Minkyu Lee’s world of sorcery and shapeshifting will take center stage in The Witch Boy, Netflix’s newest animated musical feature film.
Hailing from the Oscar-nominated Adam and Dog director and based on Molly Knox Osterag’s New York Times bestselling novel series of the same name, The Witch Boy takes place in a secret, magical community where girls are born to be witches and boys grow into shapeshifters. The Lee’s protagonist, Aster, is surprised to discover his emerging witch powers. But when a mysterious force endangers his world, he must embark on a journey to learn the truth behind himself, his powers and all the magic around him.
The Witch Boy will also feature original music by the Grammy-nominated sister trio Haim. Maria Melnik writes the script with Roy Lee, Miri Yoon and Ryan Harris producing. Vertigo Entertainment produces the feature and Netflix releases.

Hand-drawn animation needs a hero, and the latest project to champion the technique is an upstart steampunk adventure overseen by a group of veteran Disney and DreamWorks artists.
Hullabaloo is the Victorian era sci-fi story of Veronica Daring, a young scientist who goes on a quest to find her kidnapped inventor father. The title refers not just to the ruckus she causes, but is the codename for her secret, crime-fighting identity.

Here's a great little collection of Wicked character art created by Disney animator Minkyu Lee, which shows us what the characters would look like in a Disney animated film. Lee worked on films such as The Princess and the Frog and Frozen. These were created by the artist while studying at CalArts and interning at Disney. Lee is a very talented artist and animator who also directed the Oscar nominated short Adam and Dog, which you can watch here. You can read about the artist's thoughts on the importance of creating a visual development portfolio like this and how it came about on his website. I think Wicked would make for a fantastic animated film at Disney, but I believe Universal Pictures hold the rights, and they will be developing a live-action version of it. ...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

What a night! Seriously, the 2013 Oscars had its share of ups and downs and I'm sure plenty of hatred will be thrown the way of host Seth MacFarlane whose joke selection was all over the place from great to terrible to tasteless to tame, but I'm actually talking about the way tonight's Oscars shared the wealth so evenly. Twelve films won Oscars tonight, 15 if you count the shorts. Argo took home Best Picture, Film Editing and Adapted Screenplay, but in the end it was Life of Pi with the most awards, including the upset over Steven Spielberg (Lincoln). The Oscars often give us plenty to discuss in terms of taste and we all may disagree on many of the overall winners, but I have a much harder time disagreeing when there is no kind of consensus. After all, how often does one single film, over the span of 365 days nail...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

And in the end, it was the movie with a snubbed director that took the top prize. Ben Affleck's "Argo" rocked the Academy Awards by winning the Best Picture of the year award. The biggest surprise for me was Ang Lee who went home with the Best Director trophy for "Life of Pi" while Steven Spielberg went home empty handed. His "Lincoln" still won two Academy Awards, one for Best Actor for the great Daniel Day-Lewis' fine performance as our beloved 16th President, and the other for production design.
Just as I predicted to the lovely Anne Hathaway three months ago, she went home with the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her brilliant performance as Fantine in "Les Miserables." This sort of is a blessing from the Academy as well for turning in a memorable Catwoman performance in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises."

I'm predicting a big night for Michael Haneke, Argo and Daniel Day-Lewis
History be damned. A pox on precedent. A poke in gravitas's eye. This year it looks very much as if Argo, the nifty Iranian caper conjured up by Ben Affleck and George Clooney, will speed off with best picture, making it the first film to do so without a best director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989.
To those who say this riderless horse lacks the poundage of a typical best picture winner, just look at the light lifting the academy has preferred to do of late: The King's Speech, The Artist, and now Argo, just one letter away from an inert gas. In a year of passionate favorites and flash-fire controversies, Affleck's film has emerged as the clear consensus winner – the film that rubs the least number of people up the wrong way.

On Oscar Sunday the great and good of the silver screen will assemble at the Dolby Theatre for the 85th Academy Awards. This year’s extravaganza will surely be a night to remember.
With it being the biggest event in movie geekdom, the Wamg crew came up with their own Oscar predictions. Some of the categories there was a consensus on, while others we were divided.
Throughout the awards season, frontrunners jockeyed for position, all hoping to head into Sunday’s ceremony as the favorite to take home gold.

Photo: AMPAS I'm going out on a limb on a couple of my 2013 Oscar predictions, but I don't think any of these predictions are so wild as to be surprising or so outrageously crazy a miracle would have to happen for them to come true. Like most years, this year's Oscars has its share of locks. This year that includes Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) for Best Actor, Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) for Best Supporting Actress, Amour for Best Foreign Language Film and Searching for Sugar Man for Best Documentary. Then you have your "most likely" winners, which includes Argo for Best Picture, Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi) for Best Cinematography, Adele's "Skyfall" for Best Song, Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) for Best Score and it would seem Curfew and Paperman have their respective Best Short Film categories wrapped up. However, there is still a lot left to explore.

During this final week leading up to Sunday's 85th Academy Awards, I was reminded of the extraordinary meta-experience that underlies several of this year's nominees. In the end, at least for me, it's not about the frantic Oscar race and ultimately who wins and who doesn't but about the joy of making and watching the movies and how they capture the zeitgeist. For instance, at Tuesday night's Academy shorts program, the animation directors discussed their personal experiences: Minkyu Lee mentioned the metaphysical in his exquisite take on the Garden of Eden, "Adam and Dog"; Pes explained the weird sensation of physically chopping objects and then creating the pixilation for "Fresh Guacamole"; Tim Reckart described the tactile concreteness that you can only get from stop-motion in building a world of existential unease in "Head over Heels"; David Silverman remarked that pantomime and 3-D offered new frontiers for "The...

Predicting the Oscars? Whew! It.s a tough one this year! Besides, honestly, Anne Hathaway and Daniel Day-Lewis, there.s no clear-cut favorite at the 85th Academy Awards. Chicago – Hollywood’s favorite night of self-congratulations commences this Sunday, finally putting an end to the awards season and allowing us to get on with the new year in film. One last look back at 2012. Will it be “Argo” or “Lincoln”? Spielberg or the field? What the heck wins Best Original Screenplay? The critical brain trust at HollywoodChicago.com — Brian Tallerico, Matt Fagerholm, & Patrick McDonald — got together to try and predict what will win, opine on what should win, and get in one last jab at what should have been nominated.
Unlike most years, there is a surprising lack of consensus in the big eight categories. We all predict the same winner in Picture, Actor, and Supporting Actress, but the other five categories offer disagreement. Okay folks, it's crunch time. Have you submitted your Oscar ballot yet? There's big money on the line (at least a hundy we hope, right?).
As we do every year on NextMovie, we're handicapping the Oscar races to give you a leg up on your friends, family and coworkers when entering your high-stakes pool, which as we all know is as much about the glory as the greenbacks (freaking Al from finance still hasn't gotten that smirk off of his face for calling Cotillard over Christie in 2008; get over yourself, Al).
Our usual disclaimers: We do not condone gambling, unless you're in Vegas or on a reservation. Good luck!
(And for a trusty second opinion, check out Joe Reid's Oscar predictions on Film.com.)

Directed by CalArts graduate Minyun Lee (responsible for character design on Winnie The Pooh and Wreck-It Ralph), and with the help of other artists who also work at Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar; Adam and Dog is a beautifully animated 2D tale about the dog of Eden and what happened in those first days of Creation that made Man and Dog so inseparable. If there is one film that can beat the ultra popular Paperman, it is this one, especially considering it won the 2012 Annie award for animated short subject. Minkyu Lee published this Oscar nominated short animated film on YouTube a week ago, and it quickly collected over half a million views. For a film that features no dialogue, Adam and Dog speaks volumes.

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced. The short film races are always extremely tough to call -- especially now that the entire Academy membership is eligible to vote for them. This race seems to be between two films: Disney character animator Minkyu Lee's "Adam and Dog" (which is made from money he saved while working at Disney, though Disney had no involvement) and actual Disney production, John Kahr's "Paperman." The latter won the Annie and will probably win here, but both are great and either could win. Nominees and predictions below. Disney’s visual developement artist Lee is bringing us this charming story which examines the relationship between humans and animals… Enjoy! Head Over Heels, an 11-minute film made on a shoestring budget in Britain is up against Disney for an animation Oscar. Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park loves it – but can it beat the favourite?
Call it the Wallace & Gromit effect. A quirky British film called Head Over Heels could be about to upset the natural order in Hollywood and beat Disney to the coveted animation Oscar.
Just like A Grand Day Out, Nick Park's first, much-loved 1989 animation, Head Over Heels was made at the National Film and Television School (Nfts) and is now set to make a similar impact overseas. It is the only student film in contention for an Oscar next week.
Describing the animation, directed by Timothy Reckart and produced by Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly, as "one of those stand-out little gems that doesn't come around that often", Park said: "It's a cleverly conceived but simple idea.

Man’s best friend, guacamole, marriage, Ayn Rand and paper airplanes are just a few of the subjects tackled in this year’s lineup of Oscar-nominated animated shorts.
All these films have in common is that they’re under 40 minutes long and created through some form of animation. Otherwise, the films are wildly different in both tone and technique. Some are stop-motion films, some are hand-drawn, others computer-generated — and one is a hybrid.
As you get ready to fill out your own personal Oscar ballot, here’s a look at the funny, sweet, and serene stories facing off in the animated shorts category this year.

Watch: Oscar-Nominated Short 'Head Over Heels' a Poignant Love Story of a Couple on Different Planes
Following the online debuts of the other four competing Oscar-nominated short animated films, stop-motion "Head Over Heels" is now available to watch until the day of the Oscars (February 24). Full video below. The poignant, autumnally lit film centers on a couple who operate on different planes; the husband goes about his day rightside-up, while the wife conducts her daily routine on the ceiling. When an accident occurs, their world of bickering and missed communications is literally turned upside-down. Made by a team of 11 students over 15 months, the film is directed by Timothy Reckart at the National Film and Television School. You can watch the Oscar-nominated short "Adam and Dog" here, and "Paperman," along with a featurette on the film, here. The other shorts, "Fresh Guacamole" and "The Simpsons: The Longest Daycare," are available to watch here.

Here are the five animated short films that have been nominated for an Oscar at the 2013 Academy Awards. It's a great group of nominees this year, and it's usually been hard to watch these kinds of shorts before, so it's really cool that we are able to watch them now before the Oscars. The shorts include, Adam and Dog directed by Minkyu Lee, Fresh Guacamole directed by Pes, Head over Heels directed by Timothy Reckart and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly, Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare directed by David Silverman, and Paperman directed by John Kahrs.
They are all really good films, but I'm going to be rooting for Disney's Paperman because it was so damn adorable, and I loved the animation! Watch all the shorts for yourself, and let us know what your favorite is!
Maggie Simpson attends the Ayn Rand Daycare Center, where she finds a caterpillar and faces off against her nemesis.

All five of 2013's Oscar-nominated animated short films have found their way online for you to enjoy and I have included them all directly below for you to watch and then vote on your favorite. Among the five, Disney's Paperman is the favorite to win, but Minkyu Lee's Adam and Dog has certainly gained a lot of attention since it came online. The story of the latter is just as you'd expect, a story of Adam in the Garden of Eden and the birth of the idea "man's best friend". In addition to those two you have Fresh Guacamole by Pes, Timothy Reckart and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly's Head Over Heels and David Silverman's Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare". Paperman remains my favorite of the bunch while Adam and Dog is quite good and the Maggie Simpson short is quite fun. I wasn't particularly a fan of...

Five nominees. Five animated shorts. Who will win the Oscar in a few weeks? Now you get to decide. Thanks to a tip from our friends at Bleeding Cool via The Film Stage, we've collected the complete set of all five 2013 Oscar nominated animated short films for your viewing pleasure. Around this time of year, with the Academy Award nominations getting lots of attention, the short film noms usually end up getting shown in theaters (live-action or doc) or screened online (animated), which is the case again this year. Now they're available to view, in full, online and I can certainly say—without a doubt—all five shorts are worth watching. One of the nominated short films is Disney's Paperman, which played in front of Wreck-It Ralph and was already featured on Fs.net last week. But there are still four other excellent shorts to see, embedded below. Up first...

NPR Bradley Cooper speaks. And charms.
New York Times 'red carpet projects' 478 looks from Oscar's past. Truly random selection but it was fun seeing some of the stunners again
La Times another day, another prize for Argo. This time it's the USC Scripter prize for screenplay (which goes to the author of the original text and the screenwriter who adapted it). I'm glad there are a few "who will win?" dramas left for Oscar night but, as ever, Best Picture won't be one of them. Argo has become a steamroller.
Gawker Rich Juzwiak slams Rex Reed's unkind words for Melissa McCarthy but makes a righteous demand of Identity Thief's star: "Transcend, McCarthy, transcend."

We broke down the Best Animated Short category last week both in the on-going Oscar Guide feature (other editions linked below this post) and on yesterday's Oscar Talk podcast. The race is a bit nebulous with the recent decision to open the category up to the entire Academy, with fine cases made for Disney's "Paperman," self-funded "Adam and Dog" and student film "Head Over Heels," Annie winners all. The notion of voting blocs has also suggested an edge for "Paperman" and "Maggie Simpson in ' The Longest Daycare.'" The one thing most seem to agree on is that the brief, bold...

As I watched this year’s nominees for Best Animated Short Film, I noticed something a bit strange. Pes’s Fresh Guacamole, a 90-second stop-motion film, has no dialogue at all. Adam and Dog, set in a beautifully drawn Garden of Eden, has no dialogue either. The Simpsons: The Longest Daycare, being entirely about Maggie, of course has no speaking. Paperman is also silent, in the spirit of some more recent Disney and Pixar shorts. Head Over Heels, finally, is just as willfully mute as the rest. There is not a single audible word of dialogue in any of this year’s nominees. What’s the significance of this? The silence has no bearing on the quality of the shorts, though it works better for Paperman and Fresh Guacamole than it does for Adam and Dog and Head Over Heels. However, I do think it has some relationship with the old Oscar adage of “Most” rather than...

Korean Minkyu Lee's Oscar-nominated animated short, "Adam and Dog," which won the Annie for best animated short last year, is available online. The Disney animator ("Wreck-It Ralph") made the exquisite hand-drawn work independently and out of his own pocket for about $25,000. It's an artful riff on the Genesis story with Adam discovering the friendly canine companion in the Garden of Eden and complicating his relationship with Eve. Read more about it here: ...

Chicago – Want a leg-up in your Oscar pool? The five short films nominated for the Academy Award for “Best Animated Short” are now playing at the Landmark Century Theatre in a special presentation with three other shorts (the non-nominated “Abiogenesis,” “Dripped,” and “The Gruffalo’s Child”). The program runs 88 minutes and we have mini-reviews of all five below, ranked in the order we’d like to see them win the Oscar.

“Paperman”
What a delightful piece of filmmaking. This short, which played before “Wreck-It Ralph” was superior to its acclaimed companion film. As much as it pains me to put a Disney film at the top of a category that I wish was led solely by independent productions, nothing tops “Paperman” this year. It’s a lovely piece about a NYC man who has a chance encounter with a woman while waiting for a train.

Animated shorts have never been bigger. Starting today, ShortsHD and Magnolia Pictures are screening the five nominees theatrically in North America and Europe for the eighth consecutive year along with the live-action and doc short nominees; they continue to sell briskly on iTunes; and, for the first time, the Academy has opened up the voting to all members, and will be sending out DVD screeners, which will offer greater exposure. And this year's crop is the most compelling in years: "Adam and Dog": a gorgeous hand-drawn reworking of the Genesis story from Disney animator Minkyu Lee ("Wreck-It Ralph"), who made it independent of the studio without a producer or a budget. "Fresh Guacamole": a culinary stop-motion delight by Pes ("Western Spaghetti") and the shortest short ever nominated in Oscar history at a minute and forty-five seconds. "Head over Heels": a poignant stop-mo student work by Timothy...
