Burtnett Offers Up Three Nice Numbers
Earl Burtnett and His Biltmore Hotel Orchestra (1928)
*** (out of 4)
This short was the fourth of four that Earl Burtnett would make at Vitaphone in 1928. As with the previous ones, this here features three songs by Burtnett and his ten-man orchestra. To date I've only seen the first and fourth one but they were both quite catchy and well worth watching if you're a fan of Vitaphone or the music from this era. This one here starts off with "I Fell Head Over Heels in Love," which was a catchy number that perfectly fit with the type of love songs of the era. "An Old Guitar and an Old Refrain" comes with an introduction and finally we get "Blue River" to close things out. Burtnett certainly had a distinct sound and there's no question that he was making some pretty good music from what I could tell after watching two shorts. I think fans of this type of music are really going to enjoy his act and apparently Vitaphone did as well since most people just got one film and two if they were lucky. It appears this was shot with three separate cameras with one capturing the entire stage in a long shot and then two others catching the right and left side of the stage with medium shots.
