A somewhat flummoxed John Godfrey took a grilling from .mystery. interviewer Tony Jackson during the session .Sbs in the Spotlight. held at Net-Work-Play on Tuesday. Godfrey, Head of Documentary at Sbs, opened the session stating .We had a few complaints last year from producers saying that we give the same presentation every year and that our message is always the same. .Tony was one of those who complained the loudest. So, basically, I said .Alright, you interview us, you make it fun. So if this is really tedious you know who to blame... Jackson was listed as a mystery interviewer in the Aidc program. Having worked in factual television for 25 years and now with his own company, Chemical Media Productions, Jackson took the opportunity to ask Godfrey and members of the Sbs commissioning team some hard-hitting questions, as well as accuse Godfrey of being allergic to anything he or his company pitched.

A qualitative research study commissioned by Screen Australia affirms the importance of Australian screen culture but pays scant attention to the issue of why cinemagoers rarely see local films.
The Ipsos Australia report, Hearts & Minds, affirms that Australians believe that a strong local film and television industry producing high-quality content is essential to their sense of culture and identity.
The study found the heavily promoted Hollywood films have a strong advantage in attracting cinemagoers but said Australians will go to see a local film if it has buzz and strong word-of-mouth. Reflecting their box-office results, Australia, Red Dog and The Sapphires were the most often cited examples.
The focus group research indicated Australian films were easy to miss at the cinema because of very short runs, with one respondent quoting recent misfires Save Your Legs! and Blinder. That.s a chicken-and- egg argument because those films wouldn.t have been...

Sbs is relaunching Sbs 2 in April as a youth-oriented, multi-platform channel.
It is the first rebrand since the channel (then called Sbs Two) was launched in June 2009. Working under severe budget-constraints, it broadcast (and re-broadcast) a similar mix of main channel content including world film, drama, documentaries, international news and sport. However, Sbs finally received a major funding boost from the government in 2012 allowing chief executive Michael Ebeid to begin a process to revitalise the public broadcaster..
Sbs 2 now plans to focus on audiences aged 16-39 with a passion for emerging cultural ideas and experiences. Its content will include the channel.s first commissioned program - a 15-minute daily news and current affairs program - and dedicated sport programming.
It will also launch "Back 2 Back" episode viewing - where viewers get to watch an entire series of selected new programs via Sbs On Demand before broadcast on Sbs 2.

No other show on the box this year came close to matching the overall performance across the series with most episodes hovering around the 2m viewer mark.
2. Puberty Blues
Ten may have had a year to forget but one shining light in the network’s line-up was Southern Star-produced drama Puberty Blues. Whether it was the story, based on the 1970s novel of the same name, the performance of the cast or attention to detail that made this show a hit, it consistently delivered around one million views.

"Mark, you would know about that"
An awkward exchange during a Ten News bulletin has become the first piece of video content uploaded by an Australian TV network to receive more than 10m views on YouTube.

Aiston remarked at the end of the sports roundup about The Ashes trophy: “I just can’t understand how something so small could be so impressive.”
Heggen deadpanned: “Well Mark, you would know about that.”

From advertising campaigns to online video series, the term ‘transmedia’ gets quite the work out. But what does it actually mean? Cathie McGinn trawls the media landscape for a definitive definition.
Transmedia, all media and multiplatform are terms often used interchangeably when referencing modern storytelling techniques. Yet, depending who you speak to, there are distinct differences between them.
According to industry experts Encore spoke to, the key elements that define transmedia can be summarised as follows: platform, time, audience, adaptation, and creative collaboration.
“Transmedia projects involve the use of more than one medium to tell multiple stories from the same story world,” says Christy Dena, author of the first PhD on transmedia practice. But the main differentiation between transmedia and multiplatform is whether the content is adapted for each platform or simply syndicated. Each storytelling element must be shaped for individual platforms, operating independently but contributing to a richer experience of the whole.

Loving the underdog is what Aussies are all about, and this was proved again last night at the 54th Annual Logies Awards Ceremony held at Crown Palladium in Melbourne.
Despite Carrie Bickmore of Channel 10.s highly successful The Project being the favourite to take out the major gong, the Gold Logie for most popular personality on TV went instead to comedian Hamish Blake of Hamish and Andy.s Gap Year.
In a minor controversy leading up to this unexpected win, while testing its new IPad application the Herald Sun experienced a technical glitch, leading to the publishing of a link to an embargoed press release containing Logies winners an hour prior to the Gold Logie being officially announced during Channel Nine.s coverage.
The link was killed immediately, but not before Google picked it up. In the split second it was available, lucky net-trawlers picked it up and leaked it onto Facebook and Twitter,...

Nine comedian Hamish Blake has won the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality at the 54th TV Week Logie Awards.
However, public broadcaster the ABC won the most awards, followed by Nine, Seven and Ten.
Blake pipped fellow nominees Adam Hills, Asher Keddie, Karl Stevanovic, Carrie Bickmore and Esther Anderson to the top gong.
Blake’s win was leaked online by The Herald Sun about an hour before the presentation of the Gold Logie and was a spoiler for the room. However Ten’s Breakfast reports Blake maintained he didn’t know before the announcement was made.
Across the networks, the ABC came out on top with six and a shared award – the shared coming from Asher Keddie’s Most Popular Actress win for her work in both the ABC’s Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo and Ten’s Offspring.

Michael Cordell, executive producer of production company Cordell Jigsaw, has hit back at a Daily Telegraph article that accused the production company of not paying key cast of an observational documentary.
Cordell was accused of not paying the 33 individual lifeguards that appear on his show Bondi Rescue, now in its seventh season on Ten, despite the production being a documentary and doing so would create a conflict of interest within the production.
Cordell said in a statement: “We have huge respect for the boys down at Bondi and weʼve made every effort to ensure theyʼre part of Bondi Rescueʼs success.”
“It would be a conflict of interest to actually employ the lifeguards to appear in the series. Nor would Waverley Council ever permit it. However, there are very concrete agreements in place that benefit both the Council and the lifeguards.”

BBC America will adapt Cordell Jigsaw's documentary series Go Back To Where You Came From.
It marks the first time Sbs has signed a deal with a major Us broadcaster.
"It's rare for a televiison format to be able to break new ground using an issue that's a political hot button worldwide," said Sbs managing director Michael Ebeid. "The high level of interest from both international broadcasters and production companies is testament to the compelling nature of the format."
The series, which aired last year during Refugee Week, followed six people as they experienced situations faced by real asylum seekers on a daily basis, including travelling in a leaky boat and living in a refugee camp. It was Sbs's highest rating program last year.
Production companies and broadcasters in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and South Africa have also signed on to produce local versions of the show.

The Sbs and production company Cordell Jigsaw Productions format Go Back To Where You Came From has found a market in the Us.
The deal with BBC America marks the first format agreement for Sbs Australia with a Us broadcaster.
The agreement follows sales of the format to Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and South Africa.
Michael Cordell of Cordell Jigsaw said: “Go Back proved important issues don’t have to be dull television. We’re proud the series became part of the national debate on asylum seekers and is now on its way to becoming part of the international debate. We’re also cock-a-hoop about the format sales. Instead of being a dumping ground for overseas formats, for once, an Australian format is being exported to the rest of the world. Hopefully it will help balance our cultural terms of trade.”

Screen Australia says the value of documentary production hit a record high last financial year, underpinned by a greater number of more expensive series.
Screen Australia chief executive Ruth Harley told the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) this week that 430 hours of Australian documentary projects were made in 2010-11, totalling $133 million of expenditure, which was above the $118 million five-year average.
.What we can clearly see is that the Producer Offset has been effective in buoying the industry and driving growth in the documentary sector," she said.
"Prior to the introduction of the Producer Offset in 2007, the annual five-year average for documentary production was $77 million and now we.re almost doubling that figure. The record budget level driven by more hours of high-production value series of programs above $250,000 per hour shows that the Offset is also driving an increase in premium content..
