Box Office – Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon’s Crew is amongst Top-10 female centric films after Week One ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Crew continues to be in the record books after spending one week in theatres. It had a really good opening when it started in double digits, and then that stayed on to be the case for rest of the weekend as well when more than 10 crores kept coming in. Though Monday hold was quite good, there were steady numbers that kept coming between Tuesday to Thursday. That said, the drops were there and while they were not drastic, they were negligible. As a result, the Crew has to now contend with being in the Top-10 instead of being in the top 5.
Here Are the Week One/first 7 day numbers of the Top-10 Female-Centric Films: The Kerala Story – 81.07 crores Gangubai Kathiawadi – 68.93 crores Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi – 61.15 crores Veere Di Wedding...

Box Office – Tabu, Kareena, Kriti’s Crew is amongst Top-5 biggest weekend openers for a female centric film, edges past Alia Bhatt’s Dear Zindagi ( Photo Credit – Instagram; iMDb )
Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have done it. Their film has gone beyond just the opening day bonanza and has now done consistently well right through the weekend as well. It has been a bountiful score for the film, allowing it to find a place amongst the Top-5 weekend openers of all time. Interestingly, three out of these have come post-pandemic – Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kerala Story, and Crew, each of which belongs to a different genre. That said, while the first two in the list are hard-hitting dramas, its Crew, which is light-hearted.
In fact, there is more. If one looks at the entire Top 10, then it’s only Crew and Veere Di Wedding which are light-hearted whereas the remaining eight all are drama.

Actress Divya Dutta has opened up about mental health issues and dealing with depression. She revealed how tough it was for her to come out of it and also emphasised that women need to be more vocal about these issues.
Divya said: “I have been through depression and came out of it. But everyone cannot do it. People should know that it’s perfectly ok to talk about it. Don’t try to suppress it. If someone appears depressed, give them an ear. Listen to them. Depression is not madness. Mental health issues are to be looked at as an illness and treated as one.”
The actress believes that it’s time women become more vocal about their issues.
She asserted that mental health problems do not translate into madness. Hence, they need to be explained and the myths need to be broken.
“The most important and yet less spoken topic is mental health.

Ki & Ka has taken a good opening at the Box Office. As was predicted, the film was on track to register 40%-50% occupancy on Day One, and this is how the average footfalls turned out to be eventually. The film has collected 7.3 crore on Friday and this is a good start for the Eros and Balki production, considering the genre, release size and target audience that it was aiming for.
This is the biggest opener ever for Balki as Ki & Ka [7.3 crore] on its opening day has collected more than double of Shamitabh [3.5 crore] and is far ahead of Paa [2.15 crore] and Cheeni Kum [which had lifetime total of 17.3 crore]. The film has also taken a bigger opening than a much massy Ghayal Once Again [7.2 crore] and targeted-at-similar-audience Kapoor & Sons [6.85 crore]. The way word of mouth is spreading for the film, the film is set to have the second highest weekend of the year.

When he is not busy preening posturing and pontificating Madhur Bhandarkar can actually tell a spanking good story. Calendar Girls is familiar Bhandarkar territory. He penetrates the sham behind the glam of the entertainment industry and piece by piece dismantles its hypocrisies and double-speak.
Looking at the grime behind the glamour Calendar Girls builds a solid back-story for each of the five calendar girls. Akansha Puri, Avani Modi, Kyra Dutt, Ruhi Singh, Satarupa Pyne…agent provocateurs all, with bodies lithe enough to look they are for bikinis-born. None of the five girls can be said to be able actresses….not now at least. Though a couple of them do show some promise.
Maybe some day….
The telling of the intricately inter-woven tale ensures that the quintet of sexy girls’ lack of genuine acting chops does not take away from the sheer velocity in the narration. There is a brisk business-like quality to Bhandarkar’s story,...

Reacting strongly to reports in the press that the release of Madhur Bhandarkar's new film Calendar Girls is delayed from August to September, as the director is getting ready for a long battle with the Censor Board over its content, Censor Chief Pahlaj Nihalani says, "I've heard other reasons for why Madhur's film is being postponed. It's definitely not because of Censor problems. At least, there's no problem from our end." Elaborating on the cuts ordered in Calendar Girls, Pahlajji says, "There were absolutely No visual cuts. We cut some cusswords and words referring to women as 'bitches' etc. In no way do these cuts hamper the flow of the film. Rahi baat Adults certificate ki. Why should Madhur be bothered if we certified the film for an adult audience. Has he made Calendar Girls for children? Is this a Walt Disney entertainer? It's about girls in bikinis posing for calendar.

While she is an actor par excellence, it seems Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan also loves (rather wants) to be known as the 'item queen'. In past few years she has done an array of exotic and naughty dance numbers (in films like Gabbar, Heroine, Dabnagg 2, Don, Billu, Agent Vinod) and now she adds yet another track to her list with 'Mera Naam Mary Hai' from the film Brothers.
While Kareena tries every bit to grab eyeballs with her latkas and jhatkas, hoot for her, Bebo somehow looks too sophisticated for the cheesy item number. Well, here are the five reasons that will make you also believe how Kareena looks a misfit in this song or she is simply not meant to do these numbers. Take a look:

The Kapoors need no introduction! Along with good looks, they have been blessed with acting skills. And good performance runs in their blood! The very gorgeous Kareena Kapoor Khan is no different. She first studied It and Microcomputers and then a jump to Law. What next? We're sure you'll get it right. It is obvious that she was going to get into acting eventually as she belonged to this field. Bebo, who made her debut in Bollywood as an actress with Refugee has completed 15 years today in this industry. From Kapoor to becoming a Khan, it's been a royal journey for this beautiful actress. But it is given that chaand mein bhi daag hota hai (there is a spot in the moon too) and same is the case with Kareena - she was involved in many controversies (including catfights) and also made headlines with these controversies. Can a revealing costume of a 'Calendar Girl' emerging from the sea be considered as a 'shocking nude'? Well, for some 'sources' out there, it did appear to be the case, who were left wondering if filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar had crossed a certain line with the manner in which the promo of his upcoming offering Calendar Girls was cut. However, this time around the only difference is that Bhandarkar, who doesn't mind courting controversy with practically every film of his since Chandni Bar, has been left amused himself. "Nude shot? But where is it? Even he would like to see if there is any in Calendar Girls because as far as he knows, he hasn't directed any such scene for the film, least of it including it in the promo and then sending it out to the Censors no less. Really, some imagination this is," wonders a source close to the filmmaker,...

It looks like Madhur Bhandarkar has got quite a tantalizing film lined up for release. His next feature Calendar Girl, which comes after the fiasco that was his last release Heroine and the aborted attempt to start another film Madamjee starring Priyanka Chopra, is suffused in sufficient slivers of sensationalism.
Sources at the Censor Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc) reveal that the film's first trailer was submitted for certification. And the results were....explosive!
Says a source, "The trailer contains a lot of provocative and sensuous content. There was even a shot of nude woman which we had to of course snip off before granting the trailer a 'U/A' certificate. We don't know how or why Bhandarkar came to us with a trailer that contained a nude shot. He should know that such a shot can never be passed in a trailer."
The 'U/A' certificate for the trailer automatically limits its reach.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has taken over Cannes. The word on the Croisette is that the world's most beautiful woman is in town, and everyone wants to get a glimpse of her.
The locals lining up against the barriers of the red carpet outside the Palais des Festivals peer into the glittering world of the stars who descend en masse on their otherwise sleepy, seaside town. They tell me in their lilting French accents: "We don't know much about Bollywood, but we've come to see the beautiful woman from India, Aishwarya."
They may not have seen her movies, but the French people know and love Aishwarya and have embraced her as their own. Cannes has been unfaltering in waging a love affair with Aishwarya that has lasted 13 years, and today that romance is in full bloom. When she takes to the red carpet, it's as if the whole city has come to a standstill.

Was Madhur Bhandarkar quoting a figure of 5 crore for directing Madamjee? And was that the reason that resulted in the film with Priyanka Chopra, for whom this was also going to be a maiden production, not really taking off? Now these have been the recent rumors making the rounds about the two National Award winners who were set to collaborate on one of the most talked about and hyped films in the last couple of years. This, when the official announcement around the actual shooting schedule and supporting cast was never announced. The truth though, as is always the case when it comes to rumors, hearsay and speculations, is altogether different. "There have been many reports about why the film didn't take off, even though nothing has been official about that," says a source close to Madhur, "To say that he was charging an unreasonable amount of money to direct Madamjee is absolutely baseless,...

Such an amount, especially after the Heroine debacle and the fact that he is making Calendar Girls which is not what we call an A-list movie didn't make sense. The studio that will be collaborating with PC for the film,...

Teresa Wright-Samuel Goldwyn association comes to a nasty end (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt': Alfred Hitchcock Heroine in His Favorite Film.") Whether or not because she was aware that Enchantment wasn't going to be the hit she needed – or perhaps some other disagreement with Samuel Goldwyn or personal issue with husband Niven Busch – Teresa Wright, claiming illness, refused to go to New York City to promote the film. (Top image: Teresa Wright in a publicity shot for The Men.) Goldwyn had previously announced that Wright, whose contract still had another four and half years to run, was to star in a film version of J.D. Salinger's 1948 short story "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut." Instead, he unceremoniously – and quite publicly – fired her.[1] The Goldwyn organization issued a statement, explaining that besides refusing the assignment to travel to New York to help generate pre-opening publicity for Enchantment,...

From giving a sneak peek into the glamour world with Page 3, Fashion and Heroine to revealing the dark world behind poverty and its nexus with crime in films like Chandni Bar and Traffic Signal, Madhur Bhandarkar normally likes to portray the truth amidst superficial societies and shallow relationships. Now, the filmmaker has decided to expose the life of models in his upcoming film Calendar Girls. The filmmaker not only likes to deal with such topics but he also unabashedly likes to express his opinions on matters and the recent one was when he extended his support towards colleague and director Anurag Kashyap in his battle with the Censor Board for anti-smoking warnings. Both filmmakers were of the opinion that the anti-smoking disclaimer which is often shown during a smoking sequence in the film is not necessary. However, the Censor Board has been adamant in its decision and recently even...

With just a couple of months left and the pre-shoot preparation required for the actresses who would be coming on board, Bhandarkar's team is working ferociously in finding the...

10. Chitrangada Singh (I, Me Aur Main)
Beginning her career as a model in Delhi, Chitrangada Singh made her debut on the Bollywood screen with Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005). The year 2013 saw Chitrangada as Anushka Lal opposite John Abraham in I, Me Aur Main (Dir. Kapil Sharma). Playing the role of a girlfriend who is frustrated at her boyfriend Ishaan for the lack of responsibilities and maturity he shows, Chitrangada gauged the conflicting emotions gracefully. To celebrate acclaimed Bollywood playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan’s UK tour, the team at BollySpice thought it would be cool to put together a special feature which looks at her greatest songs. Sunidhi is unsurprisingly in-demand amongst Bollywood filmmakers, who want her voice to be mimed by some of the hottest actresses in the industry. Her success is evident in the fact that she will be gracing the stage of the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London this Friday as part of her UK tour.
Having first acquired popularity by singing the songs for the film Mast (1999), Sunidhi is considered one of few who can use her voice to give it that provocative touch. She has sung to some of Bollywood’s most iconic tracks and has to some extent contributed towards the popularity of actresses like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu by lending them her voice in their films.

Satyagraha opened on expected lines and with the kind of massive release that it got for itself, even an opening that hovered around the 50%-60% mark was good enough to make it go past the 10 crore mark on Friday. Collections continued to be stable over the rest of the weekend, hence resulting in around 38 crore* coming in. In the process, it has also left behind the 30 crore opening weekend of Raajneeti.
Now it has to be seen if the Prakash Jha directed affair brings on consistent collections during the weekdays as well and leaves behind the 54 crore first week that Raajneeti had enjoyed. Considering the fact that it belongs to the socio-political genre that has seldom brought in moolah, this would be fantastic. The film is mounted on a huge scale though with a massive star cast to boast of which means it needs to have a good run for many more days to follow.

In Prakash Jha's Satyagraha there is a very romantic erotic love song 'Ras Se Bhare Tore Nain Saawariya'. It's the song where Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan (yes, that's how she is billed for the first time in the credit titles of Satyagraha) get intimate.
The sequence required Kareena and Devgn to kiss and make love.
However one hears Kareena, otherwise a very dedicated artiste on location in Bhopal, flatly refused do the intimate scene with her co-star.
In Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara, Kareena had done some very intimate scenes with Devgn. But that came before her marriage.
Says a source from the Satyagraha location, "Prakashji wanted at least a brush-on-the-lips since this was a very passionate moment between the lead pair. But now after marriage, Kareena won't do any intimate scenes with any of her co-stars. Not even her own husband Saif. There is a certain code...

For the music of the film, Jha brought in the great duo of Salim and Sulaiman, who in turn brought in some incredible singers. Both Shweta and Shraddha Pandit are featured on the Ost and what is so cool is that this is only the second time the gorgeous songstress sisters have sung in the same film. We caught up with them to ask about their songs in Satyagraha, working with Salim-Sulaiman and much more!
