Signature Entertainment has acquired UK and Ireland rights from Sc Films International to animation Get Squirrely, which it intends to release this summer.
The 3D animation, about a squirrel who plots to pull off a major heist at a giant nut factory, features the voices of Jason Jones (Pitch Perfect 2), Will Forte (Lego Movie), John Leguizamo (Ice Age), Samantha Bee (Sisters), Jim Cummings (The Lion King), Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice and John Cleese.
The Canadian feature was produced by John H. Williams (Shrek) of Vanguard Films and Dan Krech of Awesometown Entertainment. Ross Venokur directs.
Rialto acquired the film for Australia / Nz after releasing Sc Films’ animation Reef 2: High Tide in 2015. Alchemy has Us rights.
Sc Films animations include Gamba, Monkey King: The Hero and Wish. The copmany will also handle Marina Fuentes’ 6 Sales slate during Efm.

Released by Toei in October 2015 to the tune of $2m, Gamba charts the story of a town mouse who wants to go on an adventure and visit the ocean.
Along the way he meets Chuta, who needs help defending his village from an attack by weasels, led by the evil Noroi. Gamba must learn to stand up for himself and through team-work protect his friends.

Monty Python legend Terry Jones is set to direct family animation Sherlock Hound And The Case Of The Missing Santa Claus (3D), which Simon Crowe’s Sc Films has boarded ahead of the Afm.
Jones, who most recently directed Simon Pegg and Kate Beckinsale in UK comedy Absolutely Anything, is due to direct the feature with his producer-director son Bill Jones and his business partner Ben Timlett of UK production outfit Bill and Ben Productions, which is also producing.
Writers are Denis Higgins and Stephen Meier.
The Victorian-set story will feature canine sleuth Sherlock Hound on the hunt for Santa Claus after he goes missing.
Characters in the script include The Queen, a polar bear Father Christmas, Elves as penguins, Rudolph the Reindeer and evil feline Moriarty.
Currently in development, the production is aiming to shoot next spring for a Christmas 2018 release. Casting is due...

Monkey King Returns, based on a Chinese legend, charts the story of the once powerful ‘Monkey King’ who breaks free from imprisonment with the help of a young boy to save a besieged village.
Chinese production and distribution outfit Flame Node – producer of Rollercoaster and distributor of titles including The Nutcracker 3D and The Snow Queen franchise - produces with October Animation and Haute Rout.
Director is Tian Xiao Peng, while the Chinese voice-over talent includes Tong Zi Rong and Zhang Lei.

Exclusive: Double Dutch International (Ddi) president Jason Moring has announced an output deal to sell worldwide rights to Awesometown Entertainment’s animations kicking off at Afm with $16m Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer.
Production is set to begin in January on the underdog story about a miniature horse vying to land a spot on to Santa’s sleigh team. Paul Griffin, who served as lead animator on Happy Feet 2, will direct.
The slate includes Animal Crackerz, which Vanguard Films led by Shrek producer John Williams is co-producing with Awesometown.
Double Dutch and Awesometown plan to produce two to three animated features annually in the $10-15m range.
“Double Dutch is extremely excited about this massive partnership deal with Awesometown,“ said Moring. “We could not imagine a better filmmaker to kick of the slate of films in Paul Griffin.”...

British digital visual effects company Cinesite is getting into the CG feature animation business. Williams recently pacted with Henry Skelsy, managing partner of Fulton Capital Management LLC, to launch 3Qu Media. The first movie from Cinesite's animated feature slate is Charming, a comedy produced by Williams and directed by Ross Venokur (Animal Crackerz). Now London-based Cinesite is opening a feature animation division in Montreal with a deal to make family animated films for 3Qu Media, newly-launched by Shrek franchise producer John Williams, as its first gig.
