- While in Argentina attempting to exchange a spy, an assassin attacks Annie and the spy, Carlo Reni. Forced on the run, Annie and Carlo have to evade arrest and figure out who set them up before the assassin can catch up with them.
- Auggie ponders an offer from Arthur to head the CIA's congressional affairs, a promotion which would end his field career forever. Italian activist and blog-reporter Carlo Reni is to be exchanged for another 'spy' in Argentina, where official Jorge only gave informal permission, so if it isn't cleared smoothly in minutes as planned, everyone may be arrested. As soon as Annie, the CIA chaperon, escorts Carlo out, a hit-man's fire forces them to run from him and the Argentine operations. The home front suspects and finds dirty play from State Department, presumably executive Romano Genard, while Jorge and Annie get to know and appreciate each-other.—KGF Vissers
- Auggie (Christopher Gorham) gives Annie (Piper Perabo) instructions on how to do a spy exchange. She's picking up an Italian spy in a private plane to fly to Argentina for an exchange. Auggie promises it'll take five minutes.
Meanwhile, back on the small plane before the exchange the Italian, Carlo Reni, rants about why people hate the CIA. She shuts him up by answering in Italian. He claims he's a journalist, not a spy.
They land. Entre Rios Province, Argentina They're on a landing strip in the middle of nowhere. Annie doesn't even have cell service. She goes outside for a signal and reaches Auggie.
The other plane isn't there. Auggie says their contact was forced to land in the Fauklands because of bad weather. He tells her to kill some time. Her Italian spy takes off running.
She goes after him and tackles him in a wheat field. He says he doesn't want to go back to Italy because people there want to kill him. They look back to their plane in time to see a black car pull up. Someone shoots their pilot. Annie tells Carlo to run.
After they're clear, Annie explains she doesn't have a gun, but she's sure her agency is planning a safe exit.
Back at Langley, Joan (Kari Matchett) gets yelled at via teleconference by Jorge in Buenos Airies and Romano Gennaro at the Italian Embassy.
Jorge mentions the CIA asked him to keep it off the books, so if he catches Annie or Carlo he'll be forced to arrest them.
Joan wants to know more about Carlo. Joan sends Auggie to see Arthur (Peter Gallagher), which Auggie finds weird since they're in the middle of an op.
Back in Argentina, Annie assures Carlo she has a plan. He suggests they go to his friends in a small beach town. She wants to follow protocol, but he thinks the CIA is hanging her out to dry. She wants to take him to a safe place in town.
She drags him away.
In with Arthur, Auggie tries to be excited about the new job being offered. Auggie would run the Office of Congressional Affairs, a huge raise. But it would mean he could never go covert again. He'd be one of three public faces for the CIA, along with Arthur.
Arthur gives him the hard sell. He wants him to start next week. Auggie is speechless.
Jai (Sendhil Ramamurthy) reads up on Annie's Italian, Carlo Reni. He was arrested for reading the trash at the bureau of land management. The FBI had him for five hours before the Italian intelligence agency offered a trade, blowing his cover. He previously worked in Iran. He got kicked out for publishing articles unfavorable to the government.
Joan asks Auggie to confirm there's a jet in the Fauklands. She also wants to know who the assassin is.
Back in the field, Annie buys a peasant's truck to drive in to town. She handcuffs Carlo to the truck inside. He offers to drive, saying she's going to get them lost.
At Langley, Auggie tells Joan there is official record of a plane in customs hold, but he can't promise it's not a fake notice. Auggie thinks the assassin might be Helmut Drum, a Chechen separatist for hire. They can't reach Annie.
She sputters down a back road in her peasant truck. It slowly overheats and comes to a sputtering stop. She checks out the engine. Carlo continues to deny he's a spy. He says he doesn't know who might want to kill him. Annie successfully fixes the truck and gets them going again.
Stopped in a small town, Annie messes with the engine. Carlo wants to check his blog, but she thinks it would only tip off the assassin. Annie knows if the Argentinian authorities catch them, they'll be imprisoned as spies.
She handcuffs herself to Carlo. She then takes him inside to bribe him with a macchiato. He thinks Annie likes him. She doesn't deny it, but says she's either the best operative she's ever seen or the worst. She gets indignant and says he's wrong about the CIA. He says he needs ot use the bathroom and promises on his mother's grave he won't run.
Once in the bathroom, he immediately tries to figure out how to get out the window. Annie catches him falling out the other side. His mother isn't dead.
They head off back in the truck again. On the road they come upon a police road block. They're trying to figure out what it's doing there when their front windshield is shot out. The assassin is behind them, shooting. Annie takes off, then spins the truck around in the middle of the street. She plows backward through the roadblock as the police open fire. The assassin drives off.
Joan has lunch with Romano Gennaro, the Italian Embassy guy. She talks in code, then says she needs to tell the State Department. Romano promises they're in this together. It'll all work out.
Driving back, Joan recounts she's sure Romano is dirty and they're being played. Jai updates her about Annie busting through a barricade. There's a countrywide APB out for her. Joan tells him to plan for an extraction.
Back on the road, Annie tells Carlo to take his clothes off. She says there's no way the hitter knew where they were.
She asked if anyone visited him while he was in custody.
Carlo says one person from the embassy did, but he doesn't know his name. Carlo hands over his belt. Annie finds the bug. She can't believe he didn't.
She tells Carlo to start walking. Carlo tells Annie he thinks he's being hunted because of a story he's been working on about the Italian Oil Conglomerate (OCU) and the Italian government and oil rigs in South America.
Buenos Aires Carlo tells Annie he followed the money. He is close to publishing something about the bribes. He says again he's not a spy. He has been working on the story for two years. Annie thinks the Italian embassy might not be the place to go. Joan calls.
She tells Annie not to go to the Italian embassy. They're working on an extraction. Annie tells her the package may not be what they thought.
Auggie tells her to go to the US President's Line at the wharf, berth 28.
They tell her two of Carlo's OCU contacts -- Renaldo and Vasquez -- have turned up dead. Annie tells Carlo. He's upset he got them killed.
She tells him they have to move. They're stopped by a police officer. Annie says the cuffs are because her boyfriend is kinky. Carlo tells the officer to get her away from him. She has to unlock them and then politely knocks the officer down. Carlo gets away in the crowd.
Carlo makes his way to a newspaper office. Annie finds him there. She believes he's really just a writer, but wants to keep him safe and get him to the extraction point.
He wants to get his story out before he gets killed.
"It's not the battles won, Annie. It's the battles waged. I think you can understand that, if you are who I think you are," he tells her.
Annie gives him time to turn over his story.
At the CIA, Auggie tells Arthur he thinks he has an ulterior motive and is using him because he's feel-good PR. Auggie asks who his boss would be. Arthur says him and the DCI.
Auggie asks about perks, like, say, an extraction in a foreign country.
Carlo checks in with the local paper. It turns out they're on the same story. They have the name of the guy in the Italian Embassy: Romano Genarro. He's taking bribes.
Outside, Annie leads them toward the extraction point at the wharf.
Joan briefs Jorge in Buenos Airies, telling him about Gennaro. Jorge tells her it changes nothing since Annie busted through a barricade and assaulted a police officer (the one she politely knocked down). Joan tells him she'll always remember if he harms one of her people. It will affect their relationship next time.
At the wharf, Annie and Carlo see the assassin. She thinks someone at the newspaper tipped him off. She starts to uncuff Carlo, but drops the key down a grate.
Annie picks up a nearby piece of pipe and assures Carlo her people will be there, since they don't think of her as dispensable.
Annie jumps out and whacks the assassin. He gets a shot in on Carlo, but they both knock him down and choke him with their handcuffs as dockworkers look on. Annie sees a helicopter approaching and knows that's their ride.
As they're walking toward the helicopter, local police pull up with guns drawn. Jorge is there with them. He has his gun drawn and compliments Annie on staying alive. Then he fires -- at the assassin who has stood up behind them. He stops Annie to tell her to tell Joan he looks forward to "next time." Annie and Carlo both get on the chopper.
Back at Langley, Jai asks Auggie about Arthur's job offer. "Looks like you're his boy now. Good luck with that," Jai says.
Carlo tells Annie he might have to rethink some of his positions on the CIA. He invites her to Italy. He kisses her good bye -- on the cheek.
In a car ride back in DC, Annie reads Carlo's story. She has a message from Auggie, saying he has some news.
