a... 13 year old boy just... trying to run away. I still see his face.

    [collects himself]

Maney Gault : Whole thing was over in five minutes. Counted 54 dead. Counting was over. Cap sat on a rock, holstered his gun and said, manos arribas you sons of bitches.
