Not what I expected
nicolemariew-752153 November 2022
This ended up being a really sweet and different type of movie. I enjoyed it quite a lot. The characters were all well done and the angels were hilarious. It was some fun nostalgia seeing Reginald VelJohnson again <3 , honestly they could put him in all the new movies and I wouldn't complain!

Of course it's a cheesy Hallmark movie and you need to suspend disbelief but I got kick out of a storyline that wasn't the usual predictable girl leaves her corporate job for a tree lot attendant back home. Overall I found this very heartwarming.and it was an enjoyable way to kick off the holiday season.

Different and pleasing
VetteRanger1 November 2022
I, and many other reviewers, frequently mention and sometimes complain about all the overused plot tropes which are retreaded through these Christmas romances.

The writers for Ghosts of Christmas Always struck through them all for a story full of imagination and surprises. This version of A Christmas Carol takes us into their idea of what an operation of "Three Ghost Teams" might be like ... with humor and feeling and warmth.

By the time they worked their charm, I was left with an impression I've seldom had for one of these films ... almost the equal of Fallen Angel with Gary Sinise, and it's been a LONG time since Fallen Angel.

As a writer, I might have picked a slightly different device at the end to resolve the romantic element of the story, but I can't really carp over the one they picked. I'll suspend my couple of doubts and enjoy what we got, a wonderful film.

Hallmarks Best!
rkaden-281503 November 2022
It's become a yearly tradition to try and watch as many Hallmark holiday movies as we can. For the most part, 30 minutes into each, we can figure out how they'll end but continue to watch because Hallmark gives us that escape from reality and a good feeling. This movie hower, was so very different and had a great twist at the end. It had just about everything you could want in a great rom-com, comedy, romance, heartache, tragedy and a great finale!

The actors were great each with their own little quirks to pull off this fantasy of a story. We may have given this a 10 star rating but, when the movies was over we both had to think and talk about the ending and say, oh yes....that must be what happened. This was the best Hallmark holiday movie we've seen in memory. Highly recommend it. This is one we'd watch again to pick up on things we might have missed or just to enjoy it again.

"All is as it Should Be"

Warning: Spoilers
There is one word for this Hallmark Christmas movie and that is "Amazing". I'm amazed at the writing of both the original plot and the clever and funny dialogue. Yes, it is based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens which is hardly original, but I have never seen such a creative take on the story.

For centuries and centuries, every Christmas season teams of 3 ghosts (all of whom died on Christmas) are sent out worldwide to "Scrooge" hand-picked mortals who need to discover the true meaning of Christmas. Charles Dickens was Scrooged last century, and it changed his life. In fact, he wrote a book about it. We meet the 3 ghost team who are the focus: Arlene, a cynical no-nonsense Asian woman (brilliantly played by Lori Tan Chinn), A wise, warm and sophisticated Reginald Vel Johnson (did I hear a reference to Die Hard come out of one character's mouth?) And the young and beautiful Kat Marley played by Kim Matula.. But this year, something weird is going on. The man they are sent to "scrooge", Peter Barron isn't perfect (he is a bit of a coward with his awful father) but he is kind and good and filled with the Christmas Spirit. Arlene (Christmas Past) does her number on Peter, and Kat (Present) comes along to help. Peter and Kat get to know and start to fall for each other. They give Peter the courage to stand up to his father and the 3 ghosts return to headquarters, a little confused, but mission accomplished. But Oops. Charlie, the angel in charge, in a humorous turn by Blair Baker, screwed up big time. It was Peter's father that was supposed to have been given the scrooge treatment! Or is it? They have to go back, but I'll stop there with the plot. But it is not until Christmas Future steps in that we are given the final piece to the resolution. There are lots and lots of threads that come together and many layers to this funny and touching tale. The mysteries that wind through are solved in a very satisfying way but with enough clues to give the viewer a fair chance to figure it out on their own.

All of the actors were new to Hallmark, and they were all fantastic. I think it is significant that they didn't use any popular Hallmark mainstays as a crutch. I'm not sure this would have worked with a Lacey Chabert or an Andrew Walker. I loved the self-aware sense of humor the writer exhibited. Two of the "Scroogees" know what's going on immediatelywhen the ghosts come to visit because of all of the Christmas Carol-based movies that they have seen. Scrooged with Bill Murray is a favorite. But also a Carrie Fisher version, that is "highly underrated." That would be Hallmark's own It's Christmas, Carol! Only Hallmark devotees would know this. It's kind of an inside joke partially because it is rated very low.

The detailed attention to the sets, the wardrobe, the graphics, the casting, the character building, and well, just everything, shows that Hallmark knew that they had something special here and they were proud of it. They have every right to be.

Left me in tears and ready to watch it again
teepack-753122 November 2022
My wife and I have been watching the Countdown to Christmas movies for years. We love the familiar actors and storylines. The movies rarely get us out of our comfort zones. You know what to expect. And then a movie like this comes along and upsets the Apple cart in a most unexpected and enjoyable way.

Coming up with a unique twist on the Scrooge story is a challenge, and this film was up for it. The cast was great and featured mostly new to Hallmark talent. The chemistry between the leads was palpable. The script was filled with genuinely funny moments and created a believable take on a well known classic. I was bawling the first time I saw it. It brought me to tears the second time I watched it as well. This is the first Hallmark movie I have ever rated a 10.

Exceptionally good!

We're all familiar with the cookie cutter (literally) Christmas tv movies that give us endless variations on the same 4 or 5 basic storylines. This movie is a refreshing change of pace, offering a unique & quirky take on the familiar Scrooge tale. The ensemble cast really clicks and the dialogue is snappy & brisk, the emotions are honest & believable. The ghost of Christmas past is a hoot and has some great one-liners. Of course there's a happy ending, but with a surprising twist. This is one of the most enjoyable Hallmark Christmas movies that I've seen in many years. A thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming story. Well done!

All in all, a more than watchable flick
r96sk11 December 2022
A pretty good take on the classic Scrooge festive storyline.

'Ghosts of Christmas Always' features a cast that is, I'd say, a step up from the usual standard that Hallmark normally produce. Kim Matula and Ian Harding are good, I like how the latter's character is aware of the clichés and reimaginings of Scrooge from real life.

Matula is joined as one of the ghosts by Reginald VelJohnson and Lori Tan Chinn, which is strong casting. I would've liked to have see more of them in truth, though both are still positive additions - particularly Chinn. Christopher Innvar is solid in his role too, even with the major Jonathan Hyde/Sam Parrish vibe his character had going on.

They do well in connecting all the dots in the story, I especially enjoyed the stuff with Matula's Katherine (Marley... nicely done) and Liana Hunt's Betsey, which is rather sweet. The last chunk of the film is real nice, in fact.

The music is also relatively neat, there's a bit of it that reoccurs and it kept reminding me of the main theme in 2004's 'The Polar Express'; which I adore, so every time I heard those similar notes here it did give me Xmas vibes.

All in all, a more than watchable flick; one I'd happily revisit.

A 2022 Christmas movie winner!
Ekm8285116 November 2022
Sometimes some of my "pre-season Christmas movie picks" end up being a let down and others (like this movie) end up being a pleasant surprise. I absolutely loved Ghosts of Christmas Always and the movie's new twist on a classic! This was my first time seeing Kim Matula and Ian Harding. They had a lovely chemistry and sparkled in their Hallmark debut-And I will tune in every single time "Carl Winslow" is in a movie (more of him, please!) The "scrooging" ghosts had a fun and fresh dynamic together. This was a heartwarming movie that really checked off all my boxes for a feel good Christmas movie. My family will watch every Christmas season!

The concept of getting Scrooged is really cute and as a romantic, I really enjoyed the ending.
cgvsluis13 December 2023
It is these three ghosts' job to "Scrooge" one person a year the week before Christmas. This year they visit the former hometown of Katherine "Kat". Do when they are done, instead of joining her fellow ghosts Roy and Arlene for drinks...she heads to her old stomping grounds where someone who shouldn't be able to sees her. The next year they are sent to Scrooge Peter Baron...the guy who saw her, only he doesn't seem to actually need scrooging. Once the job is done, they discover from their boss Charlie, that they Scrooged the wrong Baron and it should have been his father. They are sent back to fix it only they have less than a day and he can't see them.

There is a sweet but tragic back story for Kat that ties everything together and made me enjoy the film as a romantic. I thought Kat and Peter had done great chemistry making this a recommendation for my fellow romantics. This was not your typical Hallmark holiday film.

Unique approach to an old story
Jackbv12331 October 2022
Everyone knows the story and they have seen the movies. That's a continuing gag in this one. So here "Scrooging" is not something that happened once, but there are dozens of Christmas ghosts working in teams every year. What is particularly unique about this one is that there is something off about Scrooging Peter and the three ghosts don't really know why they are doing this one, at least not all of them.

The viewer quickly figures out that this story is going to have a major addition to the usual Christmas Carol, a plot line from some other well known movies, but getting there can be far more complicated than you would think at first.

This movie has a lot of cute gags and some romance. The dialogue and acting are good. The pacing is good. There is at least one mystery. And given a story like this, there are some great sentimental moments. The ending is done well. There is good chemistry between Kim Matula and Ian Harding.

This movie both keeps you guessing and has some predictable things in it. It held my interest all the way through, and I will probably watch it again soon to pick up what I missed the first time.

God bless us, every one!

Ghosts Of Christmas Always (2022) -

I really wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning of this film because the TinTin-like "Ghost Of Christmas Past" was quite odd and not the best actor, which had me reaching for the off button, but I was really glad that I stuck with it in the end.

The story was a very different interpretation of 'A Christmas Carol' and done well for the most part.

The producers seemed to have made an effort this year to think outside the box with their efforts and I've really appreciated some of what they've done. This was definitely one of the more successful ones.

I loved the connection between Peter (Ian Harding) and Katherine (Kim Matula), because it was really sweet and flirty, as it should be. Quite often they are all tension and falling out, before they realise that they like each other, which has become very tired.

Peter was a nice guy, that obviously deserved good things, because of the thoughtful work that he did.

And she was the standard nice girl, in the form of an Angel or "Ghost Of Christmas Present".

Their relationship might have been considered a bit sickly and the concept a tad daft, but I thought that they got the balance just right, certainly compared to others of the same genre.

I liked the past blending with the present and the future, because it meant that overall it didn't seem so old fashioned or sentimental, but all one story intertwining cleverly and it wasn't coloured with a special filter to make it ethereal which kept things consistent all the way through.

There were some elements that I could pick on. I could have done without the singer for a start, the character was fine, but didn't have to sing or could have had any other job? The song and it's performance seemed to cheapen things.

And the voicemail Peter left was uncharacteristic and mean, which jarred against his general good nature.

Otherwise it was cheerful and while it wasn't filled with Christmas activity, it still had that seasonal warmth that 'A Christmas Carol' and it's variations have always brought, because of the heart at the centre of that story.

I will be sure to look out for this one again next year.

7.25/10.

Hallmark hit it out of the park with this movie!
emandmom9 November 2022
Long time review reader first time poster. I've been meaning to post reviews but always get worried my writing won't be up to par with all the great reviewers here, but for this movie, I just had to post a review because I thought it was absolute perfection!

I'm not going to rehash the plot of the movie as so many have done so much more eloquently than I could I'll just tell you what I liked so much about the movie.

This was a very well written movie, it isn't your usual Hallmark romance Christmas movie, it's much more than that, it was funny, touching, Christmassy, and romantic, it also spreads a very good message if you are blessed and have the means to help others you should, giving will make you feel better, happier, more fulfilled than anything else ever could.

I thought the actors were all fantastic, especially the two leads. Kim Matula is beautiful and just as cute as a button and the lead actor Ian Harding was so handsome I just couldn't take my eyes off of him. I truly hope Hallmark brings these two back for many more movies!

I didn't see the ending coming so it was a wonderful surprise!

This is a movie I can and will rewatch over and over, I've kept in my DVR so sometime during the year when I need a fun pick me up I'll be able to watch it again.

I Loved everything about this movie!

Not typical Hallmark formula
robwoods-863614 November 2022
I enjoyed watching this film which was not the typical Hallmark romantic formula, with a unique spin on "A Christmas Carol." In fact, they had more than one spin on the Dicken's classic. The four main actors were all engaging. The plot was a little more intricate than the average Hallmark romance, adding a couple layers of mystery. The ending was satisfying, but I wish they had explained a little better the mechanics of how it worked out the way it does. I might have given it a higher rating than eight, if they had explained just a little more. I still recommend it, especially if you enjoy hallmark films.

Very original Christmas Carol inspired movie and not at all like typical Hallmark
ssides-8541516 November 2022
Production quality and acting better than most. Really good story my wife and I both enjoyed, Several surprises in the story that we didn't see coming which again was refreshing for a Hallmark movie and usual Christmas movies. Diverse cast is good to see and where some of the secondary parts were the kind you wanted to know more about by the end. The movie is a bit of a mystery through-ought and it's not about girl getting the guy she wants, although there is a bit of that. The characters don't really know what is going on or think they know and you get to experience them figuring out as they go along. Solid Christmas movie.

A heartwarming spin on the holiday classic.
firebolt-0551731 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's hundreds of adaptation of the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol" and I can safely say that this is another favorite of mine.

Long story short, this movie has tons of humor, heartwarming holiday moments, a tearjerker reveal, and it's all tied together in the end to leave you with an uplifting feeling.

SPOILERS!!!

I personally loved how it was revealed that Katherine was the grandma's best friend who died trying to help those in need. It tied in nicely with the overall theme of the movie and helped resolved the main issue between the father and son.

I also loved how Katherine realizing what she wanted and venturing into the "Great Unknown" lead to her getting a second chance at life with not only Peter, but with helping out other on a greater scale.

Finally something different from Hallmark! This was a really great movie. We all know the basic Christmas Carol story, but this take on it was very creative and a pleasure to watch. I loved all the actors, too. Some new faces, all much appreciated! The acting felt very natural; another departure from the often stale performances we've seen so many times from Hallmark. The writing was great, no huge holes in the plot or lame twists in the story. Just a feel good, fun and modern A Christmas Carol. Hallmark, please read all these reviews and you'll see where your loyal fans want you to take them.

Warning: Spoilers
...Flirting with his grandma?!! Lol that's all I thought until the very end of the movie. It was a great new take on the overdone classic. I didn't think I would enjoy the movie based on all the ads but gave it a try as nothing else was on. What a surprise! I loved the "mystery" and the unexpected twists. It was a great story and the characters all had depth and it explained why they were the way they are. I was confused with the ending - does she remember she was a ghost and all that happened? Did she get a whole life and they suddenly meet and fall as non ghosts? It seemed like they were both "in on it" and the life they build was after the whole story happened. Time travel stuff is always so confusing. Anyways it was a lovely movie and I'll be watching it again.

A definite Hallmark Must See!
susanmnorth7 November 2022
When I review Hallmark, I rate based on other Hallmark shows I've seen because that's what I hope for when I check the IMDB rating before I decide to watch a movie. I already know what to 'sort of' expect. This one is different!! Ghosts of Christmas Always is a definite must see. The script is so unique taking us on a 'sorta familiar' ride but then the twists and turns. The number of times I said "Wait a minute!?" and couldn't wait to see where the story was going to go next. The performances all deserves high accolades with a wonderful blend of heart and humour. AND of course Christmas magic. I loved this one! Bravo Hallmark.

Brilliantly written. Brilliantly acted. Quality details throughout the entire production. Every cast member perfect. No trite and tired tropes. Inventive twists on a beloved Christmas story. It made me laugh and cry. It sets the bar so high for Hallmark Christmas movies. I would definitely place it in the top five I've seen over many years.

The chemistry of the leads was among the most real and natural in any Hallmark movie. The supporting characters were so full of personality and spice. Nothing felt "phoned in" at any time. The weaving of the plot line was ingenious and kept you guessing until just the last couple satisfying minutes that provided the joyful ending everyone wanted.

Thank you, Hallmark, for a superlative movie that will stand the test of time.

A new favorite Hallmark Christmas movie.
mccabe-shannon26 November 2022
This movie came out less than a month ago and I e already watched it twice. I definitely see myself catching this one in the years to come as it's definitely one of the better/best Hallmark Christmas movies.

The acting is spectacular. I'd never seen the female lead before (atleast nothing that came to me) and think she is absolutely amazing. She is a great actress for this genre, she is really pretty, seems super sweet... she definitely has a good career on the Hallmark Channel (especially since they lost some of their staple actors). Ian Harding was great I haven't seen him in much other than PLL (which I didn't watch too much of) but he is definitely easy on the eyes, and a great hallmark leading man. He is a good actor and affable. All of the side characters were really good too- especially the other 2 Christmas angels (the dad was meh).

The storyline itself was really good. Obviously every take on A Christmas Carol has pretty much been done. This was a creative new take on it. And while we all can predict the things that happen in hallmark movies, this has a moment where the outcome may be predictable but the way it was written in was creative.

It was beautifully shot, the script was great, locations and production were good, overall story was good, acting was good.

It was a really sweet warm-hearted movie.

A surprisingly funny and very satisfying update of A Christmas Carol
MichaelByTheSea4 November 2022
I loved this movie.

First of all, I love time traveling in movies and the trope of making characters see things in their lives (and in their alternate lives) with the benefit of hindsight and a heightened self awareness. But this took the Dickens journey into the past, present and future to a whole new level. I loved how they revised and reworked all the Scrooge "rules" (and turned Scrooging into a verb). This was definitely one of the most creative, unique and interesting Hallmark movies that I can recall ever seeing.

Kim Matula as Kat, and Ian Harding as Peter were wonderful. Ian Harding seemed familiar but I don't recall ever watching Kim Matula in anything before. She was lovely. I really enjoyed both of them and I hope to see more of them in future Hallmark movies. I wanted their characters to be together, as did the characters, but I didn't know how that would work, and neither did the characters. And, frankly, if you're looking for logic, and a rational explanation for the ending (or the "magic" throughout), you've come to the wrong movie.

But if you're looking for a movie with wit and warmth and true love, this is it. Although I don't recall a Hallmark rom-com that included the jarring sound of someone getting killed by a car before (but I agree with including that scene; it leaves a powerful impression on the viewer).

The movie was brilliantly written by Keith Hemstreet (who did the screenplay for another great new Christmas movie called Noel Next Door) & Zac Hug (who has written 11 Hallmark movies in the last 4 years).

Although I didn't like the theme line "all is as it should be" (some things really should be different), I love how Kat referred to people "in cahoots" with each other as "cahooting" with each other.

When Peter realizes he is going to go on a Dickensian trip through time he is, refreshingly, excited and not scared: ("This is the best Christmas present ever").

There are too many other great lines to mention. A few that I really liked:

Peter: "You never know something's happening for the last time until it's over"

Peter: "Destiny is a false construct"

Peter: "You were that woman who totally ghosted me"

Kat: "I'm not magical, I just get to use magic" Peter: "I think you're pretty magical"

"Christmas is a time for people who are lost to remember who they really are."

I cried, I laughed, I cringed, I swooned. Hallmark Christmas movies just don't get much better than this. I will definitely watch this again before the season is over.

Traditional classic with a twist
alar621 November 2022
Hallmark has done it before.

Adapt classics into their formulated Hallmark mold. This time it-or some very creative, independent production company-tackled Dickens and did a surprisingly decent job.

Ghosts of Christmas Always is an entertaining twist of a Christmas Carol with a smidge of Harry Potter magic thrown in.

The two well-matched, romantic leads-Kim Matula and Ian Harding have a fun chemistry together and the seasoned cast of character actors bring a real magic to the storyline that takes alot of twists and turns.

Luckily, I DVR-ed the movie because I did have to re-watch the last half hour to get the full gist of the ending which felt rushed.

Still, a very entertaining movie.

A new all time favorite.
Whitneywest1011 November 2022
Admittedly, the movies where they try to recreate it or give it a twist are typically not my favorite. I'm looking at whatever that weird Wizard of Oz movie was. The. Worst. This, though?? The. Best. I was hesitant but realized, I actually have no idea what's going to happen! That never happens. And since Hallmark has focused more on the romances in the last few years and stuck too a formula, I cannot tell you the last time a Hallmark Christmas movie had my eyes all wet. My son use to wipe them away as a toddler. He's almost 15 now and it's been years and years since one of these movies had me reaching for the tissues. I adored the acting and the storytelling was perfection. This isn't one to turn on in the background and halfway pay attention to. No, sit up, pay attention, and enjoy! More of this PLEASE HALLMARK!!

So different and fun!
kellylmoore-9013010 December 2022
This movie prompted me to create an account here. I didn't even see a promo...all of a sudden, it was on, and I was hooked. Can we all agree, both the actress and character of Susan Kraine deserve special kudos. From the opening scene, she is a kick!, with a spectacular voice. "Christmas Angel" is a song I can't - and don't want to - get out of my head.

The entire cast is wonderful - and so likeable. You will want to watch this movie again and again! I can't remember feeling so uplifted from a Hallmark movie. A new favorite (along with "The Irresistible Blueberry Farm," which needs to air more often...one of Hallmark's best).

Pop the popcorn, gather by yourself, or with others, and enjoy this instant classic. Merry Christmas~
