If you want to prove you’re committed to the continued survival of movie theaters, a great way to do it is to make a showing at the annual CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. It’s when studios go all out to wine and dine exhibitors, and screen previews of their upcoming film slates, hoping to squeeze out a few extra screens from your local multiplex.
This year, CinemaCon will feature a distributor on stage at Caesar’s Palace in front of every theater owner in the country, out to prove its dedication to theatrical. It’s not Apple, or Amazon and MGM, or Sony, which opened last year’s convention but will sit out this year. It’s Angel Studios, the distributor behind last year’s surprise box-office smash “Sound of Freedom.”

Hopefully, everyone had a good Thanksgiving weekend, but now we head into December with what has regularly been a down weekend by comparison. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
In this case, December kicks off with “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” the latest concert doc released by AMC after the enormous success of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which has surpassed $175 million domestically. Beyoncé Knowles is an equally popular entertainer and pop icon, whose “Renaissance Tour” ended up bringing in $580 million over 56 shows – yeah, I did the math and that means she made $10 million per night?! Beyoncé’s fans have heard murmurings about this movie for some time, but now they’ll have a chance to see it with a release into thousands of theaters, including large format premium screens like IMAX.

A new film claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as The Marvels enjoyed a dominating opening weekend, beating the second-place film by $38.0 million.
Over its first weekend in release, the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures offering, The Marvels took in $47.0 million. This easily bested second-place finisher Five Nights at Freddy’s which added $9.0 million in its third week in release to bring the Universal Pictures International film’s overall tally to $127.2 million. This pushed Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour to a third place finish where it added $5.9 million, raising its total take to $172.5 million. Holding its ground in fourth place, Priscilla took in $4.8 million to give the A24 product a three-week total of $12.7 million. In its fourth week in release, Killers of the Flower Moon fell two spots to land in fifth place this weekend where it added $4.7 million to raise the Paramount Pictures product’s total to $59.9 million.

2023 has been yet another excellent and eye-opening year for documentary filmmaking, but you probably wouldn’t know it from the rather muted role that non-fiction cinema has played in the discourse over the last 11 months. Sundance was typically replete with major work like “Milisuthando,” “Kokomo City” and “The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” but many of these unconventional highlights struggled for distribution, while the usual array of music biodocs (e.g. “Little Richard: I Am Everything”) and environmental panic attacks (“Deep Rising”) failed to make the same impression that similar festival premieres have made in the past.
The rest of the calendar has largely continued that trend, with critical favorites like Claire Simon’s “Our Body” and “De Humani Corporis Fabrica” relegated to the margins while “After Death” — a faith-based, fact-free work of pseudoscience from the distributor behind “Sound of Freedom” — became the highest-grossing documentary of the year.

In its second weekend of release, Five Nights at Freddy’s pulled in $19.4 million to give the Universal Pictures International product an overall total of $113.6 million. Killers of the Flower Moon also stood firm in third place with $7.0 million added to bring the film’s three week total to $52.3 million for Paramount Pictures. Debuting in the top ten in fourth place was the A24 product Priscilla with $5.1 million in its second week of release, giving the film an overall total of $5.3 million. After a terrific October, things settled down for the first weekend of November, as few major studios wanted to open the holiday movie season, and no new movies opened in more than 1,500 theaters. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Some might remember that this weekend was when Warner Bros had planned to release “Dune Part II” until the decision was made a few months back to move it to 2024. So far, that move hasn’t benefitted anyone much, at least not in terms of box office.
After setting a number of records last weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took a massive plunge in its second weekend, probably not helped by the fact that it was already streaming on Peacock. Still, it was able to remain #1 with an estimated $19.4 million, down 76% from its opening weekend, to bring its North American total to $113.6 million. The PG-13 horror movie added another...

On a weekend when “Five Weeks at Freddy’s” (Universal) dropped 76 percent and overall grosses were $65 million on a traditionally prime release date, it could have been worse. With limited studio alternatives, there were some good holds among longer-run films, and solid expansions for “Priscilla” (A24) and “The Holdovers” (Focus). “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) showed particular strength with a 13 percent drop in its fourth weekend.
“Freddy’s” added $19.4 million after its unexpectedly massive opening. It’s also a massive fall — one of the biggest ever for its level of initial gross, and more so for a film with an A- Cinemascore. Still, let’s be honest: A month ago, a prediction of “Freddy’s” grossing nearly $20 million its second weekend would be considered delusional.
The Blumhouse videogame adaptation is now at $113 million domestic, $217 million total worldwide off a film budgeted at $20 million pre-marketing. Already, that’s a massive...

In what is one of the lowest grossing weekends of the year, Five Nights at Freddy’s was able to overcome a truly horrific second weekend decline of 76% to remain atop the box office with an estimated $19.4 million. As we said in our Thursday predictions, no matter the decline this movie saw, anything it made was just the cherry on top of the massive $80 million sundae it had last week.
It is evident this film was made for the fans and the fans propelled it to that record breaking opening, but with no real appeal to general audiences, we are seeing the type of decline a film like this can have. Of course it really doesn’t matter when your film costs just $20 million to make and has already surpassed $140 million worldwide in just one week. This isn’t a Flash or Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny...

“Sound of Freedom” will be available at no charge to Amazon’s domestic Prime Video subscribers beginning the day after Christmas, Dec. 26, 2023. The film, which debuted Friday to buy for $20 on most VOD platforms, had previously been available to stream (following its theatrical release) exclusively on Angel Studios’ own platform starting Oct. 13.
Even if one counts the VOD/download on-sale debut as the end of its “theatrical window,” that’s still a four-month period when it was mostly available only in theaters, which now qualifies as old-fashioned amid swiftly shrinking theatrical windows. As previously reported in TheWrap, DVD and Blu-Ray availability will begin on Nov.14. Finally, on Dec. 15 — five months after its Independence Day week theatrical debut — it’ll be available for digital rental. And now we know where it’ll land in its first streaming window.
Alejandro Monteverde’s “Sound of Freedom” was the biggest non-“Barbenheimer” story of the 2023 summer movie season.

Taylor Swift blew the doors open for more artists to bring their live tours to the movies, Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble said Friday.
Nontraditional content accounted for almost 14% of Cinemark’s domestic box office results in the third quarter, and represents a significant growth opportunity for the movie theater industry, Gamble said during the company’s conference call to discuss third quarter results, which saw a 35% surge in revenue year over year to $874.8 million.
The fourth quarter looks equally promising of nontraditional titles, kicked of by Swift’s record-breaking phenomenon “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” movie and with the film version of the other mega-tour of the summer, Beyonce’s “Renaissance,” hitting the theaters Dec. 1.
“Alternative content, nontraditional content has always showed tremendous promise and it was frustrating that it never seemed to really get going,” Gamble said. Concert films, faith-based films, anime and multicultural titles from Bollywood and beyond...

Angel Studios' latest film, After Death, is available to watch in theaters and could be another low-budget box office success.
The film is a mix of interviews and re-enactments of the events that follow different people coming near death and the spiritual experiences that ensue.
After Death is only the second theatrically released film by Angel Studios. Earlier this year, Sound of Freedom became one of the biggest hits of the year, earning $184.2 million at the domestic box office.

In the early days of the culture war, science stood on one side and religion on the other. In 1925, the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial hung on whether a Tennessee high-school instructor had violated state law by teaching human evolution. He was on trial, but it was really Charles Darwin who was on trial. Darwin won, and so, in a larger sense, did Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, and the whole tsunami of advanced science that was setting the stage for the 20th century. By the time physicists and astronomers were exploring the origins of the universe, the whole “God made the world in 7 days” idea, even if you fervently believed it, did not pretend to be “science.”
But with the rise of the American Evangelical movement and its worldly political engine, the Christian Right, what once looked like a science-vs.-faith dichotomy began to break down. You could see this in...

Plot: Based on real near-death experiences, After Death explores the afterlife with the guidance of New York Times bestselling authors, medical experts, scientists, and survivors that shed a light on what awaits us.
Review: Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom absolutely took the world by storm earlier this year with its take on human trafficking. While there was plenty of controversy surrounding the tactics being used, it clearly resulted in a lot of money. After Death is the next project to come from those producers, and it takes a vastly different approach. This is a documentary that takes a look at various survivors and their near death experiences. More specifically, the moment they died and what happened before they were brought back to life. As you can imagine, this is absolutely geared towards those who are more spiritual.
The survivors mostly have interesting stories that are often harrowing. But the format of “survivor tells their story,...

There may be nothing more boomer than comparing Gen Z’s box-office juggernaut to a movie released before their parents were born. Nevertheless, that’s what this boomer is doing: The staggering opening for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Universal) is as shocking as the success of “Easy Rider” 54 years ago for its sense of upheaval and disruption.
Like Peter Fonda’s low-budget motorcycle cross-country drama “Easy Rider” in 1969, we are seeing moviegoers under 25 embrace a film as their own while it leaves older viewers baffled. Similarly, its success will have significant strategic impact for the future of production and distribution.
Blumhouse Productions’ $20 million video game adaptation opened to an estimated $78 million and $152 million worldwide. With its lower ticket prices, that total translates to a bigger audience than the first weekends of either “Taylor Swift The Eras Tour” (AMC) or “Oppenheimer” (Universal).
It’s a shocker. Sure, rules can be broken...

The theatrical day and date model has been one that has been scrutinized over the past few years as the world tried to figure out how to release movies during a global pandemic. Warner Bros famously saw their entire 2021 slate receive simultaneous releases on their HBO streaming service and felt the wrath of filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan. But every so often, that model proves not to be that big of a factor. For instance, this weekend saw Universal release the video game adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s to the record-breaking number of $78 million, $13 million more than we predicted on Thursday. That number makes it the second highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation of all time after The Super Mario Bros Movie took in $146.3 million earlier this year while also breaking the Halloween weekend record previously held by Puss in Boots.

Halloweekend saw a huge horror hit, in fact the biggest opening for this weekend ever, and many movie writers and critics felt older than usual with that movie’s jaw-dropping success among the youth. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal and Blumhouse had been developing a movie based on Scott Cawthorn‘s popular video game series, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” for quite some time, and it was finally released this weekend into 3,675 theaters. Starring Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”), reviews were harsh, as it only received 25% on RottenTomatoes, but this was always to be expected based on the younger age range of fans of the games and books.
After making a whopping $10.3 million from Thursday previews – more than the $7.7 million made by David Gordon Green‘s “Halloween” reboot in 2018 – the PG-13 rated “Freddy’s” brought in $39.5 million on Friday (including previews). That was more than 2019’s “Joker,...

Freddy Fazbear and his creepy animatronic buddies are lighting up the box office, as Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is setting multiple industry records with its $78 million domestic/$130 million global opening weekend.
Not only is it more than double the highest opening seen on Halloween weekend and the largest opening for a film releasing day-and-date on home platforms, but it has also topped the 2018 revival of “Halloween” to become the best opening ever for Blumhouse.
While its numbers aren’t as high as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Barbie,” or “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is enjoying the same kind of strong hardcore fan turnout as all three of those 2023 box office hits.
Rather than stay home and watch the movie on Peacock, “Five Nights” fans want to see it together in a packed theater, and social media has been filled with pictures of...

Numbers have begun rolling in for this last weekend before Halloween and with tracking lying somewhere between $50 million and $90 million for the video game adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, the film is hitting its mark with a projected $78 million opening. That’s about $13 million more than we saw it on Thursday. The number is extremely impressive for several reasons, one of which is the fact this was a theatrical day and date release where the film was also available on the peacock streaming service.
That number puts this PG13 rated horror film in some good company as it becomes the second highest grossing opening for a video game movie (sandwiched between The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $146.3 million and Sonic The Hedgehog’s (72 million)) while also becoming the highest grossing opening ever for Halloween weekend. While it also becomes Blumhouse’s 19th number 1 opener. It’s only been out for two nights, but “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is already off to a robust start at the domestic box office. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ horror film spring-trapped $39.4 million in ticket sales from 3,675 locations on its opening day, a number that includes $10.3 million in preview screenings.
That’s an impressive figure for a release that is already available on streaming. Universal elected to drop “Freddy’s” on its platform Peacock on the same day as its theatrical debut. The studio employed the strategy with previous Blumhouse productions, the slasher sequels “Halloween Kills” ($49 million debut) and “Halloween Ends” ($40 million debut). “Five Nights” looks to be outperforming both of those films though, now projecting a three-day total of $78 million. With a lean production budget of $20 million, it’s already a winner.

The faith-based indie outfit behind summer blockbuster Sound of Freedom is out with documentary After Death, which opens in over 2,600 theaters this weekend, an extremely wide release for a doc that doesn’t also happen to be a concert film.
The exploration of near-death experiences by survivors, scientists, medical professionals and authors that addresses the question of what happens when we die has pre-sold over 211,000 tickets. That’s according to the latest check of a constantly updating ticket counter on Angel’s website that estimates pre-orders based on integrations with ticketing platforms and exhibitors.
The company declined to put a dollar figure on pre-sales. “We are thrilled by audience response, craving a theatrical experience for After Death,” said Jared Geesey, distribution head of Provo, Utah-based Angel. “Life’s biggest question deserves the biggest screens and a distraction-free environment.”
Director Stephen Gray said the sudden loss of his brother-in-law at age 36 in part inspired the film.

The final weekend before Halloween is upon us and the masters of horror, Blumhouse, are releasing the highly anticipated video game adaptation of Five Night’s at Freddy’s. The PG13 rated film is seeing a wide release on around 3500 screens with tracking currently having the film hit around $50 million while some see the film hitting as high as $85 million.
The biggest obstacle the film has to overcome is that for some reason, some studio executive at Universal thought it’d be a good idea to give this one a simultaneous release with their Peacock streaming service. So the big question is: will people pay the $10-$20 to see this in theaters or will paying just $5.99 for a month of Peacock be the route a lot of people take? I am not a big supporter of streamers, there are too many and most of them put out maybe one decent movie every three months.

Watching Stephen Gray and Chris Radtke’s “After Death,” a faith-based documentary about near-death experiences that was produced by the same company behind “Sound of Freedom” (last summer’s most popular movie among people who might accuse you of being a pedophile on Twitter), I was reminded of something that Lou Reed famously never said: “Only a few chosen people have been lucky enough to bask in the light of Jesus Christ during the kind of disembodied episode that might accompany a terrible car accident or a life-saving operation, but every one of them has apparently turned it into a full-fledged career.”
Which isn’t to suggest that Dr. Mary Neal is lying about the heart-to-heart she had with the son of God after drowning in a kayak, or that ordained minister and “90 Minutes in Heaven” author Don Piper doesn’t sincerely believe in the story that sold more...

October (and even September) have been chock-full of appropriately scary horror movies for spooky season, and the weekend before Halloween introduces one more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Those looking for the next big horror franchise need not look much further than Universal and Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” an adaptation of the popular multi-platform video game first introduced in 2014. That initial game led to five sequels, multiple spin-offs, and even a series of novels that just kept things going for the fanbase that has been itching for this movie to happen.
Directed by Emma Tammi of the 2018 horror-Western “The Wind,” the movie stars Josh Hutcherson from the “Hunger Games” movies, Elizabeth Lail from “Mack & Rita,” Piper Rubio and Kat Conner Sterling, but as we all know by now, the cast of a horror movie is rarely as important as the premise, especially with...

Angel Studios has made a donation to The Cinema Foundation’s newly formed Industry Promotions fund. This announcement came on Monday morning amid ShowEast, the annual exhibition industry event taking place in Miami, Florida. While the exact amount of the contribution was not revealed, sources say it is a portion of the funds earned by Angel Studios’ “Sound of Freedom” during National Cinema Day. The blockbuster human trafficking drama earned $550,688 on Aug. 27 on a day during which tickets nationwide cost just $4.
The Industry Promotions Fund will work with studios and exhibitors to advance the future of the moviegoing experience in the hopes of supporting a healthy exhibition industry across North America. National Cinema Day brought in $34 million domestic to theaters, including “Barbie” topping with $5.68 million. That amounted to nearly 8.5 million attendees, a 5% increase over last year’s National Cinema Day.
