We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

For fifty-nine episodes, Sophie Turner played the role of Sansa Stark on the hit series Game of Thrones. For sixty-two episodes, Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow on that same show. And now Turner and Harington are set to work together again, as Deadline reports that they have both signed on to star in the Gothic horror film The Dreadful! This film is coming our way from writer/director Natasha Kermani, who has previously directed the thriller Shattered, the sci-fi drama Imitation Girl, and the horror film Lucky, as well as multiple short films and a segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/85.
The Dreadful will be set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, which took place from 1455 to 1487. The story follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen, who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns,...

Didier Konings' Witte Wieven is a very short feature film, debuting at the IFFR, but made as part of a series of television horror films, presented by the famous Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven. Koolhoven, who might be most well known to American audiences because of his modern western Brimstone, used his power as The Netherlands' most popular current working director this side of Paul Verhoeven, to launch new genre talent in the Netherlands, this time as a producer. There have been many people working in the margins of Dutch genre cinema for a long time, but Koolhoven Presents represents part of a big wave of interesting genre films and filmmakers. The future of Dutch genre film looks bright indeed, if...

Exclusive: First among Hollywood unions this year, the WGA is going face-to-face with the studios starting Monday in what’s expected to be contentious negotiations for a new overall contract. However, the atypical pole position for the hard-hitting scribes this labor round is a consequence of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ rebuke of the DGA efforts to strike a pact a few months ago.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).
This month also marks the third and final season of Hulu’s widely acclaimed “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which charts the rise of the Wu-Tang clan over time. Season 3 catches up with the Wu-Tang members after their first album, facing divergent paths in the years that follow. As with any group navigating the challenging lure of fame and money, it’s a treacherous road — but an indelible journey. “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” Season 3 premieres February 15 on Hulu.
Here’s everything coming to Hulu in February 2023.

It’s a familiar refrain these days: this year’s Sundance Film Festival will look a fair bit different than years past, but the same depth of filmmaking talent appears to still be on offer. And now, for the first time ever, film fans can stream all of the festival’s slate in the safety and comfort of their own homes.
This year’s robust lineup features plenty of familiar names and faces, including Edgar Wright, Lucy Walker, Robin Wright, Betsy West and Julie Cohen, Siân Heder, Sion Sono, Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, Ana Katz, Kevin Macdonald, and many more. More than half the lineup is first-time filmmakers, and they range from established names like Rebecca Hall and Jerrod Carmichael to newcomers like Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr. and Carlson Young.

No offense to Kit Harrington, but he just doesn’t look like a tough guy. John Marston from Red Dead Redemption looks like someone that might shoot a person dead for spilling his drink, and Harrington has never really looked that dangerous, ever. Does anyone remember the movie Brimstone? Even then, when he really needed to summon up a dangerous look, he still had that puppy dog appearance that followed him throughout the Game of Thrones series and into his movie career. John is the type of character that might scowl at someone and cause them to look away, where Kit

The Red Dead Redemption series is among the best titles in the gaming industry, and it’d only be fair to assume that a lot of players over the years have wondered what a live-action adaptation could look like.
After spending countless hours on the story of John Marston, Rockstar Games returned in 2018 with the long-awaited prequel that took fans back and chronicled the life of Arthur Morgan. Red Dead Redemption 2 was not only critically acclaimed and hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time, but it also broke several records and became the second-biggest launch in the history of entertainment across all mediums, grossing $725 million in its opening weekend and surpassing its predecessor’s lifetime sales in just two weeks.

Jon Snow may know nothing, but to us, he's everything. Thirty-two-year-old English actor Kit Harington has portrayed the incredibly sexy Lord Commander of the Watch on Game of Thrones for almost a decade now, and it's difficult to imagine him doing anything other than guarding the Wall and battling White Walkers. But as the premiere of GoT's season eight approaches, we must acknowledge that Jon Snow's watch will soon end. So what exactly is next for Harington?
As heartbroken as we are about losing the Lord Commander, Harington himself is ready to ditch his furs and sword to take on new roles. "I'd like to step away and enjoy the obscurity, cut my hair, make myself less recognizable as the character, and go and do some other things with a completely new look and tone," Harington told Entertainment Weekly. He added, "I can't go into my next role looking the same.

The clock is ticking for HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Emilia Clarke is already sharing goodbye notes to the cast and crew as production on the final season continues, and now Kit Harington has revealed some of his plans for what he’ll do once production on the final episode ends. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Harington says he’s preparing for both a physical and career transformation.
“I’d like to step away and enjoy the obscurity, cut my hair, make myself less recognizable as the character, and go do and some other things with a completely new look and tone,” Harington said.
Harington said he’s planning to go with a “short-short” hairstyle after “Game of Thrones” wraps. The actor’s goal is to distance himself from Jon Snow as much as possible, although he’s not positive he’ll be getting rid of his beard.

The following is an actual line of dialogue from Paramount Network’s upcoming Heathers series: “She looks like if Jim Henson got in one last puppet before he died.”

When host — and living documentary legend — Steve James took the stage on Thursday night to kick off the start of the 11th Annual Cinema Eye Honors Awards at Queens’ own Museum of the Moving Image, he might have enjoyed the benefit of being tipped off as to who would dominate the ceremony. For James, the night was all about a “new generation” of filmmakers, and bringing them further into a tight-knit community that could support them for the rest of their lives.
No surprise then that Yance Ford and his debut feature, the deeply personal and long-gestating “Strong Island,” emerged as the night’s biggest winner, pulling in wins for Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Debut, and Outstanding Nonfiction Feature Film. Ford’s win for Outstanding Direction was also a history-maker: the filmmaker is the first to ever win the award for a debut film.

Burbank, CA, December 7, 2017 – See what critics are calling “the best movie of the year” when Blade Runner 2049 arrives onto 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD. From Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”) comes Alcon Entertainment’s science fiction thriller Blade Runner 2049. The main international cast also includes Ana de Armas (War Dogs), Sylvia Hoeks (Renegades), Robin Wright (Wonder Woman), Mackenzie Davis (The Martian), Carla Juri (Brimstone), and Lennie James (The Walking Dead), with Dave Bautista (the Guardians of the Galaxy films) and Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

This strikingly photographed story of a vengeful preacher and his victims in America’s old west revels too much in its savagery towards women
A lurid tale of vengeance and lust, set against the backdrop of the American west at the end of the 19th century, Brimstone stars Dakota Fanning as a mute woman persecuted by a preacher (Guy Pearce) who is determined to destroy her and everything she holds dear. Although the four-chapter structure is neatly handled and the savage backdrop strikingly photographed, there’s something a little unsavoury about this picture. It’s not the graphic violence, rape, incest and numerous shots of women being bound and flogged that are the problems, as such. It’s the hint of tumescence behind the camera accompanying these scenes that gives the whole picture a queasily sensationalist quality.

Brian De Palma action thriller Domino will see Game of Thrones stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice Van Houten opposite one another.
Legendary director Brian De Palma, who amongst other iconic efforts, directed the 1996 inaugural film in the lucrative-as-ever Mission: Impossible film franchise, returns to the action thriller table with Domino. The film is headlined by a duo Game of Thrones cast members whose characters we can't wait to see share the screen on the series before its imminent end, namely the Kingslayer himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and the Red Witch herself, Carice Van Houten.
De Palma’s directorial offering Domino – not to be confused with the late Tony Scott’s 2005 Keira Knightley-starring bounty hunter biopic – is being distributed in the U.S. by Saban Films.

I've just asked Fanning, 23, if she went method for her latest film, the grueling Western drama, Brimstone. Not that it's particularly easy to picture the actress being the type of nightmare that mails her co-stars used condoms or refuses to break character while texting or whatever staying in character might inspire here, with Fanning playing an old-timey prostitute on the run from retribution. (Stabbing Guy Pearce because he took the last bag of Doritos at craft services?) More so, the question was whether the challenge of playing mute (her character's tongue is cut out as a result of a series of truly unfortunate events that play out in the film—out now) necessitated that Fanning remain silent on set. "Oh, no! No way!" she exclaims, letting out a high-pitched...

Swedish director Daniel Espinosa might have been another foreign filmmaker working in obscurity until his film Snabba Cash (Easy Money) caught the attention of Hollywood, and he was hired to helm Safe House, an action-thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington that became a huge hit over here. (Espinosa’s next movie, the psychological thriller Child 44, failed to find much of an audience, more due to poor marketing than anything else.)
Now, Espinosa is back with Life, an outer space thriller starring Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and more, which looks at what it might be like if life was discovered on Mars, and what might happen if that life turns out to be hostile. For the astronauts of the Iss (International Space Station), it becomes a life or death situation as a single cell organism starts growing and becoming stronger and smarter, as they have to figure out...

With the upcoming Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell movies coming out over the next few weeks, one might want to take a look back to the '70s and '80s as a time when Asian productions were frequently brought to American shores.
One of the originators of that tradition was the cartoon Star Blazers, based on the Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato.
The Star Blazers animated show only had three seasons that ran from 1979 to 1984, but it created an avid fanbase with the related toys, comic books and other iterations, all of which followed the adventures of the crew of the Argo, an old battleship turned into a starship that is used to fight against the forces of Gamilon, a distant planet that attacks earth sometime in the future.
The show's fanbase has mainly been kept alive by constant reissues of the show on DVD until 2012 when...

While Marvel Studios and Warners/Dceu were busy fighting over which of their superhero battle movies was better, the comic book movie that really had the biggest impact of 2016 was probably 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, which went from an R-rated action-comedy that no one wanted to make to the global smash of a movie that grossed nearly $800 million worldwide.
A lot of that had to do with Ryan Reynolds' dedication to the character and his screenwriting collaborators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), who continued to grind away at writing the best script possible for Marvel’s snarkiest superhero.
After Deadpool became such a hugely popular hit, putting Reynolds back in the spandex was a given, and in the past few months, we’ve started to hear what is planned for Deadpool 2 with John Wick’s David Leitch directing, Drew Goddard (The Martian) helping...

Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning's Brimstone is, to say the least, intense. The grim Western (in select theaters and On Demand now) sees Pearce playing a reverend out for revenge -- revealing anything else about his sinister man of God would constitute too big a breach of spoilers. Fanning co-stars as a murderous old-timey prostitute who's had her tongue cut out. "It's not a crazy, upbeat, feel-good comedy," Pearce deadpanned. "It's quite intense." The Australian actor called up Et to discuss working with Fanning, explain why people mistakenly thought they were actually filming Game of Thrones, and give an update on his next project, Alien: Covenant.
Exclusive: Dakota Fanning Gets Badass and Bloody in New Trailer and Poster for Western 'Brimstone'
Et: I wanted to start by saying congratulations! This must be a special movie for you, seeing as not every movie ultimately leads to a baby. [Pearce and co-star Carice van Houten welcomed a son, Monte, in August.]

In 2005, director Greg McLean first got attention with his Aussie thriller Wolf Creek, which led to a sequel and a recent cable mini-series, as he continued to work in the horror realm.
McLean’s latest movie The Belko Experiment is actually based on an original idea by James Gunn, who came up with the idea and wrote the script years ago, but got too busy developing Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy to make the movie. He called upon McLean to develop the idea of a group of corporate employees who find themselves in a situation where they need to kill in order to survive the exact reverse of a team-building situation.
John Gallagher, Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane) plays Mike Milch, a popular employee at the Belko Corporation, whose building in Bogota, Colombia is thrown into disarray when a voice comes over the P.A. telling the 80 employees that they need...

In Brimstone, a Western that’s the English-language debut of Dutch director Martin Koolhoven, young actress Dakota Fanning amazes with her best performance yet, giving life to a character that since the first chapter (the film is divided in four) is revealed as unique. Liz is a mute woman who, with the help of her little daughter, assists women in labor. While the setting is the Old American West, her life is relatively calm as she lives with her husband, stepson and daughter in a town that doesn’t seem to be as wild as one can expect. A lot changes, though, when a complicated labor forces the protagonist to save the baby or the mother -- she ends up keeping alive the latter -- something the...

Guy Pearce has continued to defy being pigeonholed into a stereotype and as a result, his career has been peppered by a range of characters with motivations ranging from the good to the ill-advised but none have been as deplorable as his role as The Reverend in Brimstone.
Pearce is the leader of a group of Dutch ex-patriots and religious zealots who left the motherland and settled in the United States, following a calling to create a new branch of Christianity which is pure and free of the corruption. We first meet him in the opening scenes of Brimstone as he arrives as the new pastor for a small community where Liz (Dakota Fanning) is a practicing midwife and from the moment she sets eyes on him, it's clear this man is someone to be feared.
