Touching Story of Time Disturbance
claudio_carvalho27 March 2017
When a series of time disturbance happens bringing events from 2007 to 2011, the Fringe Division is assigned to investigate. Broyles orders Olivia and Lincoln to bring Peter with them to help the investigations. Soon Peter suggests a means to locate the source of the disturbance and Walter helps him to find the spot. Soon they discover that the electrical engineer Raymond Green and his wife, the professor of theoretical physics are the responsible for the events and there is a time bubble surrounding their house and keeping the place in 2007.

"And Those We Left Behind" is a touching story of time disturbance caused by an old man that keeps his house in 2007 to maintain his beloved wife safe from the deterioration of Alzheimer's disease. Olivia's reaction in the end of the show hoping that Peter meets the Olivia of his original timeline is also a beautiful scene of this romantic episode. My vote is nine.

Wonderfully creative!
VladimirSkywalker12 November 2011
Wow! If there was an opportunity, I would give this episode 12/10! This is precisely why I love Science Fiction as a genre - it is so creative, and still it is possible that we could mess up the world we live in so that the laws of nature as we knew cease to exist. What we lost with the absence of Peter character in the beginning of the season, now slowly returns: the warmth that Joshua Jackson's interpretation gave to Peter Bishop character, his emotional bonds with Olivia and Walter, and his intellectual brilliance are back to town. I can't stop applauding how easy and how effectively the time jumps are solved! The only thing I still dislike about the new season is what Walter Bishop is turned into - a stereotypical "mad scientist", who is paranoid in unpleasant way. His character's witty sparks, renaissance personality and - courage, combined with wonderful father figure, gave "Fringe" something genuinely unique in previous seasons, something that is missing now, I hope not for good. Astrid's character is also sadly marginalized in the new season so far, she also used to have her glorious moments.

Stunning, this reviewer is gob smacked
For hard core scifi junkies, it is thought that two of the best stories ever penned were both from the legendary Richard Matheson. Both were made into movies. In one, to find the woman he loves, a man travels through time. In another, to rescue the woman he loves, a man literally commits suicide so he can be condemned to Hell (which is where she is trapped).

Combing elements of passion (humanism) and scifi is not easy. It takes a deft touch.

This episode of Fringe nails it. Not only do have one of the most powerful stories of the series but there is juxtaposition of the love story in the short (episode) arc against the longer arc where Peter and Olivia no longer recognize each other.

Stephen Root, known for comedy, gives the performance of his life.

They are NOT making this easy for us!
XweAponX14 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
But I am NOT complaining - I like Entertainment, that is not eye candy. Fringe is BRAIN candy, that causes us to THINK. Other shows, that maybe started out the same way, later became dependent on Special Effects: Like the last two Trek series, which depended on not how the stories were, but on how cool the special effects looked. So in a way, I'm glad Fringe took a huge Budget Cut, so when we see Special Effects, they are not being shown in a superfluous manner, but to expand the story and to give us a visual interpretation of a Fringe Event. The Fringe Writing Team, is making us work for our Peter! And making Peter work for Walter's Respect.

At this juncture: Walter hates Peter. Will NOT work with him. Refuses to participate in the investigation, not while Peter is around.

And one other thing becomes clear: Where is Peter? We've been assuming, this is the "Regular Blue Fringe 'Verse" - But it is clear, this is NOT our regular "Blue Fringe 'Verse". He is not in "The Other Side" universe and he is not in the regular "Blue Fringe 'Verse" - So where is he? He's in the Orange Fringe 'Verse, the 'Verse he does not belong. The 'Verse where he was never saved by The Observer. Which drives me crazy and insane, because WHY is "The Vacuum" there? What is the Machine DOING there, if Peter was not supposed to BE in that 'Verse? I'm hoping and Praying that Fox allows us to get to find out, so the more of us watch Fringe on Friday Night, the better chance we'll have at having MORE Fringe in the Future.

And so, now we have that out in the open. Peter Really does not belong where he is, although, we know now, he was brought there for a reason. The Observers never made themselves known in this 'Verse. But we still feel their gentle Ministrations, and wonder what in blazes they are doing, and wonder if we'll ever learn their whole purpose.

This ep has a great performance by Stephen Root and real-life wife Romy Rosemont (Amazing, I just learned this, how cool!). Root, who played Klingon Captain K'Vada in the famous "Spock" Episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" - Unification I and II - Is an Electrician who makes a Time machine that can bring him four years back for 45 minutes a stretch, working from his Wife's notes as she writes down Formulas 4 years earlier - In the Present Time, she is debilitated due to Alzheimer's Disease. So, the Fringe events in this Ep are related to Root going back in Time 4 years to have Chit-Chat's with his Wife.

Once again we see the Fringe theme of the Fibonacci Sequence. Using the sequence, Peter was able to find out where and when the next Root-Created Time Anomaly would hit.

Each time we get comfortable in this series, we have the literal and figurative RUG pulled out from underneath our feet! But now we can see a definitive direction this is going, and I'll stick with it, just to find out how in blazes they are gonna wrap this up. I know they ain't gonna put a BOW on the thing, but I do hope they will give us some damn good Fringe stories between now and the time this series ends. I was too LOST when I tried to follow LOST, Fringe definitely has a direction it is going, and more than anything in the world, I want to know how this plays out - I NEED to know! Walter Bishop is becoming a Tragic Figure like Denethor which he played in Lord of the Rings - We already know Walter can rise above his circumstances, but sometimes, they drag out the Epiphanies. So I hope within the next 2 eps Walter can start working with Peter again.

The best Fringe episode of all four seasons so far
VinceGambini23 August 2019
I keep this short as the eight reviewers before me are all spot on. I was also blown away by this episode. This is TV at its best, better anyways than most scifi movies they make these days. Everything just clicked: the intelligent story, the acting, the effects, the whole human touch, even the soundtrack (not many people notice or even comment but I do). Peter's return of course is making all the difference (his absence in the beginning of this season was sorely felt) and it appears that Walter is slowly warming to him. Fringe is back with full force.

One of the finest hours of sci-fi television
antony-124 January 2019
What a truly amazing episode. It does exactly what sci-fi does best: look at the humanity in us all through the lens of science fiction.

That no matter how much advance, how much we build cool toys... that all our advances cannot take away that we are fragile human beings.

Moral and ethical dilemmas abound, THIS is what sci-fi is about. It reminded me of the great episodes of The Outer Limits that will stay with you for ages after.

I love the arc of Fringe, it's what I think is what drives it and provides the best of the stories... but for this one episode i just wanted the arc to slip away and instead focus on the amazing character piece that was playing out with the guest actors.

Come On Walter
Hitchcoc14 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How long can Walter's recalcitrance continue? His overlooking of the scientific possibilities when he is more knowledgable than anyone because of his pique is a bit much. We see him with his furrowed brow, looking out on what others are accomplishing. Peter is calm and accepting because he's seen the whole act before in the other universe. Put all that aside and what we have is a touching story of a man and his wife, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He makes a major breakthrough as his wife fades away and it causes a rip in the fabric of time. Peter courageously works to dismantle this dangerous action.

Enough of this garbage already
truebatmantd12 March 2023
We are 71 episodes into a 100 episode series and producers of this show are still wasting time with "monster of the week" garbage because apparently they don't have any good ideas left so they keep recycling the same ideas over and over. No wonder this show's ratings took a massive plunge by mid third season because the show got boring and tiring with the same old storyline every week.

We are done with almost 3/4 of the series and it's time to actually move the main storyline forward instead of wasting time with filler episodes like this. These episodes would have been fine in the first or second season but not this late in the series.

No one cares about these storylines except for a few diehard fans that are proud to binge watch the entire series multiple times, most of whom wouldn't even know what quality TV looks like if it hit them in the face.

Finally back to some Kick Ass It was Wandering a bit!
Traxman1520 November 2011
This is what was Missing with Peter gone, the Multi Dimensional Travel! This is an Outstanding Episode, Great story, Good Acting--Very Good all around: It is interesting to see how the relationship between Olivia and Peter is now being handled--almost like there never was one at all: Olivia with her remark You're a Stranger to me etc, Very well done--as she seems to look right thru him like he's not even there! Most Cool--it is disappointing to see Astrid get less of a role, but I am sure this won't be for long--The Premise here is very well done, the FX first rate and it is a Joy to see the Best show on TV return to it's Amazing Form! I would suggest this as the Best episode of admittedly a very young season, but Still Finally It Rocks once more! Very Cool Indeed!

Cheers TRX

Killing humor, entertaining time paradox, fascinating bubbles, cheap Faraday cage, emotional story and empathic Peter
igoatabase14 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Clatto Verata Marmota Monax ! They shouldn't have summoned Groundhog Day, now we're all going to die of televisual happiness. Both killing hilarious and heartbreaking this episode added an other arc to the virtuous spiral the audience walks on. I couldn't help giggling every time Walter ignored Peter so it seems his fun factor is a constant. I really digged the concept of the time bubble. Moreover beside the well polished visual effects it's really a spherical and elemental triptych that was painted on our TV : Fire, rainbow and water. However I found Peter's electromagnetic suit very cheap and unrealistic because a Faraday cage should surround its subject entirely. Why didn't they get a real one from Walter's dusty attic ? It would have been a great homage to its inventor and appealed science freaks. As for the time jump Peter experienced it was by far my favorite part. What a brilliant reference to the film but sadly it was too short. That's the comment of a five years old boy addicted to Apollo, the candy you won't found at a store near you. More seriously even if the time paradox element reminded me of the wormhole from season 3 it's different enough and definitely fascinating. After Lost we'll see what's the next step in the time travel revolution, the film Back to the Future being one of its finest. Last but not least the story was also driven by emotions. Of course I'm referring to the Alzheimer disease because health issues motivate thousands if not millions of scientists around the globe. But of course it isn't good to sacrifice humanity for someone you love. The man wasn't selfish, he just tried his best to save his wife. The other sequences that moved me concerned Peter's nightmare and his entrance in Walter's abandoned house with Olivia. The first because it was linked to the recurrent dreams she had before his arrival. The second because the house is charged with memories like the cult Naked Pancake Show™ ! But the ending was sad because it confirmed that Peter isn't home, like Quinn Mallory in Sliders, and has no idea how to get back. Is he trapped in some sort of parallel time bubble ? Let's hope it won't explode or destroy the two universes we're familiar with !
