As for where the production stands in direct comparison to other found footage films well... thats difficult to accurately judge. Its infinitely inferior to films like Rec Troll Hunter The Blair Witch Project Cloverfield and Apollo 18 (erase preconceived notions instilled by detractors and dont for a single second believe its only about moon rocks) but its stronger than features like Area 407 Bigfoot The Lost Coast Tapes The Devil Inside and Paranormal Activity 4. Therefore its probably safe to say this one resides somewhere in the middle of the pack. You arent likely to love it but you probably wont hate it outright.

Jay Lee may be best known as the director of Zombie Strippers, but he has a new psychological horror movie, Alyce Kills, that is out on DVD next week. We had the opportunity to have Jay take part in our Q&A series and he told us about getting back to psychological horror, working with Jade Dornfeld, and the possibility of us seeing a Zombie Strippers sequel:
Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with us. Alyce Kills is very different from a movie like Zombie Strippers. What made you want to go into this more serious/psychological direction?
Jay Lee: Actually it was the other way around. Alyce Kills is more of a return for me from the detour that was the over-the-top gorefest comedy horror films. The latter was just better business (my prior psychological thriller that actually premiered at Sundance is indeed a...

If you thought Area 407 was a "one and done" sorta film, you're wrong. The 2012 IFC Films release has spawned a sequel - Area 407: Part II - and this one combines found footage, dinosaurs and zombies. Because why the hell not, right?
The original found the survivors of a plane crash trying fending off deadly predators in a government testing area.
The sequel continues the story with said survivors "fighting for their lives in even more terrifying circumstances as more of the horrifying government conspiracy unfolds."
Zombies Strippers director Jay Lee sits at the helm of this entry. Trailer within!

Can Area 407 Part 2 outshine the disaster that was Area 407 Lets hope so The trailer looks improved thats for sure Wait a minute... theres a sequel to Area 407 heading our way Really Area 407 arguably the worst found footage film to be released last year Someone thought it a good idea to bring a second chapter to that shitstorm Someone needs to be reprimanded in a major major way. If you missed the first film intentionally or not you did yourself an epic favor. The flick was absolutely terrible in every way imaginable.

When it comes to found footage films, I’ve pretty much run the course. I’ve seen all the triple-a Hollywood titles (Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity) and nearly every straight to DVD wannabe released in the last decade: Bigfoot: The Lost Cost Tapes, Area 407, Grave Encounters 1 and 2, The Amityville Haunting and a dozen more. To put things bluntly, most of them are terrible. It’s the cheapest way to make a horror movie so it makes sense that filmmakers would flock to it and the outcome is handfuls of mediocre, jump scare ridden, terribly written, poorly acted horror movies.
I am happy to say that The Frankenstein Theory does an excellent job at avoiding those downfalls. Now while many of the advertisements you see come tagged with “from the makers of The Last Exorcism,” this is a bit of a stretch. This is Andrew Weiner’s first foray into...

Another year winds down, and it's time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2012's horror offerings. We're giving you ten different lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers. We've also compiled them to come up with the year's overall winners and losers.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Give us your own lists in the comments section below. We want to hear what you thought of the year in which we dodged the Mayan apocalypse but find our beloved genre facing some dark days as violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc., are coming under increased scrutiny following recent events.
But back to the matter at hand; we averaged out the top and bottom five vote getters on everyone's lists, and here are the results:

Every time I feel beaten down by a rash of mediocre new "found footage" horror flicks, I have to remind myself that Hey, I actually do like this gimmick. (Yes, still!) If I have to struggle through Area 407 and Crowsnest and Hollow to find buried treasures like [Rec], Paranormal Activity, and Grave Encounters, then that's just fine with me. But just as this "Diy" approach to storytelling lends itself exceedingly well to lazy first-timers with no ideas and no money, it can also evolve into something quite novel and creepy when handled by smart, clever, and/or experienced filmmakers. Thankfully that's what has happened in the case of The Bay, a simple enough horror flick that could have easily become just another chintzy eyesore were it not for some clever writing, crafty editing, excellent special effects, and (best of all) a seasoned filmmaker who may by new to the horror game,...

With so many different horror classifications now in existence and so many different aspects to discuss, guest writer Remy Carreiro and I decided to start a weekly column in which we’ll hack and slash our way through a bevy of terrifying topics. Zombies pound against our door, vampires fly overhead, killers lurk around every dimly lit corner, but we’re here to make sense of it all. Wait, is that Bruce Campbell? Nope, drats. This is it then, Nato and Remy’s Last Stand.
But who are we? Since we’re all about horror, what better way to introduce ourselves than with our own eulogies?!
Remy Carreiro:
Though few people knew he was twelve years old due to one of those weird diseases that makes you look older than you are, most knew that Remy had a real penchant for living life. In his short time here on Earth,...

Monster Pictures from the United Kingdom continues to snap up horror titles. Their latest acquisition is The Inside. This is another "found footage" style feature, which focuses on one character, a video camera and a "supernatural terror." Friends and creatures of the dark come to blows August 26th at the Film 4 Frightfest in London. The film will have its World Premiere at this renowned film festival, as well. There seems to be a resurgence in the "found footage" style of filmmaking. Arguably developed by Eduardo Sanchez in his 1999 hit The Blair Witch Project, this shooting style would find itself extremely popular after the release of Paranormal Activity in 2007. Since then, there have been several more films of this style including: Atrocious (2010), the abysmal Area 407 (2012), the excellent and soon to release V/H/S (David Bruckner and co.) Also, Busted Knuckle Productions is set to release their first film in...

Alright, I have to ask – Why do so many fantastic films get caught in studio limbo while utter garbage is seemingly churned out on a daily basis? Why did it take three long years of anticipation before I could get my hands on a copy of Kerry Prior’s The Revenant? In 2009 alone, Prior demolished the New York City Horror Film Festival by winning Best Director, having both David Anders and Chris Wylde tie for Best Actor, scoring the Audience Choice Award, and finished by capturing Best Feature honors. Yet a film like Area 407 got a full featured release first?!
Well, after a three-year wait I was finally given a chance to see what all the hoopla was about, and boy can I say the wait was worth it. Horror fans everywhere, heed my recommendation and add Prior’s film to your must see list immediately, you’ll thank yourself afterward.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Midnight. Directors/writers: Dale Fabrigar, Everette Wallin. Cast: Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester and James Lyons. There should be a law banning first time feature filmmakers from using the found footage style of filmmaking. Otherwise, a film such as Area 407 aka Tape 407 is created. This film is basically eighty plus minutes spent with a fourteen year old girl holding a shaky camera. She and her friends love to scream into the microphone while capturing too many shots of people's legs. Keep the camera higher ladies. There is no music to accompany the film and all of the dialogue was ad-libbed over a five day shooting period. Most films are shot between 15 to 20 days, but not this one. Characters stumble through a weak script and Area 407 gets the much deserved Worst Film of 2012 nomination on 28Dla. And...

Towards the end of last week we revealed the new poster for new found footage creature feature 'Area 407' (previously known as 'Tape 407'). The Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin helmed horror flick unleashed a very familiar looking poster which has got to have been heavily influenced by George A Romero's 'Diary of the Dead' one-sheet. Thankfully however this new poster is a tad more original although it does sort of scream 'Jurassic Park III' to me. Abigail Schrader, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Samantha Lester, Ken Garcia, Samantha Sloyan, Brendan Patrick Connor, Everette Wallin and Jude Gerard Prest all star. Check out the new poster below and catch it in select theatres and on VOD in the Us this Friday!...

After debuting the first official poster for Area 407 last week, a second one has arrived, and of course we have it for you right here. The film will be available nationwide on IFC Midnight cable VOD and digital outlets and in select theaters on April 27, 2012.
Directed by Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin, Area 407 stars Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Brendan Patrick Connor, Ken Garcia, Samantha Sloyan, Everette Wallin and Jude Gerard Prest. The film was written by Robert Shepyer.

Opening in theaters on April 27, the movie stars Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Brendan Patrick Connor, Ken Garcia and Samantha Sloyan. The small group that survived, some critically wounded, had every reason to believe that help was on the way. After all,...

An airplane crashes on a seemingly deserted island filled with danger, intrigue, and mystery. Now there’s an idea that’s never been done before! Below you’ll find two new posters for Dale Fabrigar’s “Area 407″, a film that was once known around these parts as “Tape 407″. The latest trailer for the flick only arrived yesterday (March 20th), so it’s not overly surprisingly that this part of promotional pieces have shown up to help keep the ol’ Internet buzz machine chugging right along. And while I’m always quick to poke fun at the film’s premise, I don’t think it looks all that bad. Honestly! Don’t believe me? Have a look at the trailer for yourself. Wiseguy. “Area 407″ stars Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Brendan Patrick Connor, Ken Garcia, Samantha Sloyan, Everette Wallin, and Jude Gerard Pres. IFC Midnight...

Another day, another Found Footage horror movie gets snatched up to be released on VOD with a (contractually obligated) limited theatrical run. So what else is new? Todd already posted a previous trailer for the movie (back when it was still called “Tape 407″), and now comes official news that IFC Midnight have snatched up North American rights to Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin’s thriller, including the spiffy new name change. I guess given the spacey-monsters-on-the-loose premise, “Area 407″ just sounds more sci-fi-y. (You know, “Area 51″ and such.) Area 407 features lost footage too real for reality and too disturbing for fiction. The film opens with two teenagers flying from New York to Los Angeles on New Years Eve. Their nightmare begins when their plane hits extreme turbulence mid-flight. The relentless weather attack causes panic and terror amongst the passengers until the plane ultimately crashes in a remote government-testing area. The...

Abigail Schrader, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Samantha Lester, Ken Garcia, Samantha Sloyan, Brendan Patrick Connor, Everette Wallin and Jude Gerard Prest all star in 'Area 407' and you can check out the new poster as well as a cheeky look at the fore-mentioned 'Diary of the Dead' poster. Tape 407, along the lines of The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, and Apollo 18 is a horror faux documentary featuring "lost footage" — described in the film's press release as "too real for reality and too disturbing for fiction." Tape 407 opens with a group of people, including one pesky teenager with a camera, flying from New York to Los Angeles on New Year's Eve. Things go wrong when their plane hits extreme turbulence mid-flight, which leads to wild panic among the passengers until the plane crashes in a remote area. The bloody and disoriented survivors then discover they're not alone in the darkness. Unknown predators relentlessly start pursuing them. Unbeknownst to the victims, their planed crashed in a Us government-testing area, and those predators belong to the government's top-secret Mesa Experiment. Tape 407 was directed by Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin, from a screenplay by Fabrigar, Wallin, and Robert Shepyer.
