- Harry Venn: I broke up with Frances today.
- Lauren: What, again?
- Harry Venn: No, it's for good this time.
- Lauren: I'm sorry. She seemed like a nice girl. Don't know what she was doing with you.
- Harry Venn: What were you doing with me?
- Lauren: I'm not as nice as her.
- Harry Venn: I should warn you, the coffee's terrible.
- Gina Hawkes: [sips her coffee] I've drunk worse.
- Harry Venn: You're a brave woman. What can I do for you?
- Gina Hawkes: I have a client.
- [gives Harry her business card]
- Gina Hawkes: He's on a murder charge.
- Harry Venn: [reading the card] You're a lawyer? Interesting case?
- Gina Hawkes: It has a couple of unusual features, the first being that my client appears to be innocent.
- Harry Venn: What, you mean, really innocent?
- Gina Hawkes: As in, he didn't do it.
- Harry Venn: Now that is unusual.
- Harry Venn: Listen, don't worry. Worst case, you'll get five years.
- [pauses]
- Harry Venn: I'm kidding. They'll give you a rap on the knuckles. Why'd you do it? Michael?
- Michael Venn: Who are you?
- Harry Venn: I'm your father.
- Michael Venn: No, my father left.
- James Morpeth: Ah, here he is. The man of the hour.
- Alexander Wentworth: Sorry I'm late.
- James Morpeth: [shaking his hand] Alex.
- Alexander Wentworth: Protestors again.
- [greeting Elspeth]
- Alexander Wentworth: It's impossible to get through central London.
- James Morpeth: Who'd have thought rioting in London would get to become practically a daily occurrence?
- Alexander Wentworth: Who indeed.
- Elspeth Verney: I thought you were marvelous on the Today program, Alex.
- James Morpeth: Yes, congratulations, you were terrific. They're always horribly snide, but I thought by the end, you'd won them over.
- Alexander Wentworth: Thank you, James.
- Elspeth Verney: That's because you're principled and because you have integrity.
- James Morpeth: Something friend Worsley could do with.
- Elspeth Verney: I think it's a bit too late for that, don't you?
- Strand Bellboy: [yawns] Excuse me.
- Harry Venn: Long hours?
- Strand Bellboy: [nodding] Yeah, very long.
- Harry Venn: Hm. Mind you, I bet they pay you a fortune.
- Strand Bellboy: Yeah. You English. Make funny jokes that are not so funny.
- Harry Venn: True.
