Impressive But a Bit Too Long
Age of Reptiles, The (1960)
** (out of 4)
If you've gone through Don Glut's dinosaur movies you're going to notice a lot of differences by the time you reach this one. The biggest difference is that this short is a lot more ambitious than the previous as the director charges up the running time to just under 20-minutes. The story takes us back to the Mesozoic Era where we see the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. After watching the dinosaurs do battle we see what happened when the great volcano erupts. This short is certainly creative and ambitious but I do feel it's just way too long for its own good. Looking at this film I can't help but be amused at how well made it is as the monsters look nice and there's no doubt that it features a very creative touch. The scenes are all set up well and this includes some footage that was shot at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The zoo footage contains real animals and it mixes in nicely with the rest of the footage. The second portion of the film shows what would have happened had dinosaurs still been around and this is where we see them attacking a city (looks like Chicago). Overall, the film runs on too long but it's certainly interesting to view but it's just not very entertaining.
