Although 'Death in Paradise' is still going strong the peak of its popularity came when it had Kris Marshall's Humphrey Goodman in the lead role.
It's no surprise then (other than how long its taken to set up) that the BBC would look to do a spin-off that would see what happened to the lovable klutz (and girlfriend Martha) after the left St Marie.
Spin-off's are hard to get right (just ask 'Joey'), but what this show does well is give us lots of the things we liked/continue to like from the original show, but offer something different too.
It's not got 'death' in the title, so it's not chained to that element every week, so the plots/cases can be a bit more varied. Early signs suggest here that the other members of the police team might not just be cardboard cut out character types too, which is pleasing. Gosh, Dwayne from 'Death in Paradise' still haunts me.
Exploring the Humphrey and Martha relationship will also give the show a bit more depth as well, which is good because Sally Bretton is always lovely.
Time will tell whether this can go the distance, but early signs are positive.
