After the Finnish Civil War in 1918, a young nation is searching for its own identity. Instead of a German-led monarchy, Finland becomes a presidential republic. K. J. Ståhlberg serves as its first president, succeeded by L. K. Relander.

P. E. Svinhufvud is narrowly elected as the third president in 1931, a politically unstable time of rising nationalism and anti-communism. Finnish-Soviet relations deteriorate and Kyösti Kallio has to lead Finland through the Winter War.

The ailing Kallio resigns after the Moscow Peace Treaty in 1940. His successor Risto Ryti agrees to secret military cooperation with Germany. Mannerheim becomes the president and the Moscow Armistice in 1944 ends the Continuation War.

The Soviet Control Commission arrives to Finland in 1944 and war-responsibility trials follows. President Paasikivi manages to stabilize Finland's position and Finno-Soviet Treaty is signed in 1948. This paves the way to the Kekkonen-era.
