- Tyrion arrives at King's Landing to take his father's place as Hand of the King. Stannis Baratheon plans to take the Iron Throne for his own. Robb tries to decide his next move in the war. The Night's Watch arrive at the house of Craster.

- Tyrion arrives in King's Landing with news that he is to be acting as the King's hand until his father returns. The news doesn't sit well with Cersei, King Joffrey's mother. Tyrion makes a point of telling her just how badly she has handled the situation of Ned Stark's execution and Arya Stark's escape. Rumors abound that Cersei's children are the product of an incestuous relationship with her brother Jaime. Even King Joffrey has heard them and challenges his mother to tell the truth but she denies it. Soon, the King's guards are seeking out and killing all of the late King Robert's illegitimate children. One, Gendry the armorer's apprentice, seems to have made his escape. In Winterfell, Bran continues to have his dreams and is told that the red comet in the sky means only one thing: dragons. Daenerys and her small group of followers are in a seemingly endless desert. She sends riders in all directions to see what they can find. The Night's Watch has ventured beyond the wall and learn that the King who lives north of the wall is amassing an army. The dead King Robert's brother Stannis Baratheon prepares for war but sees all others as his enemies. Summer is coming to an end and everyone is preparing for a winter of unknown duration.—garykmcd
- The Lord Commander Mormont is tracking down Benjen Stark with the Night's Watch. Tyrion arrives in King's Landing to assume his position of Hand of the King making Cersei furious and he strikes back telling that she allowed the execution of Ned and the escape of Arya. Stannis has received the letter sent by Ned to him telling that he should be the heir of the throne and he sends copies of the letter to all Lords in the realm claiming that he is the legitimate successor. Cersei forces Littlefinger to find Arya threatening his life. Joffrey orders a massacre of Robert's bastards in King's Landing. - Tyrion arrives to save Joffrey's crown from threats old and new; Daenerys searches for allies and water in the Red Waste; Jon Snow and the Night's Watch face the wilderness beyond the Wall; on the island of Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon plots an invasion to claim his late brother's throne, allying himself with the fiery Melisandre.
- Joffrey is busy being a cruel king. He eliminates anyone who displeases him. Sansa is horrified by his behavior, but cannot push back on him in any circumstance. Sansa saves Sir Dontos from Joffrey's wrath, by convincing him to appoint Dontos as the new fool.
To Cersei's (Lena Headey) dismay, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) takes up his post as acting Hand at King's Landing. Tyrion yells at Cersei for doing nothing while Joffrey killed Ned and for allowing Arya to escape through her fingers. The Lannisters had 3 Starks to trade and now only have Sansa. Tyrion tells Cersei that Tywin will be furious with her. Tyrion has brought Shae (Sibel Kekilli) for his company to the King's Landing. Cersei orders Petyr (Aidan Gillen) to find Arya. Petyr tries to blackmail Cersei about her relationship with Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), but Cersei subdues him by threatening to kill him. Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) rules Winterfell in Robb absence with the help of his council. He travels farther and farther away from Winterfell with Hodor and Osha, following the trail of the raven and other animals who guide him in his dreams. Osha sees a comet in the sky and remarks that dragons are coming.
At Dragonstone, Stannis (Stephen Dillane) proclaims allegiance to Melisandre's (Carice van Houten) new god, lays public claim to the Iron Throne, and reveals Joffrey's bastardy to all corners of the realm. Stannis is advised against this course of action by his advisers Davos Matthos Seaworth (Kerr Logan), and Maester Cressen (Oliver Ford Davies). But Maester Cressen is poisoned by Melisandre for resisting her ambition to usher in her new Gods. Ser Davos is loyal to Stannis and is a reformed smuggler who used to ply the narrow sea. Davos wants Stannis to make peace with Renly, to fight the Lannisters, but Stannis refuses. If not Renly, then Davos asks to align with Robb Stark, but Stannis considers him a thief of the Northen half of his kingdom.
As the secret is out, that Joffrey is not Robert's son, Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) orders the soldiers to slaughter Robert's bastards, one of whom, named Gendry (Joe Dempsie),is with Arya (Maisie Williams) on the way to the North wall. Joffrey's guards learn this fact that Gendry is on the way to the North wall. Cersei slaps Joffrey, when he is rude to her by asking how many bastards did Robert sire after he grew tired of her. Joffery warns Cersei not to raise hands on him again, on the pain of death. One of Petyr's whores Daisy (Maisie Dee) (Ros's colleague) rises through the whorehouse ranks to becomes the madame of the establishment.
Having won three victories, Robb (Richard Madden) offers the Lannisters peace in exchange for the North's independence and Sansa's (Sophie Turner) return. Robb knows that he wont defeat the Lannisters till he takes King's Landing. He doesn't have enough troops or even ships for that. He sends Theon (Alfie Allen) to gain the support of Balon Greyjoy (Patrick Malahide), his father (Robb was hesitant to do that as Balon had fought against the Starks and Baratheons in the past, as his rebellion against King Robert's rule), and Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) to seek alliance with Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony), who also claims the throne and has raised an army of 100,000. Catelyn does not trust Balon Greyjoy, but Robb knows he has no choice.
Beyond the Wall, the Night's Watch finds shelter with Craster (Robert Pugh) and his daughters/wives. Craster has sex with his own daughters and inbreeds heavily. Craster is the only wild-ling left for a hundred leagues in any direction. The Lord Commander Joer Mormont (James Cosmo) speaks to Caster who tells him that an army is being assembled north of the wall. The army was led by Mance Rayder. Once a Night's watch, who abandoned his oath and now is the King Beyond the wall.
In Essos, as her people slowly die in the Red Waste, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) sends out riders to conduct reconnaissance for cities, rivers or lakes or the great ocean. The 3 dragons consider Daenerys her mother. Jorah advises Daenerys to stay on course as this the only way to avoid the other warring tribes who will kill her and take her dragons.
