Moroccan director Leïla Kilani presented the rough cut of her second feature film, “Joint Possession,” in the post-production section of Marrakech Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops. She spoke to Variety about the film, which she describes as a “war film, inside a family.”
Kilani’s debut feature “Sur la Planche” (“On the Edge”), about two women flirting with crime in Tangiers, screened in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2011, and went on to enjoy considerable success and prizes.
She began shooting “Joint Possession” in 2015 and the picture has evolved organically over the past four years.

The fifth edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival will hold retrospectives of Girish Kasaravalli and Jahnu Barua among others. Five of Kasaravalli’s films: Tabarana Kathe (1986), Kraurya (1996), Thaayi Saheba (1997), Dweepa (2003) and Hasina (2004)will be screened. While Barua’s Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Banani (1990), Firingoti (1992) and Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door(1995) will be screened.

On the Edge, the first full-length feature by the Moroccan director Leïla Kilani, is powered by a form of black magic that should appeal to audiences everywhere, with bags of energy, a team of explosive young actresses and a poetic hold-up. Added to which this socially aware intrigue is suffused by the Arab spring.
The setting is a city coming to grips with the global market. Young women, drawn from all over Morocco by the promise of social advancement, converge on the new free trade zone and adjoining port. They are split into two categories – textile workers and shrimp-peelers – not blessed with the same appeal. The former enjoy the prestige of a trade connected to leading international brands. The latter do piece-work that taints them with a shameful stink of fish.

"The Tati-inspired dance trio of Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy are at it again, crafting an awfully similar follow-up to their previous feature, Rumba." Blake Williams for Ioncinema: "The Fairy is light on magic and the supernatural, but flutters breezily along with joke-a-minute fluff…. As in their other films, the 'plot' — this one involving a wish-granting fairy — is only really a conceit by which to give the illusion of continuity to what is essentially a string of short films." Screen's Fionnuala Halligan's enjoyed it, though: "Theirs is an old-fashioned, almost silent, routine (their first feature L'Iceberg was virtually wordless) blended beautifully with an arresting dance element." In the Hollywood Reporter, Jordan Mintzer notes that "Tati's hand is evident in the exceptionally precise art direction and camerawork by regulars Nicholas Girault and Claire Childeric."
