[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Ripley” below.]
The turning point for “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s limited Netflix series re-imagining of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” occurs in Episode 3 (“Sommerso”), when grifter Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) murders Dickie (Johnny Flynn) in a boat in Sanremo. But the grifter discovers that murder is a filthy business in a bravura 20-minute sequence, in which he has difficulty disposing of Dickie’s body, and we observe every arduous moment in close to real-time.
This protracted view of Tom’s twisted mind in action is made even more menacing in black-and-white (shot by “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Robert Elswit). After learning that his grift has come to a sudden end, Tom grabs the oar and beats Dickie to death. But then everything goes wrong.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1974 masterpiece “The Conversation” will be remade as a TV series, with “Margin Call” and “All Is Lost” filmmaker J.C. Chandor attached to both write and direct the series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chandor will direct via his CounterNarrative Films banner alongside Temple Hill, producer Adam Fishbach, and executive produced by Coppola’s American Zoetrope. Erin Levy, known for her work on “Mad Men” and “Mindhunter,” will be the showrunner on “The Conversation” remake.
MRC is the studio behind the series, and the company optioned the TV remake rights directly from the Coppola estate.
Despite a rumor that Aubrey Plaza was attached to star, no cast is involved at this stage, as a source close to the project tells IndieWire. Other media reports suggested it would be a limited series and that it was set up at a network, but it is being envisioned as an ongoing series,...

A potential trend is emerging: Actors being forced to shut up in movies.
The new trailer for John Woo’s dialogue-free thriller Silent Night (below) teases a protagonist played by Joel Kinnaman who’s unable to speak. (“Nothing speaks louder than revenge,” reads the movie’s tagline.) The trailer follows Hulu’s similarly dialogue-free hit alien invasion thriller No One Will Save You.
Both are coming, ironically enough, during the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has actors dutifully not speaking to the press about their studio projects.
It’s not clear if dialogue-free movies can correctly be called a trend yet (the old media rule of thumb is it takes at least three examples to use the T-word). But it’s interesting that roughly 100 years after the silent movie era that at least a couple of filmmakers are exploring feature-length storytelling without leaning on dialogue at around the same time.

The list of directors who put their trust in Robby Müller could constitute a nice history of post-war cinema. A retrospective of films on which he served as Dp reflects accordingly––so’s the case with Metrograph’s “Robby Müller: Remain in Light,” which starts on Friday, September 29, and for which we’re glad to debut the trailer.
Contained therein are bits and pieces of what Metrograph attendees can anticipate. The series will offer a chance to see (among others) 24 Hour Party People, Alice in the Cities, The American Friend, Barfly, Breaking the Waves, Dead Man, Down by Law, Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, Kings of the Road, Korczak, Living the Light – Robby Müller, Mystery Train, Repo Man, Saint Jack, To Live and Die in L.A., When Pigs Fly, The Wrong Move, and Paris, Texas. Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. Directed by J.C. Chandor, best known for writing and directing the films Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier, here’s a first look at the brand new trailer starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe.
Check out the trailer for the R-rated film.
The film has been in development since Summer 2018.

Filmmaker J.C. Chandor – an Oscar nominee for writing “Margin Call,” the man who directed one of Robert Redford’s final lead performances in “All Is Lost,” and a New York Mets fan – is back with his first studio blockbuster: “Kraven the Hunter,” the latest entry in Sony’s expanded Spider-Man universe.
The studio has had some success with its Spider-Man adjacent films, turning “Venom” into a blockbuster franchise with Tom Hardy and even scoring modest ticket sales with “Morbius” with Jared Leto despite toxic reviews. “Kraven the Hunter” seems to follow the template, turning a classic Spider-Man villain into an anti-hero, of sorts, who isn’t necessarily all-bad. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, a violent killer whose DNA was altered after being attacked by a lion (sure). Oscar winner Russell Crowe plays Kraven the Hunter’s evil father with Oscar winner Ariana DeBose set as the female lead,...

Spanish animation shows off its serious side in Cannes’ “Revelations!” showcase, dedicated to new shorts both by promising beginners and acclaimed filmmakers, such as Alberto Mielgo, who scored an Academy Award for “The Windshield Wiper.”
In June, four of the presented titles will also head to Annecy: María Lorenzo’s “Fashion Victims 2.0,” “Lost at Sea,” directed by Lucija Stojevic and Andrés Bartos, Pablo Río’s “Conej Steps Out” and Carla Pereira and Juanfran Jacinto’s “All Is Lost.”
“Animators, or just artists in general, tend to reflect on their times. Some of these films were born during the pandemic and yes, there is this melancholy to them. They are tackling multiple serious subjects,” says animation curator Carolina López Caballero.
That includes elderly suicide, like in the case of Diego Porral’s tender “Leopoldo from the Bar,” where a lonely man walks through ever-changing streets of Madrid accompanied by a massive pigeon.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson beamed in to Las Vegas’ CinemaCon on Monday to show the first footage from his anticipated Marvel film “Kraven the Hunter” — an ultraviolent spree of blood and throbbing biceps that pleased the annual convention of theater owners.
Taylor-Johnson called the J.C. Chandor-directed project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He then gave an answer to what he deemed “the internet’s biggest question” — whether the film would receive an R-rating.
“Fuck yeah, it will be rated R,” the star said to huge applause from the Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.
In the world premiere footage, Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven is a tactical stalker with a penchant for cropped leather vests and five-star hair. He shreds his victims viscerally, often with primitive claw-shaped weapons. Blood pours freely over the screen and, at one intense moment,...

On March 17 Focus Features released “Inside,” a psychological thriller that stars Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe as Nemo, an art thief trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive.
Critics are raving about Dafoe’s performance, despite mixed reception for the film overall. The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, which rates the movie fresh at 61%, states, “Inside might be a one-note drama that verges on an endurance test, but it does have Willem Dafoe going for it, which is nice.” Read our full review round-up below.

You didn’t think Willem Dafoe would star in a conventional escape room thriller, did you? Then again, “Inside” is barely an escape room thriller despite it being about an art thief trapped in the location of his latest heist. Greek filmmaker Vasilis Katsoupis’s elegant provocation may be closer to the kind of existential mood pieces that generations ago defined so much of European cinema, but it’s been given a modern gloss of design, tension, and star power more in keeping with the gripping tales of solitude that have found a mainstream audience.
Inevitably, because of its challenging nature, “Inside” and its methodical excavation of one man’s survival instincts in a place not assumed to require endurance –- a luxury penthouse in Manhattan — will likely only appeal to the arthouse crowd. Even among discerning moviegoers its more indulgent elements may occasionally grate.

There’s more than enough blurring of the lines between reality and dark fantasy, not to mention any conventional grasp of temporality, to position Inside as a new entry in the Greek Weird Wave. But subtract the brutalist-chic design aesthetics and the meticulously curated art collection, both of which have major bearing on the unfolding psychological thriller, and you have an inverted take on familiar one-person survival dramas like Cast Away or All is Lost. How much you get out of the narrative feature debut of commercials director Vasilis Katsoupis will depend on your appetite for another of Willem Dafoe’s heady plunges into a character’s soul in torment.

This film’s daytime-soap vibes render an unquestionably inspiring true story into an experience that feels entirely false
There is much to be inspired by in the real-life story of Jessica Watson, who, at 16, famously set out to become the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world. But translating that solitude-filled 210 day voyage into interesting drama for the screen is no easy task - as director Sarah Spillane’s gloppy, goofily executed and terribly twee Netflix film reminds us. It’s impossible to predict how any title will fare on the streaming platform, but I’ll be surprised if this one isn’t quickly lost in the algorithms.
Every narrative involving arduously long trips across intimidatingly large bodies of water must at some point reiterate the traveller’s loneliness. In the 2003 Australian thriller Visitors, Radha Mitchell delivers a rousing performance as a young woman also sailing solo around the world,...

Superman & Lois Season 2 Episode 13
In the world of Superman & Lois, heroism can come in many forms. You don’t need superpowers in order to help people or to choose to do the right thing when it counts. You don’t even need to be an adult, as this series has proven time and time again with the deft way it weaves multiple plot threads featuring its teen characters through all the major stories it’s telling.
“All is Lost” sees John Henry’s daughter Natalie put on a mechanical superhero suit of her own this week, and while she looks incredibly cool, the episode further underlines that her real superpowers have a lot more to do with her heart than whatever cool weapons she’s built. Resolved to help her father and save the planet she’s adopted as her second home, she...

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Season 2 Episode 13 of Superman & Lois, “All is Lost.” If you don’t want to be spoiled, go try to build a metallic supersuit and come back when it’s fully operational and fashionable.] Tonight’s episode of Superman & Lois may have been titled “All is Lost,” but even as Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) saw his powers sucked away by the newly merged parasitic villain Ally Alston (Rya Kihlstedt), Smallville gained a new do-gooder. And thank god, because we’re gonna need all hands on deck for what the show has in store for its season finale. After weeks of hinting at her work on an exo-skeleton suit similar to her father John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks), his steely daughter Natalie (Tayler Buck) donned the heavy metal outfit and joined the race to save the day — or at least Clark — during the hour’s fateful showdown with Aly. There's nothing quite like watching some poor saps endure the worst of the worst from the comfort of a movie theater auditorium. Against all odds, the survival movie subgenre all but begs audiences to bet on whether a movie's core group of characters will make it to the end. The subgenre itself is vast, with some — such as 2018's "All is Lost" — trading in sentimentality more than survival thrills. Similarly, the likes of "Everest," "127 Hours," and "Into the Wild" match ripped-from-the-headlines true stories with the budgets and pedigree of major studios.

J.C. Chandor, who previously tackled “All Is Lost” and “Triple Frontier,” is directing “Kraven the Hunter.” The film, which also stars Russell Crowe, will be released theatrically on Jan. 13, 2023.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing, with the screenplay written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk.

Oscar winner Russell Crowe has entered the Spiderverse.
The “Gladiator” star has joined the cast of “Kraven the Hunter” in an unspecified role. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is starring in the title role as one of Spider-Man’s most deadly antagonists.
J.C. Chandor, who previously oversaw “All Is Lost” and “Triple Frontier,” is directing. Crowe is best known for his immersive roles in the likes of “The Insider” and “Master and Commander,” most of them pitched toward older audiences, but he’s no stranger to the world of superheroes and spandex. He previously played Jor-El, father to Superman, in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” He’s also due to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
For maximum confusion, “Kraven the Hunter” is not part of the official MCU, although he appears in Marvel comics. He is one of the characters who falls under Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man licensing deal.

Paramount Pictures has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Little Dixie, an action thriller from writer-director John Swab, which stars Frank Grillo. Deadline hears that the studio will look to release the film in the second half of this year.
In the Roxwell Films title, Grillo portrays Doc, who facilitates a fragile truce between the Governor and a cartel, trading prosecutorial leniency for finance. When this truce dissolves, Doc is left to fend for himself and protect the one untainted thing in his life: his daughter, Little Dixie.
The actioner also stars Eric Dane, Beau Knapp and Annabeth Gish (Midnight Mass). Jeremy M. Rosen cast the project and produced with Swab and Robert Ogden Barnum for Roxwell Films, in association with Three Point Capital.

In 2003 at the eighth annual Critics Choice Awards, there were three in the actor race: Jack Nicholson for “About Schmidt,” Daniel Day-Lewis for “Gangs of New York” and Robin Williams for “One Hour Photo.” There was a tie — between Nicholson and Day-Lewis — but Williams ended up stealing the show when Nicholson invited him on stage. “Robin would you come up and would you give the funniest acceptance speech I ever gave?” Nicholson inquired. Williams then launched into a lengthy “speech” that had stars from Renée Zellweger to Nicole Kidman howling and was praised by the media.
It remains a standout moment in the organization’s long history and a personal favorite of Joey Berlin, CEO of the Critics Choice Assn. (Cca), who has served as executive producer on every Critics Choice Awards broadcast since its inception with the film awards in 1995; TV awards began in 2011. Now, the Critics Choice Awards find themselves at a crossroads.

There are lost-at-sea thrillers that make a virtue of the leanness of their narratives. J.C. Chandor’s “All Is Lost,” Wolfgang Fischer’s “Styx” and Chris Kentis’ legitimately traumatizing “Open Water” (not to mention Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” if we switch in space for ocean) all spun gripping tales of survival — or not — using minimal dialogue and very little character backstory. But the pitfalls of this less-is-more approach are laid bare in and stereotypes. In its familiarity, “Submersible” at least appropriately evokes such a sinking feeling.
We’re engulfed in the action immediately, when the film opens, as the rickety, makeshift sub codenamed “Guadalupe” is already mid-crisis. Its crew of three — secretive pseudo-captain Felix (Leynar Gómez), quiet, older engine maintenance guy Kleber (Carlos Valencia) and jittery, crazy-eyed wild card Aquiles (José Restrepo) — scrabble about the squalid, listing interior and decide in desperation to redistribute the weight on board by shifting their precious cargo around.

The holiday season is almost here and Amazon Prime is getting in the mood with its list of December 2021 releases. Sure there are the usual Christmas movies to be found but the real gift this month are two big original titles.
The sixth and final season of beloved sci-fi series The Expanse premieres on Dec. 10. Amazon is doing its usual release strategy of three episodes on the premiere day followed by a weekly schedule so there’s still some time to be spent with the crew of the Rocinante. The other big ticket item is the Desi and Lucy biopic Being the Ricardos on Dec. 21. Sure, Aaron Sorkin seems to be completely disinterested in I Love Lucy and Nicole Kidman bears no passing resemblance to the iconic comedienne whatsoever but uh…it’s a movie!

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

As an actor, George Clooney serves up self-deprecation and charm; as a filmmaker, the same impulses come across as bitter and ironic convictions. That’s certainly the case in “The Midnight Sky,” a gorgeous take on the apocalypse that doesn’t try to reinvent the formula because, well, you know how these things go. Clooney directs and stars in this ambitious adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s 2016 novel, and there’s much to appreciate about his by-the-book approach: Despite the blockbuster budget, he’s crafted , laced together with mournful gazes at the icy tundra and the sad revolutions of spacecraft en route to its dying home.
As it slips between these lyrical settings, Clooney conjures both the cosmic awe of “Gravity” and the eerie isolation of “The Thing,” an admirable set of traditions that lend an imitative feel for much of the movie. Yet for the actor-filmmaker, this somber, effects-driven tone...

Exclusive: Miles Teller (Whiplash), Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and Oscar-winner William Hurt (Kiss Of The Spider Woman) are set to star in political satire The Fence from in-demand Icelandic director Grímur Hákonarson.
The film’s fun premise sees two liberal newlyweds increasingly at odds with their ultra-conservative ex-marine neighbor over a nine-foot-tall fence that he insists on building to keep his home safe from potential terrorists.
ICM Partners and CAA Media Finance are representing worldwide distribution rights and launching the project this week for the virtual AFM. Interestingly there’s no international sales firm attached. Filming is slated to get underway next March.
The film’s premise is fertile ground right now given the polarized political climate and the casting should make it an attractive prospect for buyers or financiers.

Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks with director J.C. Chandor to helm a movie based around the Marvel Comics villain Kraven the Hunter, according to Deadline. Redford has played just about every character, from a Western outlaw to a talented American skier.

Hildur Guðnadóttir already has an Emmy and a Globe. My streaming service in Australia suddenly decided to log me out just as the presenter came on stage, so I was cursing the world and rebooting! Once the anxiety was over, and Hildur was walking up to accept her trophy, it was time to reflect on a woman winning the equivalent Oscar. The Globe win for Score doesn't always transfer to an Oscar win (sometimes the winner isn't even nominated -- as with All is Lost and First Man in recent years) but could Guðnadóttir repeat?

Are we getting a sequel to “A Most Violent Year”? That’s what actress Jessica Chastain suggested on New Year’s Day via Twitter with a series of cryptic messages, embedded below. The original film, released in 2014 and directed by J.C. Chandor, is a 1980s-set crime thriller starring Oscar Isaac as an immigrant fuel supplier embroiled in a moral quandary amid the corruption of his oil empire. Chastain co-starred as Isaac’s wife, Anna, in a witchy role outfitted with press-on nails and a Brooklyn accent. “Guess who may be visiting these characters again?” she said on Twitter.
What form such a sequel will take remains an open question. A feature film? A limited series? The original movie, made for $20 million, eked out $12 million worldwide — hardly penetrating the global consciousness but impressing critics with its visual and narrative rendering of 1981 New York. Chastain especially earned praise for her turn as Anna Morales.

I always describe it as the Lumet effect or the Lumet application. It’s basically the approach director J.C. Chandor does with all his film; apply the moral tenets and classicist sensibilities of the late great filmmaker Sidney Lumet to all his films. This application of style, tone, and feeling is definitely accurate of Chandor’s 2014 A24 moral crime drama, “A Most Violent Year.” Starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, with Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo, Albert Brooks, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

As it bulks up and partners up with AMC and Spoke, the company plans to develop projects in film, television, and across all media.
Before the Door’s two-year first-look deal with AMC for scripted series stems from Quinto’s starring role on the network’s supernatural horror drama series NOS4A2.

We live in what is both an amazing and awful time for content creation. With so many platforms available that both create and display content, there’s definitely not a shortage of movies out there these days. However, with so much stuff watchable, not everything is gonna get watched. One of Netflix’s recent big-name flicks, Triple Frontier, apparently failed spectacularly enough that the Og streaming site is now going to be investing much less in future original creations.
The film, starring Ben Affleck and Oscar Issac, reportedly cost $115 million to make. J.C. Chandor, the director, had previously put out good flicks like Margin Call and A Most Violent Year. Granted, none of his past features really generated any money at the box office, and that trend continued into his streaming career.
Triple Frontier was watched in 52 million households during its debut month of April, which, I guess, is wildly under expectations.
