Stunning Visuals, Tepid Dialog
bopperbopper6 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I felt this movie had stunning visuals which is not surprising because the visuals were shot first, and then a movie, loosely based on the main characters' real life, was written later. The dialog was mediocre and clichéd, e.g., when the main character, Anderson, is jumping off a cliff he exclaims that he have never felt so alive. Another example is when Anderson's friend or agent asks him "if he got laid". The editing was instrumental in defining the mood of a scene, for example, when they were in a club the quick cuts showed the energy of the scene. The plot was somewhat predictable for the main couple but I was not sure what would happen with the secondary characters of Steve and Friederike. Alex Holdridge's acting leaves something to be desired...but he was the writer/director/editor and felt it easiest to tell his story himself.

A truly romantic movie
alexburrell3 August 2015
Great cinematography, wonderful setting. A very well written love story. I do believe that it has been underrated in its reviews. Grab a glass of wine, a snack and spend an evening watching it. You won't be disappointed. The plot is well developed and the story itself well arched. I found the female lead to be convincing without over doing the drama. The musical score could have been better but the story alone makes up for the superficial aspects. This movie was a labor of love unlike some of the large commercial productions. It's a rare treat when a work like this makes it to the big screen. It's a movie with its own bragging rights.it is a wonderful date movie. A unique piece of cinema. I found it intriguing enough to watch twice. Humble and lovely.

Intriguing European Title

Warning: Spoilers
Montenegro. Meet me there. The film MEET ME IN MONTENEGRO grabs attention. Having spent summer days in Europe's hidden treasure, Montenegro, the location for a celluloid celebration of romance is aptly cast. The sheer beauty and contrast of this country has attracted film makers to use it as a shooting location for many years. It's great to see relatively unknown countries highlighted, and featured on film. For those who haven't been there (yet), get ready to be transported there. For those of us who have enjoyed Montenegro, this film aims to bring it to life on the screen. Bravo! Viva Europa! The realism of films like this are a welcome contrast to car chases, explosions and special FX.

Unpredictable love story that makes us appreciate life
mryan-225-5500913 August 2015
I caught another one of Holdridge's movies Midnight Kiss several years ago and have been waiting for him to direct something new. This movie didn't disappoint. It's a unique and brilliant story following the aftermath of a missed opportunity at a great relationship. The characters are well developed and the scenery is awesome. I love quirky sort of characters that stumble through life with so little confidence and so much perspective. This movie makes you contemplate how well you take advantage of the opportunities that lay in front of you and what really matters in life. If you have someone you love, I highly recommend that you view it together.

Awesome movie, refreshing and emotional
camilevin2 August 2015
I was so pleasantly surprised and happy to find this gem of a movie! I saw it recommended on Facebook and it seemed interesting and I'm so glad I gave it a watch! It is such a beautiful love story that pulls you in and makes you laugh and cry at the same time! I loved finding out later that it was based on the real life love story of the actual actors in the film! If you want to see a refreshingly well done love story, this movie is for you too. The scenery alone is amazing! I highly recommend this film! I watched it with my parents and they loved it too! I am looking forward to seeing future films from these writers. I was so inspired by this artfully done movie that I got out my old sketchbook and started drawing after the movie was over!

Great characters. Really enjoyable.
altisse2 August 2015
This movie really surprised me. It made me laugh and made me cry. I really felt invested in the characters. I' was so excited with the outcome but don't want to give it away. This is a great date movie and the theater I saw it in had a wide range of ages watching and it seemed to be universally enjoyed. When looking for a really nice , not too heavy story to relax and enjoy, I would give this a watch. The scenery in the film is another bonus. I haven't been to Europe but almost feel like I have now. Overall storyline takes you through the trials and tribulations of many adults with their career choices and struggles and their relationship trials and tribulations and I felt like they tapped into my emotions in both of these areas and gave me a fun roller coaster ride of enjoyment

Hope this comes to Australia soon!
gfhcomms5 August 2015
I can't wait for this to be available in Australia, I loved Alex's previous film In Search of a Midnight Kiss and this is an even more personal story.

Thank you both for sharing your story with us, albeit a more fictionalized version of your partnership!

It's not an American in Paris this time, it's an American experiencing Berlin and Eastern Europe and showing it back to us in a realistic way.

Getting Rupert Friend just as he was breaking in to the US, on the back of Homeland, is a stroke of luck, and one that speaks to the talent of everyone involved.

Please, please Australian distributors, make this available to us here!

Thoroughly enjoyable

Having just seen Alex Holdridge's "In Search of a Midnight Kiss," I thought I'd give this later film a spin... and guess what? Like "Midnight Kiss," I found this film to be charming and engaging, and totally enjoyable. In this one, he writes, directs, and stars, and scores nicely with a sweet story, lovely Berlin cinematography, and a capable on-screen presence.

Mr. Holdridge seems to have a gift for writing screwball couples and guy pals well. Both films feature unusual guy-girl pairings, and both leading men have a well-written, supportive buddy that helps him navigate the minefield of 21st century dating life. In "Montenegro," Rupert Friend is the pal, dealing with his own in-flux love life, while Holdridge's Anderson finds his way with love interest Lina.

I hate calling this a rom-com (but it is) or a coming-of-age film (which it is as well). It's more a journey of discovery for all parties, as one "never was" couple rekindles a past flame, loses it again, and attempts to re-find it, while a stable long-term couple deal with tears in the fabric of their lives. Both stories are relatable, and adult movie-goers of all ages will undoubtedly find snippets of their own lives and dreams in these nicely written characters. Kudos to Linnea Saasen (who co-wrote and co-directed) and Jennifer Ulrich as the on-screen ladies who nicely round out the couples.

"Montenegro" is a solid (if slightly crude at times) date night film, and worth the briskly paced 90 minutes. Check it out.
