Le Pacte has picked up sales on Benoit Delépine and Gustave Kervern’s latest collaboration Saint Amour, starring Gérard Depardieu and Benoît Poelvoorde as a farmer and his son who bond and find love on an eventful wine tour.
Delépine and Kervern last worked with Depardieu on their 2010 comic road movie Mammuth, which premiered in Berlin, was a breakout arthouse hit in France and sold well internationally.
Poelvoorde is a frequent collaborator with Delépine and Kervern, starring most recently as middle-aged punk in Le Grand Soir – which won Un Certain Regard’s Grand Jury Prize in 2012.

Venice -- The no-budget, fascinating-as-a-trainwreck feature Near Death Experience, from eccentric French directorial duo Gustave Kervern and Benoit Delepine (Le Grand Soir, Mammuth), stars French literary giant Michel Houellebecq as an absolutely average and totally burnt-out employee of a call center who’s driven to suicide. This intimate psychological drama is set in the great outdoors, as it follows the protagonist into the mountains where he might end it all. A one-man-show for practically its entire running time, Nde, as it’s also being called, manages to stay dramatically grounded despite its possibly pretentious casting choice

Col*Coa is winding down, but you can still catch a few stellar films and see the award winners for free Monday, April 22, 2013.
Award Screenings at 6:00 pm: The evening will start with the rerun of two awarded films in the Renoir and Truffaut Theaters at the DGA. Films will be announced on Sunday April 21 on the Col*Coa website, on Facebook, Twitter and on the Col•Coa info line (310) 289 5346. Free admission on a First comes First Served basis. No RSVP needed.
You can stay and also see the Closing Night Films at 8:30 pm at the DGA. Reservations needed. Those are both North American Premieres of two very anticipated French films. The thriller Moebus by Eric Rochant will show for free as will the comedy Like Brothers by Hugo Gélin.
Being among the French filmmakers (and I saw way too few of the films) gave me such a surprising sense of renewal - again because of this upcoming generation. After seeing City of Lights, the short by Pascal Tessaud which preceded the classic Jacques Demy film Bay of Angels starring a platinum blond gambling-addicted Jeanne Moreau in Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo in 1963, we spoke at length about what is called "The New Vibe". City of Lights stars a deeply quiet young man from "les banlieus", the notorious "suburbs" surrounding Paris where the international mix of young (and old) proletariat population is invisible to the rest of France except when the anger erupts into riots. This first generation has the French education but not the money or jobs and it hurts. They have picked up the cameras and with no money are creating films which express their lives in many ways like the new Latin American filmmakers or the new Eastern European filmmakers. Tessaud gave me an entire education in the hour we talked and I will share this in time. For now, aside from his wonderfuly trenchant film which played like a feature, which captured the Paris this young generation recognizes as The City of Lights - dancing, the kitchen of a very upscale restaurant, the dreary streets filled with construction, there is another example of The New Vibe, started by Rachid Djaïdani (a story in himself) the film Hold Back (Rengaine) leads the pack of the 20-some-odd new films of The New Vibe. It is produced by Anne-Dominque Toussaint (Les Films des Tournelles) whose films are too numerous to name but include my favorite The Hedgehog which I wrote about at Col*Coa two years ago, Col*Coa's current Cycling with Moliere, 2002's Respiro and many many others. Hold Back took 9 years to make and most of the team was unpaid. The New Vibe makes films without the aid of the French system of funding; it is more guerilla-style, not New Wave, not Dogma but New Vibe. Hold Back took Cannes by storm when it showed last year in Directors Fortnight and went on to New Directors/ New Films in New York. The classic story of a Catholic and a Muslim who want to marry but whose family objects, this rendition the Juliet has a brother who marches throughout Paris to alert her 39 other brothers that she wants to marry outside her cultural and religious traditions. "This fresh debut mixes fable, plucky social commentary - particularly about France's Arab community - and inventive comic setpieces" (Col*Coa)
Hold Back (Rengaine) (Isa: Pathe) goes beyond the funny but "establishmant" film Intouchable which played here last year. It is the exact opposite of such films as Sister or even Aliyah (Isa: Rezo) which played here this year and also in Directors Fortnight last year. Aliyah is about a young French Jewish man who must make his last drug sale in order to escape his brother's destructive behavior. He escapes by immigrating to Israel. These films are made by filmmakers within the French establishment and describe a proletariat existence which exists in their bourgeois minds. They lack a certain "verite" which can only be captured by one who knows viscerally what such marginal existence is.
At the opposite end of the contemporary spectrum of films today, a real establishment film is You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Alain Renais (you have to be a Renais fan to love it who was so avant-garde in his day). Those old New Wave films one could see here stand out in beautiful contrast to today's New Vibe: Renais' Stavisky or the 1963 film The Fire Within (Le feu follet) by Louis Malle again starring the beautiful Jeanne Moreau. I missed them both to my regret. When I miss a film I always tell myself I can see it when it's released or on DVD or Mubi, but rarely do I get to see it. Instead I can only read about it as here written up by Beth Hanna on Indiewire blog ToH. The Fire Within was part of Wes Anderson's choices, one of the various showcases of Col*Coa. Says Hanna: "Anderson's taste is impeccable: He has selected Louis Malle's 1963 lyrical depression drama The Fire Within." It was made after the classic Elevator to the Gallows (1958) which Miles Davis scored and which also starred the young Jeanne Moreau. She also could be seen her in Col*Coa in the classic 1963 Jacques Demy-directed Bay of Angels.
Col*Coa really offered something for everyone this year. Another of my favorite film genres, the Jewish film, was represented by Aliyah and The Dandelions (Du Vent dans mes mollets) (Isa: Gaumont), Stavisky, and It Happened in St. Tropez (Isa: Pathe), a classic French comedy -- though a bit dark and yet still comedic, about romance, love and marriage switching between generations in a neurotic, comfortably wealthy Jewish family. The Dandelions was, according to my friend Debra Levine, a writer on culture including film and dance, (see her blog artsmeme), "darling, so touching, so well made, so creative ... i really liked it. Went into that rabbit hole of little girls together ... Barbie doll play. Crazy creative play. As looney as kids can be."
Ian Birnie's favorite film was Becoming Traviata. Greg Katchel's favorite originally was Rendez-vous à Kiruna by Anna Novion, but when I saw him later in the festival his favorite was Cycling with Moliere (Alceste a bicyclette) (Isa: Pathe), again produced by Anne-Dominque Toussaint and directed by Philippe Le Guay who directed one of my favorites, The Women on the 6th Floor. Greg also liked Three Worlds though it was a bit "schematic" in depicting the clash of different cultures which were also shown in Hold Back.
Of the few films I was able to see, the most interesting was Augustine by Alice Winokur. It is the French response to David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and the British film Hysteria. All three were about the turn of the century concern of psychologists or doctors with female hysteria. This one concerned Jean-Martin Charcot and the neurologist's belief that hysteria was a neurological disease and he used hypnosis to get at its roots, whild in A Dangerous Method it was seen by Freud and Jung as a mental disorder and in Hysteria by Tanya Wexler (Tiff 2011) in which Dr. Mortimer Granville devises the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science.

Of the few films I was able to see, the most interesting was Augustine by Alice Winokur. It is the French response to David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and the British film Hysteria. All three were about the turn of the century concern of psychologists or doctors with female hysteria. This one concerned Jean-Martin Charcot and the neurologist's belief that hysteria was a neurological disease and he used hypnosis to get at its roots, whild in A Dangerous Method it was seen by Freud and Jung as a mental disorder and in Hysteria by Tanya Wexler (Tiff 2011) in which Dr. Mortimer Granville devises the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science.

The 17th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk) has announced its lineup. The festival will run from 7th to 14th December, 2012 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Some of the highlights of the lineup are festival favourites of the year Amour, Chitrangada, Samhita, The Sapphires, Drapchi, Miss Lovely, Me and You, Celluloid Man, and Baandhon.

The 61st Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) will screen its biggest selection of films straight from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

This year's Palm Dog Awards, honoring canines in film, thematically skews toward Rip (Rover in Peace) as three of its contestants were dramatically killed off on screen: Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt, Ben Wheatley's Sightseers. Begun in 2001 by Brit, Toby Rose, it is awarded to the best performance by a canine (live or animated) or group of canines during the Cannes Film Festival. The award consists of a leather dog collar with the term “Palm Dog". This year's winners are Banjo and Poppy in Sightseers. A special Jury Prize was given to Billy Bob in Le Grand Soir.

If you were hoping that an American entry would take home the big prize, the Palme d'Or much like last year's "The Tree of Life," hope again. The only American winner of the bunch was the Sundance darling, Benh Zeitlin's "Beast of the Southern Wild." Sunday was the last day of the Cannes Film Festival, but in the minds of festival-goers Saturday might have well as been the end. The overcrowded press room, where it has been impossible to find a seat all week, was eerily empty, and walking around the Croisette was no longer a traffic jam of people. I spent the morning sitting down with New York University graduate Matthew James Reilly, a short film director, who's film "Abigail," won second-prize from the Cinéfonation, a sidebar of the festival for student short films. Today the winners at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival were announced with Michael Haneke's accepting the Palme d'Or for his devastating new film, Amour, a story of an 80-something couple in which the wife is slowly dying and her husband tends to her during her final moments. Of the films predicted to win, Amour was at the top along with Leos Carax's Holy Motors and Jacques Audiard's Rust & Bone. Ironically enough, the latter two films went home empty-handed with a few surprise winners elsewhere. In the acting categories it was thought the performances of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva from Amour or the performances of Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts in Rust & Bone would be likely winners for the acting awards. No dice. Acting prizes went to a pair of divisive films, neither of which I saw, but both of which I heard exact opposite response from those that saw them.

The Special Jury prize went to Le Grand Soir by Benoît DELÉPINE and Gustave Kervern.

The Nice airport is getting a bit less busy, and the cafés and hotels on the Croisette are quieter as the Cannes Film Festival wraps up today. Awards are starting to be handed out and first up are the prizes for the festival's Un Certain Regard category, which tends to feature newer, lesser-known directors and slightly edgier fare than the main competition lineup.
The jury, presided over by Tim Roth (who also starred in the Critics' Week opening film "Broken"), has given the Prize Of Un Certain Regard to Mexico's "Después de Lucía." To be honest, we heard very little about this one on the grounds of the fest, but the film directed by Michael Franco follows a father and daughter who are starting their lives over in a new town. It’s only fair for me to say that Despues de Lucia by Michel Franco, which I did not see, must be one extremely good film. Why? Because it beat Brandon Cronenberg revolting, well-made Antiviral and Benh Zeitlin‘s phenomenal Beasts of the Southern Wild in for the Un Certain Regard prize. Michel Franco's "Despues de Lucia" led the winners of the Un Certain Regard section of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, taking its top prize. Other major winners included Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kervern's "Le Grand Soir," which won the special jury prize. 10.47am: Good morning and welcome to the latest Cannes liveblog. I'm ripping back the reins from Andrew Pulver as he gets the train down to the south of France, where he'll grab the baton (or, perhaps, just a baguette) from me and I'll fly home.
I'm back in the press room, which is currently humming with slightly inelegant excitement as Brad Pitt is about to walk past, on his journey from the Killing them Softly photocall to the press conference.
10.52am: The film itself is a blood-lust-tastic crime thriller set in 2008 round New Orleans. Directed by Andrew Dominik, with whom Pitt teamed up for The Assassination of Jesse James by Robert Ford the Coward, it's a tale of sweaty crooks and desperate junkies, cracked codes of honour and the primacy of cash.

1,779 films were submitted to be included as an Official Selection of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival but in the end, only 54 films made it. From competition to Un Certain Regard to midnight screenings (I especially want to see Dario Argento's "Dracula" from the midnight screening category), here's your full list!
The Cannes Film Festival is taking place from May 16th to the 27th. Last year, "Drive," "We Need to Talk About Kevin," "Melancholia," "The Artist," and "The Tree of Life" all wowed festival attendees and ultimately made an impact on the year-end award-giving bodies (with "The Artist" ultimately taking the grand prize of them all -- the Best Picture Oscar). The 65th Cannes Film Festival has just announced its line-up of 53 films across four categories with some extremely impressive titles on offer including the latest efforts from filmmakers like Wes Anderson, David Cronenberg, Lee Daniels, Andrew Dominik, John Hillcoat, Walter Salles, Abbas Kiarostami, Ken Loach, Jacques Audiard, Bernardo Bertolucci, Matteo Garrone, Dario Argento, Xavier Dolan, Carlos Reygadas, Takashi Miike and Jeff Nichols.
More titles will likely be added in the coming weeks before the festival runs from May 16th-27th. Here's the ones we know of so far:

This morning the 2012 Cannes lineup was announced at a press conference in Paris and there’s a number of intriguing films in and out of competition this year.
John Hillcoat’s Lawless makes an appearance with Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce forming an excellent cast for the director’s follow up to The Road and Michael Haneke’s Amour will debut at the festival as will new films from Alain Resnais, Jacques Audiard and Jeff Nichols whose Take Shelter as one of my favourites of last year.
Twilight fans wil be well served, not by an earlier screening of the final part of Breaking Dawn thankfully but with stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson leading Walter Salles’ On the Road and David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s Cosmoplis. Interestingly Cronenberg Jr. also has a film playing – son Brandon has his film Anitviral in Un Certain Regard.

Cannes Film Festival bosses Thierry Fremaux and Gilles Jacob have revealed the full official selection of films to play at this year’s 65th annual extravaganza on the South of France.
The big news coming out of the Paris press-conference reveal is that two of our most anticipated forthcoming films; John Hillcoat’s ‘Lawless’ (formerly The Wettest County in the World) and Andrew Dominik’s ‘Killing Them Softly’ (formerly Cogan’s Trade) will debut on the Croisette. With their ensemble casts, intriguing concepts and exciting talent behind the camera, we had our fingers crossed tightly that they might debut in Cannes and our prayers were answered this morning.

Still the biggest and most prestigious film festival in the world, despite fierce competition, Cannes is one of the major dates in the film lover's calendar. And more so than ever this year, there's been a great deal of speculation as to what the films in competition might be. We knew that Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" was opening the festival, and we knew, as of yesterday, that "Therese D," the last film from director Claude Miller, starring Audrey Tautou, would close it.
But beyond that, nothing's been certain, although all kinds of rumors have been circulating. Would we see Terrence Malick debut a new film for the second year in a row? This morning the official 2012 Cannes Film Festival line-up was announced after the selection committee saw 1,779 films submitted from 26 different countries. Of those, 54 have been chosen (so far) including the opening night film which will be Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom and the closing night film comes from the late Claude Miller's Therese D. starring Audrey Tautou. Looking over the list the most universally recognized names are among a stacked competition list that includes the likes of Wes Anderson, Jacques Audiard, Leos Carax, David Cronenberg, Lee Daniels, Andrew Dominik, Matteo Garrone, Michael Haneke, John Hillcoat, Sangsoo Hong, Sangsoo Im, Abbas Kiarostami, Ken Loach, Cristian Mungiu, Jeff Nichols, Alain Resnais, Walter Salles and Thomas Vinterberg.
