This morning’s Horror Highlights takes our readers to Hell Town, as Daily Dead did a Q&A with Steve Balderson, the co-writer/co-director of the film. Also: production details and an official poster for The Recall and UK release details for Blackburn.
Daily Dead’s Q&A with co-writer/co-director of Hell Town, Steve Balderson: “Debbie Rochon (Model Hunger, Return to Nuke ‘Em High, The Theater Bizarre) headlines as the hostess of the three surviving episodes of “Hell Town”, following the melodramatic, small-town and potentially short-lived lives of Krysten Day, Amanda Deibert, Owen Lawless, Ben Windholz, Jennifer Grace, and Balderson muse Pleasant Gehman.
Hell Town follows the melodramatic antics of high school seniors clashing over love, sex, and betrayal. In the middle of all the everyday drama of one-sided infatuations, backstabbing bitchiness, bottled-up sexuality, sibling rivalry and general small-town angst, the Letter Jacket Killer is killing students in a variety of sadistic ways.

The zombie romantic comedy is a difficult film to get right. It all depends on the tone of the script and the direction taken by the filmmaker in bringing it to the screen. Films in this very specific sub-genre either focus primarily on one of the elements – love (Warm Bodies), laughs (A Little Bit Zombie), or blood and guts (Braindead, aka Dead Alive) – or strike a fine balance between all three (Shaun of the Dead, Deathgasm), all to varying degrees of success. In Night of the Living Deb, director Kyle Rankin (Infestation) seems to be trying for the latter, but does he succeed?

It's always refreshing to watch a film that has a new and fun take on the zombie metaphor. In the case of A Little Bit Zombie, directed by Casey Walker, that take is the change that love and marriage bring. The film is a very funny and unique take on the usual zombie film, and even the zombie comedy, through its use of some outrageous characters, screwball comedy and familial situations that had me and the audience laughing pretty continuously.Steve (Kristopher Turner), his fiancee Tina (Crystal Lowe), his sister Sarah (Kristen Hager) and her husband Craig (Shawn Roberts) are taking a little cottage vacation before the big wedding day. Tina is, to be frank, something of a bridezilla, and Steve spends the first part of...

Today's batch of MPAA ratings is nearly void of any titles of interest outside of the final one. Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) steps behind the camera for her feature directorial debut, working from her own script for what is still being called the Untitled Diablo Cody Project, though it has been referred to as Lamb of God in the past. The film is a comedy starring Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages) as a sheltered young woman who loses her faith after a plane crash and decides to go to Las Vegas to experience the wild side of life. On her journey, she meets unlikely companions (Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer) who inadvertently help her find her true self. It has earned a PG-13 rating for sexual material, substance abuse, some language and thematic elements and as of now still doesn't have a distributor, let alone a release date. I...

The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

Steve and Tina are about to get married, a prospect that gravely disturbs Steve’s sister who–in addition to being married to Steve’s best friend–thinks Tina is as right for him as an angry hornet’s nest is for a family picnic. Much in that same vein, Steve thinks it wise to take the quartet to the family cabin for the weekend so everyone can learn to play nice. Adding to the incredibly tense proceedings is a mosquito who managed to feed on a walking corpse a few miles over. You see, a pair of expert zombie hunters were just wrapping up the last loose ends of an undead carnival when the pesky insect sneaked a bite and made his way over to the cabin. The mosquito bites Steve several times, and soon he begins showing the classic tell-tale signs of zombism. But can this nice-guy zombie be cured? The...

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

Bride and groom-to-be, Steve and Tina, and their best man and matron of honor take to a cabin in the woods for a little pre-wedding retreat. Shortly following their arrival, Steve is bitten by a mosquito. It's no ordinary mosquito, however. It's an insect hosting a virus that turns humans in to the brain obsessed, undead.
A Little Bit Zombie starts out with a very low budget quality and it never completely loses it. But, it definitely grew on me as the film played out. This was a good example of a film that actually gets better as it goes on, rather than starting out good and losing steam at the end. It takes a while to find its footing, but when it does, its pretty good. Everything from the pacing to the dialogue improved in the last 30 minutes of the movie.

Fans of Syfy's "Being Human" who have been wondering whether Nora would be around in Season 3 needn't wonder any longer as the actress who portrays the character, Kristen Hager, has been promoted to a series regular.
Hager (A Little Bit Zombie) first appeared in the Season One episode "Wouldn't It Be Nice (If We Were Human)." She has since co-starred in more than a dozen episodes, the most recent being the Season Two finale.
"Being Human" will return in 2013. It tells the tale of three roommates – vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath), and werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington) – who share their secrets and a Boston brownstone. Hager's Nora is a werewolf and Josh's on-and-off girl friend.
Executive Producers are showrunner/writer Anna Fricke, Michael Prupas, Adam Kane, writer Jeremy Carver (also the new co-showrunner for "Supernnatural"), Rob Pursey, and Toby Whithouse. Irene Litinsky is Producer.

Stephen McHattie says he doesn.t know why horror filmmakers turn to him so often for the showiest parts. They do though, and amongst his vast credits are more horrors than most actors have done or would hope to do in a lifetime. There are other genres, in film on TV and onstage, but McHattie has something fierce and profound about him, and horror may be his natural home. This month Casey Walker.s A Little Bit Zombie hits the theatres featuring McHattie as the exuberantly out .of-control undead hunter who wields his gun like a macabre dance partner. There is something originally energetic about his work in Zombie together with arrogance so complete that it.s endearing.

We're not going to make the cliché Canadian joke here. No Mackenzie Brothers reference or hosers or eh? We're not even going to ask if you're elbow deep in Tim Horton's donuts. We've just got a request from filmmaker Casey Walker ... go see A Little Bit Zombie.
Judging by the hilarious trailer for the film, which was produced and directed by Walker, A Little Bit Zombie might be this year's Tucker and Dale Versus Evil or The Cottage. This looks like a horror-comedy that nails it. It even has a Dead Alive feel to it. We get nothing but good vibes from what we've seen so far.
After selling out loads of festival screenings A Little Bit Zombie is making its theatrical debut May 17 on 20 screens across Canada. A wider release through Landmark Cinemas is promised if the film initially performs well. And that's where you can help. If you're...

Director Casey Walker is not resting on his laurels while his debut hit, A Little Bit Zombie (Albz) hits the film festival circuit. It will be playing at the Calgary Underground Film Festival April 18th next. For the rest of the world, this producer revealed that the plans are for this film to receive a wider theatrical release in May, become available on DVD/Blu-ray in August and appear on Movie Central in October.
When reflecting back on this project, he revealed that it happened after meeting Chris Bond (co-writer of "Evil Dead: The Musical") and Trevor Martin ("Ed," "Evil Dead: The Musical," Toronto Show). They approached him about the idea and he was on board at the start. A Little Bit Zombie
Directed by Casey Walker
Written by Christopher Turner and Trevor Martin
Canada, 2011
A great film is one that seems new ever time you watch it, and although Casey Walker’s Canadian horror comedy, A Little Bit Zombie, isn’t something we’ve never seen before, it nevertheless rises to the level of greatness due to it’s inherent ability to embrace and transcend tired genre conventions. Smart, well crafted, and painfully funny, A Little Bit Zombie not only reanimates the zombie genre, it singlehandedly brings Canadian Cinema back to life.
Unaware of an apparent zombie epidemic, a mild mannered Human Resource manager goes on a family vacation to his cottage with his inescapable Bridezilla-to-be, his indignant sister, and his insolent brother-in-law. After been bitten by an infected mosquito (you read that right), he has to fend off his cerebral eating urges, deal with two antithetical zombie hunters,...

Casey Walker's horror comedy A Little Bit Zombie is a sneaky little charmer of a movie. A low budget, crowd funded effort it's clever, bloody and - most importantly - fun stuff bolstered by a wickedly over the top performance by Stephen McHattie as a hard boiled zombie hunter in pursuit of Steve, a normal guy who just happens to be a little bit zombie after being bitten by a zombie infected mosquito. In the screenplay co-written by Christopher Bond, co-creator of 'Evil Dead The Musical', and Trevor Martin, Steve (Kristopher Turner) gets infected by a virus the week before his wedding and tries to keep it together so as to not incur the wrath of his Bridezilla-to-be (Crystal Lowe). Artist Tom Hodge, better known as The Dude Designs, is bringing back the lost art of the film poster and video cover art. Like many of us Tom's bored senseless by modern poster art and states that 'Now we need explosions, exploitation and helicopters!!!' - we couldn't agree more Tom. His latest creation is a fantastic new one-sheet for Casey Walkers horror-comedy 'A Little Bit Zombie'. It features all the main cast members including Steve (played by Kristopher Turner), our male lead whom gets infected by a virus at a bachelor party, obsessed zombie hunter (Stephen McHattie) and the sexy 'Final Destination 3' star Crystal Lowe who plays Steve's Bridezilla-to-be. Shawn Roberts, Kristen Hager, Emilie Ullerup, Robert Maillet and George Buza all co-star in the zombie project which was scripted by by Trevor Martin and Christopher Bond. Check out the excellent new artwork below....

Check out a new poster for director Casey Walker’s horror/comedy “A Little Bit Zombie”. The poster was designed by Tom Hodge aka The Dude Designs, and it’s a groovy looking throwback. According to Hodge, the poster is his ode to “fantasy art school of the 70′s” and artists like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and John Bolton. Infected by a virus, a mild mannered Hr manager attempts to fulfill his overwhelming desire for brains, all while trying to keep it together so as not to incur the wrath of his bridezilla-to-be. Starring Stephen McHattie, Kristopher Turner, Crystal Lowe, Shawn Roberts, Kristen Hager, and Emilie Ullerup. (And oh, the latest trailer for “A Little Bit Zombie” above in case you missed it.)...

We’ve got the new poster for A Little Bit Zombie, the upcoming zombie comedy from Casey Walker. The poster was designed from Tom Hodge, who you should know from his poster designs for Hobo With a Shotgun and The Innkeepers.
Tom Hodge had the following to say about the new poster: “This was the first time i got to really swing my design bat at comedy. After discussing some ideas with Casey, we both seemed to be coming from the same direction – we really wanted the poster to be every bit as visually entertaining as the film is funny, by creating something that was epic, totally Ott for the subject matter.
So this poster design really came to be a love letter to the whole fantasy art school of the 70′s and such great artists who inspired me growing up, like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and John Bolton.
