Desperate for Russia's raw materials, especially oil, Hitler ordered his southern army groups to conquer the oil fields in the Caucasas region, then diverted some of his forces to attack the Russian logistical center (and namesake of Russia's communist leader), Stalingrad. Both sides committed a million men to the meat grinder of a battle that eventually turned the tide of the German invasion.
