Since leaving prison, we have heard that director John McTiernan may helm the movie Red Squad but not much else has been heard. In a strange way of hearing news, McTiernan's recent appearance in a Wyoming bankruptcy court may have revealed what other films he may be involved with first. During an attempt to adjust some financial verdicts against him, McTiernan was asked about his upcoming work which includes three scripts he has apparently sold, potential work on Red Squad, and...

Nicholas Cage is attached to John McTiernan’s first post-prison film, Red Squad. The legendary action director (Die Hard, Predator, Last Action Hero, Die Hard…) spent 12-months last year in prison after getting mixed up in a shady wiretapping affair with racketeering Pi Anthony Pellicano. Released in February, McTiernan has been busy prepping his comeback. Needless to say, it’s not a prison movie… Lining up a sequel to his 1999 heist flick, The Thomas Crown Affair (something about Alexander The Great’s missing lions turning up at...

Action director John McTiernan's trouble with the law may soon be ending (read all about it here) which means he'll soon be able to get back to work. And earlier this year, his first post-prison project "Red Squad" made some headlines, but not much has been heard since. But if all goes well, it looks like he's found a leading man. THR reports that Nicolas Cage (of course) is attached to "Red Squad," penned by Cam Cannon and Jorge Suarez, about a band of mercenaries who face off against a drug lord in a Mexican border town. Cool beans, right? Well, not so fast. More legal troubles including foreclosure and bankruptcy could complicate things as that matter still has to go before the courts, so don't cross your fingers just yet. (We don't know all the legal mumbo jumbo, but hit the trade for all the details). And the...

John McTiernan and Nicolas Cage are Hollywood survivors. Box office grosses and brushes with the law are temporary, and these two filmmakers seem immortal, one returning to directing after a stay in prison and the other narrowly avoiding time spent for tax issues by doubling down on dubious gigs with big paychecks attached. Now McTiernan and Cage will end the flirtation. They are now set to work together, and life will be complete. In a report from THR on McTiernan's post-prison life, it's mentioned that John McTiernan is attached to Red Squad starring Nicolas Cage. McTiernan needs to get moving on current films in a hurry, and Red Squad has been a project linked to him for awhile. The movie focuses on a DEA investigation into a Mexican drug cartel, one that presumably gets way more violent and dangerous as it proceeds. Previously, Cage and Colin Farrell were linked to...

After serving 12 months in prison due to his involvement in the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping scandal – in which he lied to an FBI agent about his history with Pellicano - Die Hard helmer John McTiernan is finally ready to jump back into filmmaking. Though the bankrupt director is still struggling to recover from the prison stint, word is that his DEA thriller Red Squad is gearing up to shoot soon, with Nicolas Cage attached to star.
Apparently, McTiernan is under the gun to get moving on Red Squad and other projects, so that he can fight foreclosure on his ranch by proving in an evidentiary hearing on July 8th that he’ll soon be able to pay off bank loans with money from directing. In the film, Cage will play “a former DEA agent with a rogue streak.” The story focuses on the agent and his select team of mercenaries, who...

We have all been waiting with bated breath for John McTiernan to get out of prison and begin his return to film directing. Last month, we learned that McTiernan scripted a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair while he was incarcerated on top of a potential film called Red Squad that he is officially attached to. While McTiernan's financial situation remains in limbo due to bankruptcy issues, Red Squad may get underway and now has a potential leading man in the form of Nicolas Cage. Cage,...

Prison time for filmmaker John McTiernan has given him time to think, and in the process he has reportedly penned a sequel to one of his better works of the past two decades - 1999's romantic caper film "The Thomas Crown Affair," one of the rare examples of a remake that equals (and frankly improves) on the original.
Giving a fairly candid interview with Empire magazine from his Wyoming ranch, the "Die Hard" and "Predator" director confirmed that he wrote a follow-up entitled "Thomas Crown And The Missing Lioness" whilst incarcerated for perjury in Yankton prison last year.
The film's macguffin isn't a Monet painting this time but a priceless statue... albeit a fictional one. McTiernan says: "Nebuchadnezzar had two lion statues commissioned in 1100Bc: a male and a female. Alexander the Great took them when he conquered Persia. Mark Antony had them taken to Rome. Constantine moved them to Constantinople.

Die Hard director John McTiernan has been released from prison.
The 63-year-old filmmaker had spent 328 days in a South Dakota prison after pleading guilty to making false statements during FBI investigations about celebrity private detective Anthony Pellicano.
His wife Gail revealed that he had returned to his Wyoming home, where he is now under house arrest until April 3. He reportedly plans to appeal against his conviction.
The director's spokesperson said that he was filing a complaint with the Justice Department Office of Professional Responsibility to have his conviction removed.
Lawyer Hank Hockeimer said that McTiernan had been in prison "not only for a crime he did not commit, but for conduct that simply is not a crime".
"McTiernan, though incarcerated, has never been given proof of any evidence the government alleged to have against him," Hockeimer explained.

Man, I remember the last time I wrote about director John McTiernan — back in 2010, when he was going to federal prison for illegally wiretapping a producer on the Godawful “Rollerball” remake. It was pretty big news, especially because McTiernan is responsible for some really awesome action movies, from a pair of “Die Hard” flicks (including the original), “The Hunt For Red October,” and “Predator.” He also directed the aforementioned “Rollerball,” but hey, no one’s perfect. Well, McTiernan has served his time and is due out of the federal pen later this month, and he didn’t waste a whole lot of time landing a directing gig. The director, whose last movie was the military thriller “Basic” in 2003, has signed on to direct the heist thriller “Red Squad” for Hannibal Classics. Written by Cam Cannon and Jorge Suarez, “Red Squad” would follow “a former DEA agent with a rogue streak...

It's a full decade since Die Hard and Predator director John McTiernan has had a film in production. Protracted legal shenanigans and a twelve-month jail sentence stemming from the Anthony Pellicano wire-tapping scandal enforced his disappearance from the Hollywood radar. But with all that finally behind him, he's about to make his comeback. Variety reports that McTiernan has signed up to helm the action thriller Red Squad. Production company Hannibal Classics (along with Patriot Pictures) is putting up the money, and Hannibal's Cam Cannon wrote the screenplay and will produce. If you don't know the details and wondered where he'd gone, McTiernan was basically collateral damage in the Anthony Pellicano affair. Pellicano was a private investigator and expert in "forensic surveillance", much used in Hollywood circles, particularly in divorce settlements and the like. A chance discovery by the FBI discovered years worth of illegal phone-tapping, and Pellicano was prosecuted for...

Die Hard director John McTiernan has lined up his first film following his 12-month prison sentence, as Variety reports that he’ll helm the DEA thriller Red Squad. Penned by Cam Cannon and Jorge Suarez, the plot will center on a “former DEA agent with a rogue streak and his select team of mercenaries who descend upon a Mexican border town to neutralize a drug lord.” Sure, it sounds a bit generic but seeing as McTiernan has more than proven himself in the genre, I don’t think we have anything to worry about.
Of course, by now most people are familiar with the director’s story, and how he served a year in prison for lying to a federal officer. It led to Hollywood essentially shunning him and most of the projects that he was developing at the time getting abandoned, with several producers even going so far as to file lawsuits.

It’s been a rough few years for John McTiernan, the director who commonly blurs the line between craftsman and artist thanks to his genre-defining work on films like “Die Hard” and “Predator.” Thankfully, things seem to be turning around for the filmmaker, as Variety is reporting that McTiernan has lined up his first gig following his 12-month prison sentence (tangentially tied to the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping scandal that rocked Hollywood a few years ago): a nifty-sounding DEA thriller from Hannibal Classics entitled “Red Squad.” It will be good to have him back. The trade describes the script, which was written by Cam Cannon (who is also producing) and Jorge Suarez, as centering on “a former DEA agent with a rogue streak and his select team of mercenaries who descend upon a Mexican border town to neutralize a drug lord.” While this may sound like a typical action vehicle,...
