Macy (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and Marcia Cross (You) have signed on to star in Exit Right, a new indie that veteran documentary filmmaker Thomas A. Morgan will direct from his own script for the London-based Garrick Street Productions and Square Zero Films.

Slowly but surely, rom-coms are making their comeback on screen. Mostly recently, it comes in the form of The Avenue’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “One True Loves,” starring Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey. And really, Bracey would argue that romances are “some of the best movies you can watch.”
“One True Loves” follows Soo’s character Emma as she grapple with the loss of Jesse (Bracey), and finds love in the form of her childhood best friend Sam (Simu Liu). But, when Jesse suddenly calls her one day after being missing for four years, Emma must choose between her husband and her fiancé. And so, an impossible love triangle ensues.
Bracey may have broken onto the scene in action movies like “Point Break” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” but in the last few years, he’s also solidified himself as a rom-com heartthrob. He starred alongside Emma Watson in Netflix’s “Holidate,...

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” (Universal/$19.99), his final film at the studio before moving to Warner Bros. Discovery , was #1 on all VOD charts in its first week in release. This comes, as usual for Universal titles, after its third weekend in theaters. By contrast, the director’s 2021 “Old” waited more than two months.
It held off a challenge from “The Whale” (A24/$19.99), which took second place at iTunes and Vudu, and #4 at Google Play. Darren Aronofsky’s film, fresh off Brendan Fraser’s SAG Best Actor award, spent more than two months as a theatrical exclusive.

Michelle and Allen have reached the point in their relationship to take the next steps toward marriage. Thinking it is a good idea to invite their parents to finally meet, they set a dinner and make it a family affair. To everyone’s surprise, the affair takes on a whole new meaning as the parents already know each other all too well — they’ve been cheating on their spouses for months… with each other. Trapped in this precarious predicament, they try to hide their dalliances from the kids while confronting their spouses’ lovers head-on. Let the games begin.

It took a price reduction, but Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” (Universal/$5.99) is finally getting some significant viewing. With it down to standard VOD cost ($5.99) rather than its initial home viewing cost of $19.99, it is listed on the three charts below for the first time. And it got above #4 anywhere, hitting #1 on iTunes.
The film has been a major box office disappointment, with only $17 million in domestic grosses and $30 million worldwide with virtually all its take already in. That makes its performance as a home revenue asset that much more important.
Its low level of theatrical interest suggested that it might be a challenge to reach viewers willing to pay its initial premium cost. But it is now at a price where its awards attention, strong reviews, and of course Spielberg’s reputation have all boosted it as expected.

Multiple Oscar-nominated films opened, expanded, or returned this weekend without much box-office impact. Best Picture Oscar nominee “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) took #1 for its seventh weekend (and likely its last; M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” should replace it next weekend). It fell a bit off pace over the past two weeks, but it should still supplant fellow Best Picture contender “Top Gun: Maverick” as the biggest 2022 domestic release. James Cameron’s film stands at 620 million domestic, 2.117 billion total worldwide.
Best Animated Feature Nominee “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal) was #2, but that’s been consistently strong performer. At #3 was the Academy-ignored and critically derided “A Man Called Otto” (Sony). With 6,750,000 million in 3,957 theaters, it is the dominant film for older audiences despite its absence from the race.

Even on a specialty level, horror just works post-pandemic with the latest pop from a strong showing by a trio of films, Fear and Infinity Pool, released this weekend, and Skinamarink in week three.
Fear hails from Deon and Roxanne Avent Taylor’s Hidden Empire Film Group, the all-Black production company behind cult hit Meet The Blacks (2016) and The House Next Door: Meet The Blacks 2, released into a shaky theatrical marketplace in June of 2021 that made nearly 3 million U.S. Fear, directed by Deon Taylor, was self-distributed by Hidden Empire Releasing on 974 screens, opening to an estimated 1.28 million for a per-screen average of 1,315. The breakdown: Fri: 466.9k (includes 132k in Thursday sneaks); Sat: 504k; Sun: estimated 310k.

Susan Sarandon is opening up about her parenting style. The same month that Sarandon’s daughter, Eva Amurri, described her upbringing as “a circus,” the 76-year-old actress responded to the claim in an interview with Et’s Matt Cohen.
Amurri, 37, made her statement on TikTok, explaining, “People in the industry, who grew up in the industry, sometimes liken the experience to growing up in the circus.”
“You kind of spend these really surreal periods of time really closely intertwined with other people… You become so, so close almost like family. And then one of the things that’s really disorienting about the acting world is then, when the project is done, a lot of times everyone just goes their separate ways and you kind of just disappear back into real life,” she said. “It can be really sad sometimes… It’s always a unique experience to grow up that way.

Michael Jacobs’ romantic comedy attempts to present a universal portrait of the difficulties faced by couples young and old, those just starting out and those married for many years. So it’s ironic that Maybe I Do, which features such stellar screen veterans as Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and William H. Macy plus relative youngsters Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey, has exactly the opposite effect. Instead of relating to the characters onscreen, you marvel at how they all look so good. The dominant message isn’t that all couples have issues, but rather that movie stars age so much better than the rest of us.
Adding to the dissonance is that the film represents reunions for many of the cast members — and that we’ve seen them together before, most of the time in much better films. Gere and Sarandon have played married couples in Shall We Dance...

Even if you walked into “Maybe I Do” knowing nothing about its pre-production provenance, it likely would not take long for you to discern, from the clockwork pacing, punchline-littered dialogue and frequent proscenium-arch framing, that this formulaic but fitfully entertaining trifle is based on a stage play. Indeed, for those viewers who recall the heyday of celebrity-driven dinner theater, the film may spark memories of wolfing down prime rib and knocking back mixed drinks before chuckling at the antics of aging and/or under-employed film and TV stars in everything from comedies by Neil Simon (or Neil Simon wannabes) to Broadway flops that enjoyed extended afterlives in the hinterland.
As it turns out, writer-director Michael Jacobs based “Maybe I Do” on his own “Cheaters,” a comedy that lasted scarcely a month on Broadway in 1978, and was most notable at the time for being the work of a playwright who was then only 22 years old.

With Valentine’s Day just weeks away, many new romantic movies will premiere. One in particular that is worth noting is Maybe I Do. Written and directed by Michael Jacobs, a veteran of sitcoms like My Two Dads and Dinosaurs, Maybe I Do follows the story of Michelle and Allen. These two young people begin to question where their relationship will go next. They decide to invite their parents together for a family dinner. Little do they know, but all of their parents are involved in extramarital affairs with each other. It is a zany throwback to a romantic comedy and one that should appeal to all ages. Plus, it also stars Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, and Willam H. Macy, which makes this one hell of a cast.

Diane Keaton loved reuniting with Richard Gere on their latest flick “Maybe I Do”.
Keaton and Gere previously starred in “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” together back in 1977, with the actress discussing the reunion in an interview with Et Canada’s Carlos Bustamante.
She insists of the upcoming comedy, “I like the movie, I like the people that were in the movie, and acting in the movie.
“It was a great experience, especially Richard Gere since I worked with him… how many years [ago]?”

Two married couples, both in the upper echelons of middle-aged. Each couple is bored and disinterested in their own way: he’s too nice, she’s too uptight; he’s too caddish, she’s too wanton. In their desperation, these spouses drift into affairs — sexual, emotional, somewhere in between — all of which are allowed to go under the radar until, that is, their kids decide they maybe, kind of, sort of, just might want to marry each other. Then it all blows up in their faces.
This is the ham-fisted, forced premise of Michael Jacobs’ “Maybe I Do” which, despite its A-list cast, can’t escape its shoddy writing and worse filmmaking. The two married couples in question are Sam (William H. Macy) and Monica (Susan Sarandon), the former’s overt, ho-hum sweetness bucking up against the sensual desire of his wayward wife.

After a lean decade, the 90s staple has returned in a big way. But there is one key difference: grey hair. How did older actors take over the genre?
Much like a platonic friend who realises that their soulmate was by their side all along, Hollywood has finally noticed how desperate we are for new romantic comedies.
Over the past decade, we were lucky if we got one high-profile romcom a year. But on 27 January, there are three to choose from. On Netflix, there is You People, co-written by Jonah Hill, in which Hill’s Jewish character gets together with Lauren London’s black Muslim character (culture-clash hilarity ensues). Prime Video has Shotgun Wedding, a bet-they-thought-of-the-title-first caper in which Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel’s tropical-island nuptials are interrupted by masked gunmen. And US cinemagoers can see Maybe I Do, in which Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey consult their respective...
