I can take several issues with this miniseries.
First, given the fact that it is rooted in The Pillars of the Earth, it should offer some background. It practically ignores that entire storyline. The series can stand on its own but it's best, if it's set up with the background story.
Then, the show's casting is AWFUL. The woman who plays Queen Isabella can barely deliver a coherent sentence. She being the absolute worst actor in the lot, the rest leave much to be desired as well. They cast some decent enough actors but their roles are very watered down. Though I must say that it's good to see Miranda Richardson finally play the 'goodey' vs. the 'badies' she generally plays.
Next, the script's arcs are sloppy and do not flow at all. The disconnect between the sequences are awkward and truly tiresome to follow.
All in all you really need to want to watch this mini-series because you've either watched The Pillars of the Earth, or are a Ken Follett fan. Either way, this does not do either justice and it's a negligent effort. I was extremely disappointed and wouldn't recommend this all that much.
