The 5th annual Oakland Underground Film Festival, which runs this year on Sept. 25-29, features their usual mix of socially and politically relevant films, challenging genre fare and loads of short films.
The fest opens on the 25th with two provocative documentaries. First up is Tia Lessin and Carl Deal’s Citizen Koch, which shines a spotlight on the behind-the-scenes machinations of the billionaire Koch brothers who have greatly influenced modern politics. (Citizen Koch is also screening for free, which you can RSVP for on the Oakuff website.) Also on the 25th is a profile of Riot Grrrl icon Kathleen Hanna in The Punk Singer, directed by Sini Anderson.
Other films in the fest include the martial arts action romp Death Grip by Eric Jacobius; the anti-bullying drama The Dirties by Matt Johnson; the quirky family shenanigans of Toastmaster by Eric Boadella; and the Closing Night lyrical documentary about life on the U.

I have a secret love for goofy, direct-to-video action flicks, much like the “secret” love Criminal Complex editor Jimmy Callaway has for me (thanks for the crocheted love heart, buddy – I know it was you). As a juvenile delinquent, I whittled away days going through the racks of terrible videos at the local movie shoppe, picking out anything that had the word “death,” “ninja,” or “starring Christopher Lambert” on the cover.
Luckily, with the advent of DVDs and cheaper production costs, the stream of bullshit Dtv movies has only increased. One of the more promising of these is Death Grip, the punch-baby of Eric Jacobus (Eric Jacobus presents an Eric Jacobus joint, written and directed by Eric Jacobus, starring Eric Jacobus). Jacobus has thrown a clip online of one of the fight scenes, and it’s stab-ariffic! Martial arts and knife fights go hand-in-hand like me and Chuck Liddell in...

With the theatrical premiere for the indie martial arts action flick Death Grip just a few weeks away, director/writer/lead actor Eric Jacobus has posted a knife fight scene on his youtube channel. No Bs shaky cam, rapid editing or close-up shots. Its just two deadly guys going at it in full speed, fighting continuously through a long complex series of steps while being shot in a single take. This is an exciting piece of ass-kicking.In an effort to set his life straight, lowly caterer Kenny Zemacus regains custody of his autistic brother Mark after 15 years estrangement since their mother's death. When Kenny reluctantly brings Mark on a museum catering gig, Mark unwittingly entangles them in a dangerous heist involving the museum's mysterious showpiece --...

The new trailer for Eric Jacobus' Death Grip dispenses with the story in about 10 seconds and then gets on to its real attraction: close-action martial-arts kicking and punching, mostly by a single man against a bunch of guys in hooded robes. And what fighting it is! Jacobus wrote, directed, and edited the film, his second effort; he made his directorial debut with Contour in 2006. Jacobus also plays the lead role. Here's the official synopsis: Death Grip tells the story of ex-thief turned lowly caterer Kenny Zemacus, who checks his autistic brother out of a care home where he's spent the past 15 years since their mother's death. When Kenny reluctantly brings Mark on a last minute museum catering gig that night, Mark unwittingly...

Although I loved Eric Jacobus’ 2006 martial arts flick “Contour”, I’d completely forgotten about the flick until I stumbled across a trailer for the filmmaker’s latest endeavor “Death Grip”. For a low-budget kung fu movie, “Contour” was severely badass, and I suspect that “Death Grip” will be no different. Judging from the trailer nestled below, Jacobus and company have improved their skills tenfold, and the fights look nothing short of spectacular. Keep your eyes locked on this one, as I suspect you’ll be hearing more about it in the future.
