Nostalgia is a funny thing. From the unexpected resurgence of vinyl to modern-day flip phones, it’s pretty clear that the technical limitations of the past can often inspire the stylish trends of the future. One of my favorite examples of this is the ongoing analog horror craze, as I find it fascinating how many of the genre’s major creators appear to have been born after the decline of VHS tapes and eerie PSAs.
It’s almost like there’s a subconscious understanding that some stories are best told through fuzzy visuals and heavily compressed audio, which is why I appreciate flicks like Anthony Cousins’s Found Footage throwback Frogman, a cryptozoology-inspired scary movie that dares to incorporate lo-fi aesthetics into its storytelling during a time when most studios encourage filmmakers to make their projects look as generically slick and polished as possible. And if you also enjoyed Frogman...

Friday nights are made for Frogman. It’s a full-on fun fest of found footage freak-outs, killer creature design & effects, and hilarious interviews with kooky locals, including one guy who insists: “Frogman fucks”. Friday nights are not made for introspection and heady deep dives down philosophical rabbit holes. Friday nights are ripe for Pizza and Monsters; Beer and Body Horror; Cozy clothes ‘n’ Cryptids!
Frogman is co-written and directed by Anthony Cousins, who horror fans will no doubt recognize from the slasher send-up segments The Night He Came Back Again! Part IV – The Final Kill & The Night He Came Back Again! Part VI: The Night She Came Back of Scare Package (2019) & Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge (2022). Cousins continues his unique brand of horror-obsessed humor through into this new feature, with a forest dwelling monster that would make Bigfoot jealous.

"Cryptid hunters, rejoice! Using almost exclusively practical effects, Frogman is a found-footage creature feature based on the eerie real-life legend of the Loveland Frogman. Directed by Anthony Cousins and filmed mostly on Hi-8, Frogman will be available on Collector’s Version VHS February 9 and on VOD/Digital Platforms on March 8." Ahead of the film's VOD & Digital release, we have an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers!
Official Synopsis: "Loveland, Ohio. Home of the Frogman. In the summer of 1999, a 12-year-old named Dallas Kyle captured footage of the mythical creature, but no one believed it was real.
Twenty years later, Dallas, now an amateur filmmaker struggling to turn his passion into a career, returns to Loveland with friends Amy and Scotty determined to obtain irrefutable proof that the Frogman exists. But what starts as an innocent documentary soon turns into a Lovecraftian nightmare as Dallas uncovers the horrific secrets hidden beneath Loveland's idyllic surface.

It was only a matter of time before we got a found footage horror film about Ohio’s cryptid oddity, Loveland’s Frogman (that’s not sarcastic; I’ve seen far stranger indie horror concepts). Anthony Cousins’ search for a slimy urban legend (shot almost exclusively on Hi-8), aptly titled Frogman, is a weirdo treat for fans of V/H/S/94‘s “Storm Drain” segment featuring Raatma and other handheld shaky-specials spawned from The Blair Witch Project inspirations. Shades of Willow Creek chase a mythical creature through dense woodland territories as our view bobbles around much like found footage diehards are used to, which won’t win over any motion-sick doubters of the subgenre — even with a third act that doesn’t shy away from noteworthy Frogman effects and an unrelenting sensation of “going there.”
We follow irrelevant filmmaker Dallas Kyle (Nathan Tymoshuk), whose claim to fame is a 1999 family...

Camp Pleasant Lake: "DeskPop Entertainment will release Thomas Walton's refreshingly indie new horror film Camp Pleasant Lake in select cinemas and on VOD February 27th! The picture, which stars 90s screen icon Jonathan Lipnicki alongside a bevvy of genre film icons, is a loving throwback to the thrilling, violent summer camp slasher films of the 1980s.
In Camp Pleasant Lake, Rick and Darlene Rutherford breathe life into the eerie remnants of an old campsite, unaware of its dark past. Strange occurrences haunt the area, mirroring the tragedies of the old camp, where two decades earlier, a young girl was kidnapped and her parents brutally murdered. Amidst chilling atmospheres and long-forgotten secrets, the couple grapples with a horrifying revelation—they are entwined in the camp's history. And as the shadows of the past collide with the present, the Rutherfords must confront the haunting histories of a sinister crime.
