Vito Schnabel (Rick) is a son of the artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, who was a real figure in the New York artistic and nightlife scene that Truman Capote also frequented in the early 1980s. Julian Schnabel directed the 1996 biopic Basquiat, about the life of his fellow early-1980s artist Jean Michel Basquiat.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, or the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR or NSDAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in supporting the American Revolution. A nonprofit group, the organization promotes education and patriotism. However, during the mid-twentieth century (including during the time this episode was set) the DAR had yet to overcome a reputation for racism that stemmed from the 1939 incident when they refused to allow a Black opera singer, Marian Anderson, to perform at a large auditorium that they owned, Washington, DC's Constitution Hall. The then-first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt), instead arranged or Anderson to perform on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and her show was attended by 75,000 people,
