Not good..! 😭
Tejas_Vinda_AITS29 October 2018
The chemistry between Nargis and Rajkummar is unconvincing. While easily Rajkummar pulls off his role as a cop who is torn between his love and his work, Nargis doesn't bring much to the table. The music is typical Punjabi pop mixed with some folk, but doesn't add much value. The film tries to juggle the entertaining angle with a social cause which doesn't work.

With a guessable plot and a meandering story line, attending these '5 weddings' proves to be a daunting task.

I don't know why an actor like Rajkumar even wanted to be in such kind of movie. Worst movie of Rajkumar till date. Poor story and the worst direction. I literally dozed off while watching this one.

Give it a miss unless there's nothing else to watch
mosquitocyn14 June 2023
Firstly the female lead's acting is not good. Quite exaggerated acting and predictable script too. There's no surprises and plenty of cliches. The male lead did much better. But the storyline is not convincing. There's no depth. The ending seems very rushed and totally unbelievable. At least the cast look good, the costumes, weddings are colorful and pretty. The cinematography is good and picture shots are interesting. If there's nothing to else you want to watch that's available, I guess this movie is bearable with much forwarding which was exactly what I did after not being able to tolerate the bad script.

Horrible acting and dialogue delivery

Terrible film!!! Acting doesn't even deserve a star. I had better expectations from the main actors. The only good parts were the story about her father and the hijras.

Warning: Spoilers
Witing something about this movie wastes another 2 mins of my precious time. But I am doing so to save your precious 2 hrs , your expenditure for entertainment and the torture you will go through while watching this. I am really sorry Ms. Namata Singh Gujral, I didn't want to be so blunt but....and I do appreciate your concern for society you recorded in your voice. All the best for next one!!

It's a boring and idiotic Movie
ragesh1928 October 2018
From starting it's a idiotic and boring one, you can't handle her movie even for half an hour. The acting and direction is very poor. Don't waste time in even watching it on Netflix.

Loved the story of Hijras...
asst-9675724 November 2018
So my previous review got deleted? Anyways thank you to the filmmakers for educating me abt Hijras. I watched the film with an Indian co-worker who likes the lead actress. But then she is upset because (according to her) Hijras are not treated badly in India! So I google this last night and find some very sad stories about the treatment of transgenders in India! Its 2018 - lets get with the game, be more humane and progressive minded. LOVED the Hijra lady Shamala in the film. Please recommend more films on Hijras.

Saw this with another couple and really enjoyed it. My first real exposure to Indian cinema and I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but we were entertained.

One-Line Review: 5 Weddings (2 Stars)
nairtejas9 August 2019
5 Weddings is the perfect example of how bad filmmaking, bad concept, and an overall bad execution can eventually result in a messy, half-baked romantic drama about a PIO American landing in India to cover a bunch of weddings. TN.

Don't even bother
nazmobile9 May 2020
This is probably the worst crossover film I've ever seen, and I am pretty forgiving given the number of Bollywood films I watch and the duds that come out of there on a constant basis.

This is amateur directing and acting at its best, it's got cliched scenes and dialogues which have you cringing and shaking your head.

It's a shame because it could have been something decent but unfortunately the acting, the script and directing let's it down.

Don't bother watched it, save your time and pick something else

Cute, Fun w/ lots of weddings, transgenders and an interweave of all things Indian!
Bollywood-Fan-126 July 2019
Film is more for Goras than Desis. Desis will probably find it super vanilla but Goras will love it. Me personally, I liked it a lot.

Raj always good, Nargis the real wild card who gives a fab performance. The driver - OMG - so freakin funny. If you liked The Big Sick - WATCH THIS!

5 weddings deserves 1 star
sauravjoshi8518 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
5 weddings is a story of an American journalist who travels to India to cover Indian weddings for a magazine she is working for and aspire to become editor in chief.

The content of the movie was good and a great movie could've been with such a beautiful content but is ruined by foolish anticipation. The main shock was that there was only one wedding is shown and rest are different different rituals like Mehandi and Ladies Sangeet which are few of the rituals of a wedding. There are some foolish sequences in the movie like playing Holi (Indian Festival of colours) out of the airport and this is strictly prohibited as airports are one of the very high secured area, secondly on the way to airport you will find people on roads without colour considering it's a Holi Festival, although this is a small detail but very important detail as Holi is one of the biggest festival of India. It seems that the director was not sure how to progress as the movie looses it's plot completely after 15 minutes of it's start and after riding on the unnecessary inclusion of Hindu muslim love story and rights of transgenders reaches to climax which is very predictable and abrupt.

As far as acting is concerned Nargis Fakhri was pathetic, Rajkumar Rai is one of the most talented actor but is completely wasted in the movie. The support cast has done the worst possible acting.

Overall a pathetic and boring movie which is just waste of time.

A commonplace movie
Abdulxoxo30 December 2020
What a tad boring movie, it took me almost three years ohhh I mean days to finish watching this hard-to-sit-through movie. The problem is not the run-time, no no it's actually got a friendly runtime, it's the poorly written characters and bland storytelling. To make matter worse, my version of the film is dubbed, pooorly dubbed that occasionally makes me want to punch my laptop screen. The story follows a biracial lady Shania who is working in an online company, with their boss retiring, she assigned them to dig deep and find stories that's going to make the company blow out the water. Her boss suggested she goes to India and write stories about the culture and also a way to reconnect with her roots since she's of Indian descent. Meanwhile, In Indian a police officer Harbhajan is not happy with his duty patrol, and is assigned as to Shania so that he could keep her in check. They started visiting weddings after weddings (hence the film's title 5 weddings), all while developing feelings for each other. She encounters a group of transgenders and sympathise with them because of the way they're being treated. she decided to write about it and post it online, but the Indian authority is against that, and makes Harbhajan steals her laptop and therefore creating a rift between them. After a brief fight, she goes to the authority herself and gives up all her research but for some reason only known to the director and the writers, she's forgiven and all her things are given back to her. She posts them online, and marries Harbhajan and they live happily ever after, if there's such a thing.

The plot confuses itself, it started quite different but totally loses its way in the second act, and the final act is very predictable. The heroine played Margie Fakhri is my main problem, I don't particularly find her likable, infact she's quite annoying. There's an attempt to flesh out her character with some lackluster flashbacks but falls flat. Police officer Harbhajan played by Rajkummar Rao, I was surprised he take part in this movie, 'cause it seems a little bit below his pay grade, no? Anyways, his performance is quite decent but not a fan of his character either. The rest of cast are okay. The movie just looks depressingly low-budgeted, the cinematography is barely average, music is nothing to talk about. But I admire the filmmakers courage for the message they are trying to pass to the general public.

Warning: Spoilers
5 Weddings Filmmakers: thank you for educating me. The world needs more progressive thinking in 2018. Went to the film with an Indian co-worker who was upset that India was shown in a negative light with the portrayal of transgender people in India. Upon research, the articles are everywhere... I am aghast - LOVED the film and wld like more recommendations on Hijra films! (Cld not find any)

Rajkummar, Just his acting
faisalfaves24 October 2018
This man is perfect, I mean he can do any type of acting. He is brilliant. Bollywood is changing and going up, Thanks to these actors, all credit goes to them, actors like Nawazuddin, Irrfan, Manoj, Naseeruddin, Paresh, Kamal, Govinda, Asrani, Vijay Raaz, and there are more. They act well and in the end people appreciate the mean lead role. I respect these actors a lot!

Loved the film - but its not really Bollywood?
paulabrandle3 November 2018
I have seen Bollywood films and love Priyanka Shopra. Really adored this film especially the angle with the Hijeeras - did not know anything about them - and its shocking how transgenders are treated in some parts of the world.

I went for this film because I read that it got banned in several countries because of the transgender characters. What I found was a beautiful film - some comedy, some drama - along the lines of The Big Sick or 100 Foot Journey (both of which I love). If you are a fan of either of those, do catch this one - but not for a Bollywood treat. I also loved the lead actress and will add her to my list of faves.

A Beautiful Mess Of A Movie
TharsheyN25 February 2023
5 Weddings is the story about a half white, half Indian journalist who returns to India for a piece she is writing on Indian weddings and wedding ceremonies.

However things aren't all simple as her parents had split when she was just 6 years old and she hadn't seen her father since even though he tried to keep in contact but her mother didn't let him. So now years later her mother gives her a package with family photos to give to her father in India that he had been requesting for a long time and who she has finally forgiven. Shania's father, her stance on love and her piece on weddings form the crux of the story. The story however is weak, it's not well done and it does the film a gross injustice. The movie is 1h 30m and it's just not enough to do justice to the film.

The story arc of Shania and her dad is interesting but ultimately unrewarding, it allows some emotional scenes but could have been so much better. Unfortunately the film tried to fit to much into to short a time frame and each story arc feels rushed and not fleshed out.

Shania's views on love is put to the test when she meets her liaison officer Harbhajan Singh and starts to fall for him. Unfortunately this arc as well doesn't get enough meat to it and is not fleshed out. We have them meeting, they go to a few weddings for her writing piece but soon she is leaving and they end up declaring their love for one another while juggling the drama currently happening in the film. Again another good story arc that just feels super rushed, like it's on 16x speed. If they had made this film 2h30m to 3h in length, they would have had enough screen time to do justice to the romantic story arc between Shania and Harbhajan as well as the relationship between Shania and her father and the package she was meant to deliver to him.

Casting wise I won't complain, Shania Dhaliwal is played by the beautiful Nargis Fakhri who gives us a good performance in the movie. However it's not a great performance and her character is sorely lacking in development and comes across as a "modern American" girl whose sleeping with her assistant to a girl whose suddenly realized love and marriage is actually maybe important before you go and start sleeping with someone. That being said I don't blame the actress, she does the best she can with the story and script she is given. The fault on her character being kinda boring and going from A to Z is purely on the poor, rushed storyline and script. So props to Nargis for doing a good job with limited material. Harbhajan Singh is played by Rajkummar Rao and he does a absolutely amazing job playing the cop who also falls in love with the girl (though unfortunately she has already been sleeping around with her assistant so she is second hand goods, F) and has to pick between trying to do what he thinks is right and orders from his superior. His character not being the main character or having as many story lines revolving around him, allow him to shine even with the lack luster script; something that Nargis's character Shania unfortunately cannot do without more substance and a better script.

Song wise, I don't really know what to say. There was no title of feature songs; in fact the only songs/music that is played is during the 5 weddings that Shania and Harbhajan attend.

To wrap things up let me summarize this review; The story was frankly disappointing, it had so much potential but was to rushed and had no substance to each story arc it contained. The casting was good, Rajkummar Rao shines in his role as Harbhajan Singh while Nargis Fakhri is certainly eye candy and does the best she can in her role as Shania Dhaliwal. Unfortunately she is limited and dragged down by the weak story and short runtime and is not allowed to shine. The music is alright but nothing great, you may not even notice it to be honest. I give 5 weddings a 7/10 for a few reasons, The story had potential and was still interesting to me in it's current state though the movie loses all 3 stars here. I give the movie 3 stars for Rajkummar Rao and another 3 for Nargis Fakhri both who did good jobs with what they had. The final star the movie gets is because I still enjoyed it even in its current state. Though it may be a while before I decided to ever give it a rewatch.

P. S. If the guy had been sleeping around he would also be second hand goods. No double standard here xD.

REVIEW 5 Weddings
Magow-Intermean14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Shanaya Singh (Nargis Fakhri) is not a fan of Indian weddings, India as a place or her father. But life deals her a difficult hand where she has to fly to Chandigarh to cover not one, but five weddings if she wants the top job at her fashion magazine. To add to her dilemma, her mother asks her to track her father, who left them when Shanaya was a little girl, and deliver a parcel to him. Like a good reporter and a dutiful daughter, she bites the bullet and flies to India where she bumps into Harbhajan Singh (Rajkummar Rao), a police officer assigned to liaison with her and stops her if she steps out of line and files a negative story. It may be tough to step out of line covering weddings for a fashion magazine, but Shanaya happens to chance upon the sorry way that transgender or Hijras are treated in India and decides to write a critical piece on it.

It would have worked out better had the filmmaker focused on one Indian wedding instead of five because the numbers don't add a lot to the plot besides one or two incidents. Shanaya embeds herself very loosely with the weddings which make the story seems less believable. She is also not shown spending much time with the transgender community to get any credible story which she is shown writing.
