Comparing this to Tucker and Dale isn't fair but that is the type of movie it is and is not as good as that one.
cosmo_tiger26 February 2014
"Just one more thing and it's all over and we can do whatever we want with our lives." Todd (Labine) wants everything to be just perfect at the family cottage where he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman). Things are going to plan until his brother and his girlfriend show up. After an attempt to get them to leave goes horribly wrong Todd's brother winds up dead. When Cammie finds out she has one solution, kill his girlfriend as well and no one will ever know. The plan is perfect until they return to the cabin and see a party happening...with guests invited by his brother. I was looking forward to this one mainly because the slasher- comedy movie Tucker and Dale vs Evil was so great I was hoping it would be like that. This did have funny parts in this but overall this wasn't nearly as funny as Tucker and Dale was. Much like that one though this is a very dark comedy and you laugh at things you shouldn't laugh at but the problem for me was that even though the actions were way over the top the actors seemed to play the movie straight. This little aspect made the movie lose some of the laughs that it could have gotten. Comparing this to Tucker and Dale isn't fair but that is the type of movie it is and is not as good as that one. Overall, disappointing but mainly because of my expectations. Not as funny as I was expecting. I give this a B-.

Funny comedy with a dark and morbid twist...
paul_haakonsen13 July 2017
When I stumbled upon "Cottage Country" I had not heard about the movie, so I didn't know what to expect from it. I took a look at the movie's cover and must say that I was instantly interested in the movie. Then I read the synopsis and saw that Tyler Labine was starring in the movie, so my interest was further peaked. So naturally I decided to give "Cottage Country" a go.

The cast in "Cottage Country" was quite good, and they really managed to get together a great ensemble of acting performers, and there was a great chemistry between the various performers. It was really nice to see Tyler Labine again in a comedy much in the same genre as "Tucker & Dale vs Evil". Dan Petronijevic added a great comedy element to the movie with his character. Lucy Punch was really nicely cast for the very odd character Masha. And of course it was also nice to have an actor like Kenneth Welsh show up in the movie.

"Cottage Country" had a very interesting character gallery to bring the story to life on the screen. And the cast hired to portray the various roles and characters were doing good jobs with their assigned characters. And the brotherly rivalry between Tood and Salinger was just great and resulted in some hilarious scenes.

The dialogue in the movie was well-written and very suitable for the characters. And I really liked the Marsha character's dialogue, because she was just so extreme and so out there that it was hard not to be amused constantly.

There are some really good laughs to be had from watching "Cottage Country", and if you like comedies with a dark and twisted sense of humor then you will most definitely enjoy and want to watch this movie.

The special effects and make-up effects were actually quite good and they served the movie quite well. Now, this isn't a special effects galore like many Hollywood movies ten

Writer Jeremy Boxen had managed to put together a very enjoyable story that had some great laughs, some memorable moments, and very likable characters. And director Peter Wellington was doing a great job of telling the story in a great transition from script to screen.

This was indeed a very dark and twisted comedy, and it was without a doubt quite well worth taking the time and effort to sit down to watch it, and I am genuinely happy that I did, because I was thoroughly entertained by the movie.

Most Realistic Brother-Fight Scene EVER!!!
TheJonesBones11 March 2022
No matter what else you hear or see in this film, you MUST admire one of the most realistic brother-fight scenes EVER!!! As with most of the fun, the plot really gets started at about 18mins when Todd Chipowski (Tyler Labine) defiles his Bohemian brother's head phones (Salinger played by Dan Petronijevic).

Those were three hundred dollar headphones, Todd!

Pinwheel slaps, girly-squeals, owies and, finally, an axe delivered Cain-style will always resolve any brotherly disturbance!

Of course, Todd's super-eager and hyper-well-meaning fiancé, Cammie (Malin Akerman) will simply not allow a harmless filicide to interfere with her life plans, while Salinger's significant other, Masha (Lucy Punch), has truly alien plans for everyone (perhaps given her family history of drug-fueled orgies).

So, pack your kit and call shotgun, you're on your way to a relaxing weekend at the family lake house! Hey, stop touching me!

Not what you might expect, but in a good way!
Dr_Sagan8 July 2013
If you miss the tagline of this movie, expect to be surprised!

Seeing the first 20 minutes of the movie you might think that you are watching something between a romantic comedy and a National Lampoon's kind of film. Todd (Tyler Labine) and Cammie (Malin Akerman) are an unmarried couple, trying to get a short break of their hardworking daily routine by going to Todd's family cottage for the weekend. Todd is also planning to propose to Cammie in the most romantic place he can think of, by the lake!

The troubles began when Todd's loafer brother (Dan Petronijevic) and his weird girlfriend (Lucy Punch) arrive at the cottage without a notice! The two brothers can't get along, they fight and what happens next is the beginning of a nightmare. The viewer might think for a moment that is seeing a dream sequence or Todd's wishful thinking! Unfortunately everything is true and Todd and Cammie are following a path far more difficult that they can handle, especially Todd.

The movie has a few awkward moments and you aren't sure what to expect next. Malin Akerman gives a good performance as the determined woman-with-a-plan Cammie.

Overall: Recommended.

A passable film which doesn't quite know what it wants to be
GrassCrown10 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to watch this film because I'm a big fan of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and absolutely loved Tyler Labine's performance in it. In Cottage Country Labine plays Todd who is sort of similar to the character he was in Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil though he's nowhere near as funny in this. Malin Akerman's acting was pretty good in this but I didn't feel the kind of chemistry between them as I did between Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk in Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Todd's parents' are really good and they bring some good tension to the movie. Lucy Punch is pretty terrible though.

The movie's main problem is that it doesn't quite know what it tries to be. At the start you think it might be a sort of a romantic comedy, at times it's a dark comedy and partly it focuses on the crime story. The laughs come mostly from the few shocks the movie delivers and not so much from the writing.

Some of the plot devices were a bit gimmicky, especially the part where Todd suddenly starts seeing dead people and telling secrets to people who shouldn't know them. The Jewish kid was also a bit over the top with his committed detective work during the party.

In the end, it's a watchable film if you have nothing else to do but I wouldn't go out of my way to get my hands on it. It's a shame though because the movie's premise had good potential to it. With a bit different script and better writing the movie could've been much better.

How Far Will You Go?
shawnblackman21 October 2016
A horror comedy that has a man taking his girlfriend up to the cottage to propose. He gets a surprise visit from his brother and his girlfriend. Trying to get him to leave the two brothers end up fighting leaving one of the brothers with an axe in his neck. The fiancé helps cover up the crime so she can still get married. Before the brother is killed he invites a whole mess of people up for a party which of course adds to festivities. Anyone who gets suspicious ends up dead as well.

A pretty good dark humorous flick where anything can happen and it usually does. It is amazing how far some people will go to hide things. Sometimes it felt like American Psycho meets Three's Company. You will be laughing and getting shocked all at the same time. Well worth the watch. Check it out

Very not nice things
movieman_kev8 January 2014
Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Tyler Labine (Reaper) are Cammie and Todd, one of those awful couples that have cutesy nicknames for each other. They plan on spending a momentous romantic vacation at Todd's parents cabin by the lake, but when his slacker brother shows up with his girlfriend this go quickly from bad to worse,

A proper black comedy needs to mix the comedy with the macabre. Look at Heathers for black comedy done right. Hell look at Very Bad Things, a film that this one has a passing resemblance to. Both the aforementioned films work because of this mixture. Cottage Country does not. The dark moments aren't funny, the funny scenes not particularly dark. The film is passable entertainment but only marginally so. It's not terrible, just not funny and overlong.

Surprised!
dkrisjanis1 February 2020
I adore Tyler Labine, so when I saw this movie on Amazon Prime, I decided to watch it without knowing much of anything about it. It was really surprising! As the story unfolds, things eventually go sideways in a way that I did not see coming.

Cottage country is not what one would expect
jordondave-2808524 April 2023
(2013) Cottage Country PSYCHOLOGICAL COMEDY DRAMA THRILLER

Straight-to-DVD movie with devoted, working stiff, Todd Chipowski (Tyler Labine) planning a nice quiet getaway from his stressful job with a pre-planned marriage proposal to his fiancé, Cammie Ryan (Malin Akerman) at their secluded cottage. Except that things are not going accordingly to plan as soon as his obnoxiously loudmouth, inconsiderate brother shows up along with his hooker-looking girlfriend, resorting him to do very extreme things. The dark comedy aspects is unfunny and lousy, with the end of this movie making zero sense, and so is this movie. Bomb.

Accidental Evils ◆≈≈6.5/10≈≈◆
Thrill_KillZ2 September 2013
From the producers of "Hobo With a Shotgun" comes Cottage Country. The film's lead being Tyline Labine, who you will probably recognize from the film "Tucker and Dale vs Evil", a film where he both figuratively & literally killed it in the role as Dale. Labine returns to a film filled with accident evil, not quite as good as Tucker and Dale, but a fun romp

Here Labine plays the somewhat more refined role of Todd Chipowski, a man who has planned out the perfect week long getaway at his parent's lake house with his longtime girlfriend Cammie(Malin Akerman). Todd has planned a bit more than just the vacation, he and Cammie have plans to paddle out to the lake's remote island and find the perfect spot for Todd to pop the question. Before they even get settled in, Todd's rowdy, obnoxious brother Salinger(Dan Petronijevic) shows up with his sleazy girlfriend Masha in tow(Lucy Punch). When Todd tells Sal to hit the road they end up in a scuffle which ends up with the better part of an ax head buried into his Sal's neck. When Cammie hears the news, she decides that nothing is going stop their engagement and they continue with their plans on the island. Little do they know that Sal has invited all his friends over for a big bash that very night and they return to find a house full of strangers and a whole lot of explaining, lying and diverting to do as to the whereabouts of Sal and why his car is in the driveway.

It has been done before effectively in numerous dark comedies, but this film has a fresh feel and once it fully gets going, will have you laughing a good deal as well as squirming in your seat. One great surprise for me was the effective zig-zag in the film's final minutes, it does something unpredictable and leaves you with a certain upbeat sense of karma. I think it's a fine choice for some good laughs and some great spurts of uncomfortable tension which I recommend if that's what you're in the mood for.

Disappointing
ansarm30 August 2013
This movie tries really hard to be funny. I am sure the cast and crew had a lot of fun making this. Unfortunately you had to be one of them to enjoy anything. After the success of "tuker and dale" the expectations for the cast had been high. Tyler Labine's presence made me think this might be good. Its obvious him and all the actors did their jobs fine but it just didn't gel. Didn't draw a single laugh from me. Did get a few whimpers. The story is so shallow that anything I say will be considered a spoiler. In a nutshell, don't waste your time here. Rent Tucker and Dale, even Hatchet 2 has some funny stuff. I have to make up 10 lines of text for a review. So here goes, this movie is not funny. I am sorry for all the people who worked hard to make it. And I hate posting bad reviews, but this had to be said.

Cottage Country Warning: Spoilers
If ever a film deserved a higher IMDb ratings it's this one, five-point-anything is far too lol for most films that get it and this one is the same, the acting is solid, the plot equally so, I liked everything about it. I liked it almost as much as, but not quite as much as Tucker and Dale vs Evil, that really had a good plot.

But yes in conclusion this was much better than everyone says and is likely then underrated.

"Oh Brother, Where Are You?"
Kamurai2516 November 2020
Good watch, could watch again, and can recommend.

I'm not a big fan of any of the cast, but this is a great concept, and they actually do a great job in not only their roles, but creating the atmosphere needed to sell the situation.

It really is an ever evolving puzzle of dilemmas all the way to the end of the movie.

The biggest problem I have with it is the social-economic concept of getting married they throw in. A moral quandry of time invested vs legal responsibility sort of throws off the pacing of the movie a bit, but adds to the humor as I imagine is intended.

The ghost of Banquo!
trcmiddleton25 January 2014
If you know Macbeth, you can have a lot of fun seeing how the basic plot is lifted from that play. The ambitious woman drives her compliant mate to pursue the unthinkable, and having done so, both are haunted by the horror of their deeds. Mix in a little contemporary hilarity for the times, but you can't deny it's the Scottish play. It would have been cool to have read a few reviews that touched on this delightful parallel. It's like seeing 10 Things I Hate about You and finding a classic plot.

I had forgotten the name of the movie, and was searching "movies based on Macbeth" to no avail. I know there was the word cottage or cabin, but beyond that, couldn't think of a single actor's name or anything. Thanks IMDb for documenting everything!

IT'S NOT PORN ITS ART
nogodnomasters18 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
EARLY PLOT SPOILER 20 minutes into film.

Cammie (Malin Akerman) is excited about going to the cottage by the lake with her workaholic boyfriend Todd (Tyler Labine). She has discovered the engagement ring he has hidden and knows what is coming. Alas, the family cottage is shared by his overly crude brother Sal (Dan Petronijevic) and foreign, off and on girlfriend Masha (Lucy Punch). Cammie wants them gone. Todd confronts Sal and drives an ax between their relationship leading to what could have been a fairly decent dark comedy.

While there were funny scenes, the humor quality was uneven. It couldn't maintain the level of interest. Sal, was not only unlikeable to his brother and GF, he was made unlikeable to the audience. Dov (Benjamin Ayres) should have added to the humor, instead added to the boredom. They needed a colorful character to replace him. Likewise all the support crowd was fairly lame.

Okay rental at best. I recommend the British dark horror comedy "The Cottage" instead. Sorry Canada.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex. No nudity.

Oh, Brother!
adi_200210 February 2014
Cammie and Todd are a couple who is trying to find peace and quiet and they go at a cabin in the middle of the woods to have a few days of relaxation. All good until Todd's brother along with his girlfriend Masha arrives at the chalet. They don't realize that are bothering them and after the girls are gone for a little hike Cammie tells Todd to convince his brother to leave them alone. They fight and Todd accidentally kills Salinger and covers his murder. After Masha and Cammie return he tells her what he has just done and Cammie encourages him to get rid of Masha also. They are dumping the part of their bodies after they cut them in the lake and are surprised when they arrive back that a party in the middle of progress is at their house and comprehend that Salinger invite them to come but he wasn't sure if he really made the announcement.

Now the two must behave normal and not to give suspicious to the guest and make them believe that they don't know where the missing couple is. Although this should be easy the situation complicates when Todd has some hallucinations with his dead brother and attracts attention with his unusual behavior. One guest specifically becomes involved and want to find out the truth but end up having the same faith as his friends. When police arrives the couple must play innocent and soon Todd's parent are coming to the cottage but for how long will they manage to hide the reality for those around them?

I catalog this movie to be a black comedy although there are only a few scenes where you laugh for some seconds and in rest it's a little bit silly but still is a good way to spend you Sunday evening.

Boringgggggg !!
siddhanth_april1510 July 2013
Firstly i would like to make some clarifications regarding the genre of this movie.I don't think this movie should be put under the category of action or comedy or thriller, if i was the owner of this title i would have put it under the category of "BOREDOM". This movie definitely fails to thrill and there was hardly one scene which made me laugh, So if anyone is expecting to have a good laugh or thrill by watching this movie "Cottage Country" is not the right movie to watch. There is nothing different or new in this movie, this movie is nothing but bits and pieces of other horror movies put together. Tyler Labine's performance is the only positive factor in this movie and that's the reason why i am rating it with 3 stars and not 1. My advice to those who are thinking about picking this movie is to omit this movie and pick another.

Wacky Weekend
tesswysko1 February 2019
Well the movie got off to a very interesting start. Good character development, I got invested in the characters enjoyed their personalities and I watched it at night in the hopes of falling asleep to it but I was so interested that I just couldn't however, about halfway through they pulled a 180. They completely changed the characters personalities the pace of the show and it's like they just wanted to hurry up and sew the whole thing shut, and completely lost all sense of creativity, so they just changed the characters on their personality to fit what would work to just end it. I felt completely robbed.

i thought it would be much worse
neosakoma7 July 2013
First of all this is a noir comedy. I think it deserves a 5 out of 10 , which means it's almost watchable. Don't expect a silly comedy , you'll be disappointed. It has lightweight psychological drama in it. Nice scenery and the music background was OK.

In the start of the film i thought Tyler Labine was a wannabe Jack Black but he deserves a little more.

Malin Akerman was acting great in this movie which i didn't see it coming in the beginning of the film (Warning: it is not good if she reminds you of your girlfriend).

Lucy Punch was terrible. It is real tragedy to see her in a comedy and it is not the first time this happens. It is definitely better to watch it without even reading the storyline.

Recommended time to watch: Sunday evening

Mildly funny and needed more "horror"
Matt_Layden22 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Todd brings his girlfriend up to the family cottage with the intention of proposing to her. Problems arise when his loser of a brother, Salinger shows up with his on/off girlfriend and ruins everything. Things go from bad to worse when the two brothers get into a pushing match, which ends with Salinger dead. Now Todd must keep it together before other people find out.

Cottage Country takes awhile before it finds the groove it wants to be in. This happens once the brother is killed. Everything leading up to that is really hit and miss comedy and set up. Labine doesn't seem comfortable, Akerman doesn't have much to do and Punch is incredibly annoying. Once the conflict arises, meaning the dead brother, the film finally gets into the right balance of comedy and horror...even though it goes lite on the horror.

Labine plays Todd, and everyman that people tend to walk over, be it his boss, brother and even wife. There is a bit of Tucker & Dale vs Evil intention here, with the character and overall theme in the film, but Cottage Country fails to deliver the laughs and gore. Instead we get chuckles here and there, mainly from the cast and the situation they are in. Akerman surprised me here. She held her own as the marriage obsessed wife. I forgot she could do comedy well.

The film tries this balancing act, but never quiet finds the footing. There are oddly placed scenes in which Todd sees his dead brother talking to him, but this adds nothing to the story and doesn't happen enough. There are only two scenes we get to see this interaction and decay of his psychological state. There were some tense and funny moments when the couple were trying their best to keep the murders under wraps, but not one memorable scene that stands out as really funny. The film had a decent premise (although it was a bit of a stretch) and it didn't really seem to take any chances. I would have appreciated it more if it had.

Cottage Country is a decent Canadian comedy horror that is lite on both. If you can get past the awful choice of having Lucy Punch do an odd accent for cheap laughs, and you can appreciate the ludicrous aspect of the premise and these horrible characters, then give Cottage Country a look. Just don't expect much, you'll leave a little bit surprised.

I like the stars, the film, not so much
catdaddyd7 August 2022
I really like Tyler Labine and Malin Akerman, she was great in the Heartbreak Kid, he's usually great in everything. But this just didn't hit the spot. I watched it years ago and again recently and can't say I ever care to see it again. I like Lucy Punch as well and she a few funny lines. The movie and story had potential but just missed on all accounts.

Ingenious!
qz129 October 2013
This is so funny - I think I laughed so hard I couldn't even hear what's next.

Don't let the bad reviews fool you. You've really got to have a sense of humor to appreciate the multiple layers of parodies on a bad relationship. The many things our other 'destined' half tries to make us do (or special someone in your life who has a plan for you).

The twist ending is also great! Although a bit predictable.

Malin delivers one of her best portraits as the neurotic thirty-four year-old driven mad by societal expectations. Tyler is not bad, but there's something about him that makes him completely forgettable.

The rest of the cast is all right except for Lucy.

It's great! A rare find!

Best laid plans
kosmasp1 May 2014
As always you can plan as much as you want to (be it the romantic kind or the other kind), there is a big possibility things won't play as thought they did. This is true to every character in this story. Even if you know what the inciting incident is, it might still surprise you, because of the impact it has and the power it has on screen.

Malin Ackerman has a lot of fun playing the lead female role, though her character is a bit of plain overall. But the humor is as dark as it gets and there is a lot of coincidences to swallow too. If you can live with all those things, you will have a comedy that does not take any prisoners and is decent enough to entertain

Cottage Carnage
thesar-22 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
While I already had a distaste for overly spoiler movie trailers, Cottage Country pushed me over the edge. (And just a warning, if you're not into spoilers, like I'm not, this HAS TO HAVE a bare minimum of some, so fair warning. If you're like me, I would just watch this movie first – and not the trailer, and then read my take.)

My friend recommended this to me because he knows I have a "thing" for Tyler Labine. Granted, he's a TV-show killer and hasn't made that big of a splash at the cinema – it takes me several movies to get someone to know who I'm talking about when I try and describe him to someone who's never heard of him, but I'm glad that funny (and sexy) beast is still making films.

So, that friend asked me to watch the two-minute trailer of a movie I've never heard about before. I got one-minute in, and there's one major spoiler of what's to happen in the movie. I stopped the preview and did watch the movie, but all the way through to that scene which happens at just past the 19-minute mark, I kept expecting it.

I am NOT going to ruin it here, as it was for me, but you would never see this coming had you avoided all trailers, plot synopsis or reviews. Sad. It would've been a deep shocker.

As for the movie on its own merit and avoiding my irrelevant problem, it's an okay film about a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who, after a stressful work life, take a week out at the guy's parent's cottage in order for him to propose. Sadly, unexpectedly and uninvitedly, his Pauly Shore-type brother and dumb girlfriend crash his plans and decide to have a party at the cottage. The boyfriend, Labine's Todd, is a wimp while his girlfriend wears the pants and it's up to Todd to evict the brother in order to continue with their special weekend.

Well, it was a Very Bad Things week of sorts with a slight Hangover. Will Todd be able to bypass the big party, the uninvited guests, his demanding soon-to-be fiancée, that awful don't-touch-a-lady, too-many-questions dude and go back to normal?

I will say the movie was well shot, the actors – all of them, gave their all, some of the lines were intentionally funny and the scenery was crisp and nice. But, sadly, the movie wasn't that original, and because of which, you expected a lot of what happens to appear. Also, it wasn't as funny as the dark humor suggests and the movie introduces scenes from a certain American Werewolf from London that honestly had no place. So much so, they were a blatant rip-off.

A barely recommendation…if you're a Tyler Labine and good-looking locales fan.

Average, And Nothing More
gavin694229 April 2014
Todd (Labine) wants everything to be just perfect at the family cottage where he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman). But things go awry with the arrival of Todd's slacker brother Salinger (Petronijevic) and his free-spirited girlfriend Masha (Punch).

Tyler Labine in a cottage and someone gets killed? Could this be the sequel to "Tucker and Dale"? Sadly, no. He is cast here as basically the equivalent of a poor man's Canadian Jack Black. A lucky loser, perhaps? Is this romance? Drama? Comedy? Horror? Despite zombie ghosts, it is actually not the latter. Drama maybe, comedy in some parts. And the romance is a stretch.

I have no strong feelings about this film one way or the other. A good way to waste time, I suppose, though there are many other films out there that could fill the same time better.
