“Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” may be the biggest original TV series premiere Canada has ever had. That means, when that famous “dun-dun” opens the series on Feb. 22 via Citytv, the pressure is on.
It’s notoriously hard to get a show greenlit in Canada. Funding challenges, market size and competition from U.S. acquisitions mean few, if any, Canadian series debut on the Big 3 commercial networks each season. Even public broadcaster CBC, which boasts the highest number of originals on a major network, still relies on acquisitions to fill out its primetime programming grid.
Figuring out how to make noise with a new series in a crowded landscape isn’t a uniquely Canadian challenge, but there are more hurdles here. That’s why from the beginning, a Canadian adaptation of “Criminal Intent” felt like a win — at least from a viewership and marketing standpoint. It’s a recognizable...

U.S. streaming giants were already in an uncomfortable position after Canada reined them in with first-time spending obligations to support the production of homegrown movies and TV series.
But as 2023 ends, the country’s TV and telecom regulator is at odds with American streamers over how much cash they are now obligated to fork over to subsidize local film, TV and music producers. During early December regulatory hearings in Gatineau, Quebec, top Canadian execs for Netflix, Apple Canada, Spotify and others bargained over setting a mandatory “initial base” contribution from U.S. digital giants to support local indie producers.
Those talks got hung up over still more hearings and negotiations set for next year to agree on a new definition on what does and doesn’t count as Canadian film or TV programming, or “Canadian content,” to modernize the country’s broadcast laws for the digital age. That new...

If Hollywood writers go on strike — a possibility as we close in on the May 1 deadline without a new deal between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) — the impact will be felt far beyond New York and Los Angeles. Around the world, producers and distribution companies, not to mention non-wga affiliated writers, are closely watching the ongoing negotiations, with an expectation that a WGA walkout could mean a boost in demand for new international content.
“As with previous WGA strikes, we’d expect there will be an increased demand for content from outside the U.S., particularly from English-speaking countries like the U.K. and Australia,” says Martin Moszkowicz and Oliver Berben of German mini-major Constantin Film, producers of the English-language Resident Evil horror franchise as well as German films and series including We Children From Bahnhof Zoo, which streams on Amazon,...

With Christmas in full swing on the Hallmark networks, beautiful holiday movies are coming in hot and heavy.
Long Lost Christmas stars Taylor Cole and Benjamin Ayres in a story reminding us that this Christmas could be our last with anyone we love.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Ben to talk about the movie and a whole lot more.
You don't have to be watching Hallmark to get your fill of Benjamin Ayres. This year alone, he's been in several Hallmark productions, Family Law on The CW, The Bad Seed Returns on Lifetime, and The Kids in the Hall.
Ben says that while Hallmark operates in the vein of old Hollywood's studio system, for other roles, he's going through the audition process.
With Hallmark, "You just get a phone call, and you're matched up with somebody else. The first inquiry is 'Who wrote it?' 'Who's starring in it?...

If you’ve ever been aboard an international flight, you know just how crowded those things can get. So naturally, the “Manifest” cast is pretty huge. First released on NBC and now streaming on Netflix, the record-breaking show follows the passengers of a plane that disappears mid-flight and lands five years later without explanation, or anyone on board noticing something was wrong.
But once they land, the Flight 828 passengers find their lives forever changed — and forever connected — through a series of visions dubbed “Callings,” which drive the 828ers to solve crimes, uncover mysteries and continually reunite thanks to the influences of a force they never fully understand.
“Manifest” just returned with the first half of a super-sized 20-episode fourth and final season, and as the series starts to pay off the promise that “it’s all connected,” many of the 828 passengers make their return, along with some new faces — or in Cal’s case,...

As much as we try to pretend it's not, television recasting is almost always a big deal. When stage performers get recast in a play, or characters get written out between movie sequels, it's bearable because these types of stories have a natural end point that helps audiences feel some closure about the character who's gone. Yet for TV shows, which encourage binge-watching that blurs the lines between seasons, the change can be jarring and distracting.
The spectrum of effective recasts isn't so much from terrible to great as it is from wildly noticeable to slightly unobtrusive. Whether it's the sudden appearance of scruffy, brown-eyed Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones," the revolving door of Bobby Drapers on "Mad Men," or the depressing Aunt Viv switch-up on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," recasts usually leave something to be desired.

If seasons one and two of Virgin River left you wanting more drama and romance, you're in luck, because season three is returning this summer on July 9. There were previously reports that the production of season three was already under way, but Netflix didn't confirm the show's pickup until Dec. 18. Starring Alexandra Breckenridge, the third season will include 10 new episodes, as well as two new additions to the cast: The Flash's Zibby Allen and Saving Hope's Stacey Farber. Allen is hopping on board as a new series regular, while Farber will have a recurring role.
If you haven't hopped on the Virgin River bandwagon yet, now is the perfect time to do so. Based on the Virgin River novels by Robyn Carr, the show chronicles Melinda "Mel" Monroe's (Breckenridge) move from bustling Los Angeles to the quaint town of Virgin River, located in suburban Northern California. Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.
Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

U.S. broadcast networks are acquiring and planning to acquire international series on a scale not seen since the 2007/08 Writers’ Strike.
The Covid-19 global pandemic has provided a boon for global distributors, many of which have long struggled to sell content to the likes of ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW.
This week, we have seen The CW pick up British comedy series Dead Pixels, produced by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong’s production company Various Artists, and Canadian procedural The Coroner and NBC has bought Canadian medical drama Transplant.
Deadline has spoken to a number of international sales execs, who are seeing unprecedented demand for English-language shows that could help plug gaps caused by the production shutdown. We have also highlighted a number of titles, finished and in the can, that may travel to the States.

Hulu series Utopia Falls takes a future-set sci-fi premise and injects with a pop culture explosion of music and dance.
Utopia Falls may, upon first glance, seem like an aesthetically clinical future-society-type story, but the Hulu sci-fi series is set to showcase its hybrid genre nature as a paean to the arts, specifically the entirety of a forbidden pop culture of the past. – Let’s just call it Logan’s Run meets Fame.

Erica Durance is joining her Smallville co-star Tom Welling in the CW’s upcoming DC Arrowverse crossover. She will be reprising her role as Lois Lane in multiple episodes of the five-night event.
