Lurking within pages, displayed on the big and small screens, and at home on the airwaves, the horror genre thrived last year. 2016 was packed with great genre offerings, and although it's difficult to filter through the creepy contents of such a banner year for the genre, I forced myself to choose the moments that stuck with me the most... and still haunt my nightmares.
Green Room: Never did violence feel more real onscreen to me this year than the scenes in Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room. The third feature film from the Blue Ruin and Murder Party director is ripe with palpable frights in its depiction of a vicious battle between a punk band and neo-Nazis led by Patrick Stewart’s calculating Darcy. You can practically feel your sweaty palms wrapping around a broken fluorescent tube as the Ain’t Rights prepare for their most important performance yet as...

Back in 2013, I wrote a Last Horror Blog entry chronicling some great novels that Hollywood should consider bringing to the screen. Of course, with centuries of material to choose from, that list was only going to scratch the surface of all the titles worthy of making the transition from the page to the multiplex. So, I’m back with another batch of books that would make fantastic fright flicks. Hollywood will probably never get around to doing these books justice, but at the very least you’ll come away from this column with a bunch of great stories to read. Terminal by Brian Keene Author Brian Keene made my previous list with his zombie novel The Rising, but truth be told, almost everything Keene writes could be turned into a film (and one of his books, Ghoul...

Jug Face was just released to theaters and we were given the opportunity to have actress Lauren Ashley Carter take part in our latest Q&A feature to talk about her role in the movie. Aside from discussing her favorite on-set memory and other Jug Face details, she also talks about her love of horror movies and what’s next:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell us how you became involved with Jug Face? Was it something you heard about and auditioned for or did they reach out to you specifically for this part?
Lauren Ashley Carter: Thanks for having me! Andrew Van Den Houten and I have worked together previously on two films, Rising Stars and The Woman. He asked me to read the script and tell him what I thought. I called him after I finished and told him I really liked it.

Dead Souls is definitely the perfect example of a movie in which each member of the audience takes away from it what they personally want based upon their individual worldview. I found it to be a warning against mixing the occult and Christianity together or using dark arts to gain your own desires. However, Writer Michael Laimo looks at it as a cautionary tale for those who embrace religious beliefs at face value without questioning them.
My interview with Laimo reminds me of one of my first writing jobs. I interviewed musicians about their new albums for a Christian rock magazine. Every issue featured an interview with a mainstream rock star about his personal religious beliefs. I don't share Laimo's views on Christianity, but respect where he's coming from and celebrate the fact that he even gives thought to spiritual and supernatural matters.

A ravenous ghoul terrorizes a cast member of “Modern Family”. A Twilight wolfman and his real-life sister go hunting for supernatural evil. Younger horror fans get to start the new year off with Ghoul and Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft on DVD.
Who would have ever thought Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters would inspire so many b-movie knock-offs? Sure, we’re only talking two, but that’s still two more than I would have expected.
While The Asylum’s Hansel & Gretel name-only mockbuster takes a more modern horror approach, Lionsgate has one that looks to be more of a tweener-friendly version of the R-rated big screen version. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, allow me to introduce you to Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft.
Jonah And Ella Mazer (Hansel and Gretel) were happy, normal teenagers–sent to an elite boarding school. The Headmaster, Sebastian, seems to know more about the brother and sister than they know about themselves.

Most kids are stupid, smelly, trouble-making crumb-snatchers, which is precisely why I don’t have any of my own. When they’re not wiping unsightly nasal discharge onto walls, doors, and Blu-ray discs, they’re unleashing unspeakable evil upon the residents of their hometown. Such is the case with Brian Keene’s “Ghoul”, a motion picture produced by Chiller TV which finds a group of children unearthing a blood-thirsty creature from its cozy home deep beneath the earth’s crust. As you can imagine, it doesn’t take very long for the body count to rise to astronomical proportions. Damn kids and their ill-fated adventuring! If a plot synopsis is what you crave, then you should read this: It is the summer of 1984 when a teenage couple goes missing among the gravestones of the local cemetery. Twelve-year-old Timmy and his best friends, Barry and Doug, have grown up hearing stories...

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that Moderncine's next film will be called Jug Face and will be shooting in Nashville, Tn in April. As a fan of The Woman I'm pretty excited about the package they've put together. Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers (both from The Woman) will be playing the lead roles of Ada and Dawai. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Larry Fessenden (Stake Land, I Sell The Dead) and Sean Young (Blade Runner, Wall Street) playing husband and wife as Ada's parents and Graham Patrick Martin ("Two and a Half Men", Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door) playing Ada's brother, Jessaby. Writer/Director Chad Crawford Kinkle will be helmer and Cinematographer Chris Heinrich will be shooting. Producers are Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino(Brian Keene's Ghoul/The Woman) for MODERNCINÉ. Kinkle's original script for the film won Slamdance's screenplay competition last year.

That has to be one of the best cable channel names and tag lines ever. Chiller is an excellent channel and is home to the replay of some of our favorite series, including The Twilight Zone and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as a lot of terrific scary movies.
Chiller has also been producing some original programming lately and has now announced its first original movie. The movie, entitled Steve Niles’ Remains, has a great cast, including the very excellent Lance Reddick (Fringe, Lost). For their fall original programming lineup, including a new special that features commentary by George E. Romero and Alan Ball, check out their press release:

The feature is part of Chiller's new original productions. The film was produced by MODERNCINÉ's Andrew van den Houten (The Woman, The Girl Next Door) and Robert Tonino.
Based on the novel by Keene, Ghoul centers on a group of young friends who risk their lives to stop who — or what — is behind a handful of disappearances in their town.

Give me a good decapitation anytime. I love arterial spray as much as the next guy. Serial killers, movie monsters, demons and spirits - bring them on. Just keep the creepy kids away. Nothing makes ol' Doctor Gash's skin crawl like a film loaded with spooky little ankle-biting monsters. And the brilliant people over at Chiller are tapping into that fear for their newest special.
To welcome in Halloween this year, Chiller will be airing the newest installment of the "Chiller 13" series. Tune in on October 28 at 8pm to see "Chiller 13: Horror's Creepiest Kids." Tell me, what could be more disturbing?
To help select the top 13, Chiller assembled a group of experts that include two performers who undoubtedly deserve a spot on the list, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) and Miko Hughes (Pet Sematary).
Personally, I think this is a great idea and a cool way to feature some memorable performances.

Production has begun in Mystic, Conn., on Remains, Chiller's second original movie, reports Upi. Starring Grant Bowler, Lance Reddick, Miko Hughes and Tawny Cypress, the film is about survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Based on "30 Days of Night" creator Steve Niles' graphic novel, it began shooting Wednesday. "'Remains' is set in a chilling post-apocalyptic Reno, Nevada, and follows the survivors of a bizarre accident that reduced most of the world's population to zombies," Chiller said in a synopsis. "The group takes refuge in a vacant casino and fights a losing battle against the undead, who grow steadily stronger, smarter and more aggressive by the minute." Remains is the second project for Chiller this year. Production recently wrapped on Brian Keene's Ghoul, starring Nolan Gould.

A couple of weeks ago we told you about "Modern Family" star Nolan Gould joining the Chiller TV adaptation of Brian Keene's Ghoul and now the famed author of the living dead has given fans a first look at the little scamp on-set.
"Here’s me and Nolan Gould on the set of Ghoul," writes Keene on his site. "I’ve said in interviews that Ghoul’s Timmy is one of my most autobiographical characters. Now Nolan is playing him, and knocking it out of the park. It’s very strange to see someone playing a fictionalized version of yourself as a kid, and I’m deeply honored and humbled by Nolan’s portrayal."
Gould is starring along with acting vet Barry Corbin (No Country for Old Men, "The Closer") in Chiller TV’s first original telefilm.
