Exclusive: In one of the first buys for the upcoming development cycle, ABC has put in development Lawless, from Mistresses developer/executive producer Kj Steinberg and Shonda Rhimes‘ Shondaland. The project tells the story of Joanna James, a maverick lawyer who returns to her hometown to right the wrongs she left behind. It is inspired by the real life of crusading trucker-turned-lawyer Wynona Ward, founder of Have Justice Will Travel. Former victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, Ward got compelled at age 41 by the news of another child in her family getting sexually abused by relatives to go to college and law school and start a group that provides free legal representation and support services to victims of domestic violence in rural areas. Steinberg is writing Lawless, which she is executive producing with Shondaland’s Rhimes and Betsy Beers in conjunction with UK-based producers Esther Douglas and Tara Cook.

As you saw from the just-released photos from the Arrow season finale, things are going to heat up between Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) over the next two week.
Just how much – and how it plays out – remains to be seen.
But what of Malcolm’s relationship with his son, Tommy (Colin Donnell) or Queen’s mother, Moira (Susanna Thompson)?
I sat down with the always-fun John Barrowman last week to break down what’s ahead on the final episodes, whether we’ll see Malcolm in Season 2 of the CW hit and to see if he would tell us anything about his hush-hush role on Scandal Season 2...

TV Fanatic: Is anything Malcolm is doing for his son, or is it all self-serving?

"Scandal" has booked another easy-on-the-eyes male guest star for an episode later this season.
"Torchwood" star John Barrowman will appear on the ABC drama's next-to-last episode of the season, scheduled to air May 9. Series creator Shonda Rhimes broke the news Tuesday (April 9) with the following tweet:
"John Barrowman is here working at @ScandalABC today. Life is good. #torchwood #captainjack #iamanerd"
Per usual with "Scandal," Rhimes is keeping the particulars of Barrowman's character under wraps. The show is currently in the midst of a story arc about a mole within the CIA who is somehow connected to Jake Ballard (Scott Foley), the military intelligence officer who's simultaneously romancing Olivia (Kerry Washington) and spying on her at the behest of the president (Tony Goldwyn).
Barrowman and Rhimes have worked together once before: He starred in the Rhimes-produced ABC pilot "Gilded Lilys" last year, but it didn't go to series. He currently has...

America is getting its very own Downton Abbey!
NBC is developing The Gilded Age, a period drama centered on the millionaire titans of 1880s New York written and produced by Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
“This was a vivid time,” said Fellowes, “with dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry; a time when money was king.”
News of the project, which NBC describes as “an epic tale of the princes of the American Renaissance, and the vast fortunes they made – and spent,” comes just months after ABC passed on Shonda Rhimes’ similarly-themed drama pilot Gilded Lilys.

John Barrowman is everywhere these days. And that's not a bad thing at all!
One thing that goes through your head when you’re sitting down to chat with John Barrowman: “Captain Jack is even better looking in person.” You also can’t help but notice that this is a guy who is not only extremely comfortable in his own skin but also likes to have a good time by laughing and making those around him laugh.
Case in point, his recent stint guest-hosting Attack of the Show, the weekday show on G4 that explores and makes fun of everything on the web. Whether he was doing a Tom Cruise/Risky Business spoof sans pants or hyping AfterElton’s Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney, Barrowman was relaxed, fun with just the precise amount of snark. The actor (The Deep End, Jack & Bobby, Mad Men) will scrub in for multiple episode of the ABC drama this fall, TV Guide confirms, only revealing the character's profession and leaving viewers to wonder whether he'll be a love interest for an employee of Seaside Wellness.
Long had previously booked a role on the Shonda Rhimes pilot Gilded Lilys, a period piece that failed to earn a pickup on ABC this season.
Private Practice Season 6, meanwhile, will premiere on September 25. It's unclear when Long will make his debut.

Parenthood: Matt Lauria Set for Season 4
TVLine is reporting that Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights) will be reuniting with Jason Katims, as the actor has signed on for a recurring role in the upcoming fourth season of Parenthood. Lauria will reportedly play a soldier returning from Afghanistan that bonds with Zeek, a veteran as well. There's no word (yet) on when he'll make his first appearance on the 15-episode season, however.
The Braverman family patriarch may not get his own storylines that frequently, tending to average about one per season, and very rarely do we get a chance to delve in his past. The road trip episode last season may have made progress in filling out Zeek Braverman, but the man tends to be very closed-off about himself, getting involved in the lives of others to deflect attention. Maybe having someone there that understands where he's been and what...

What a day for ABC, right?
They've issued countless renewals, cancellations, and pilot pickups, but it all had to come to an end. Like NBC, ABC put off the bad news for later in the day, cancelling a chunk of its freshman shows in one swoop. Having already dispatched Gcb, ABC has given the walking papers to Missing, Pan Am, and The River, according to TV Line. None are especially surprising considering the low ratings and middling-at-best hype for each of the three, with only Missing still airing new episodes. Pan Am finished its abbreviated run in February, while The River ran through its eight episodes in February and March.
Private Practice, meanwhile, has been given a final season order of 13 episodes. Producers of the medical drama, which moved from its post-Grey's Anatomy slot earlier this season,...

I hear that ABC is in talks to pick up Private Practice for a 13-episode sixth and final season. I hear a final renewal decision on the bubble series has not been made yet but the series’ chances have been helped by its strong ratings performance last week. In its second airing in its new Tuesday 10 Pm slot, the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff posted a 2.2/6 in adults 18-49, up 29% from its modest premiere on the night the week before, to log its most-watched telecast in more than a year and a half and its best 18-49 result in more than two months. While sources don’t completely rule out an 18-episode or even 22-episode pickup, I hear the conversation has focused on a 13-epsiode order and that star Kate Walsh, whose current deal is coming up, has committed to 13 more episodes. If Private Practice is renewed, creator Shonda Rhimes could...

We're getting down to it across the dial: Upfront week (May 14-17), where the fates of numerous shows are announced by various networks.

The network is in the middle of production on a number of promising pilots, from Marc Cherry's Desperate Housewives follow-up (Devious Maids) to Terry O'Quinn's return to primetime (666 Park Avenue) to another Shonda Rhimes drama (Gilded Lilys) that, ironically, may bump a current Shonda Rhimes drama from the lineup.
If picked up, which shows will these replace? Some in the poll below may be in more danger (The River, Pan Am) than others (Private Practice), but none has been renewed yet, meaning all are in danger.

Every year, the five major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) order pilots to be considered for the fall season. A pilot, as you may know, is the first episode of a TV series and the final step in a long development process from idea to screen.
From the 87 drama and comedy pilots ordered this year, a new crop of television shows will be selected -- and I read the scripts for each and every one of them. Over the course of this week, I'll walk you through the network's pilot slates, offer a bit of analysis on their present schedules and provide you with a rundown of the drama contenders. (Plus, a little bit of info about the comedies, too.) Of course, not all of these shows will find their way to your TV set -- in fact, most of them you may never hear of again.

Shonda Rhimes’ (showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy) upcoming period drama pilot Gilded Lilys has found a fantastically good-looking leading man for the ladies to swoon over. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to announce Gilded Lilys will play host to the marvelous talents of Captain Jack! No, not Jack Sparrow. I mean the one, the only, the immortal Jack Harkness of Doctor Who and Torchwood fame.
John Barrowman has made a name for himself playing the “I’ll have sex with anything that moves” type that is Captain Jack, and will continue to play to that strength in Gilded Lilys. He plays Julius Ashford Lily, the golden boy of the wealthy Lily family. He’s his mother’s favorite, and the women don’t mind him too much neither. Like any handsome man of means, Julius is charming when he needs to be and has no problem getting in bed with any woman he desires.

John Barrowman has joined the cast of "Gilded Lilys." What does this mean for "Torchwood"?
According to TV Guide, Barrowman will play Julius Ashford Lily, the favorite son and "golden boy" of the Lily family. The period drama from "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes tells the story of the first luxury hotel built in New York City in 1895.
"Gilded Lilys" also stars Blythe Danner, Madeline Zima, Matt Lauria and Matt Long.
Barrowman previously starred in BBC's "Torchwood" as Captain Jack Harkness. The show wrapped up Season 4 on Starz in September.
A source close to the situation told HuffPost TV if "Torchwood" does get another season on Starz, it definitely would not be in the next year. "Torchwood" creator Russell T. Davies was at work on new TV projects, but has recently stepped back from the work to care for his partner.
