Celebrities have unusual ways of harkening back to the past. Harry Houdini had nothing to do with Dua Lipa until Lipa released her song “Houdini” from her album Radical Optimism. Still, referencing a stage magician from a century ago is an odd move for a pop singer. Lipa explained why she referenced an icon from another era in her song and what she is trying to accomplish with Radical Optimism.
Dua Lipa used Harry Houdini’s name as a metaphor
During a 2023 interview with Sleek, Lipa opened up about “Houdini.” “Houdini is an escape artist, and the whole idea behind this song is essentially about knowing where you stand, understanding what you deserve, and recognizing when to stay or execute a disappearing act, like Houdini,” she said. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek in terms of the metaphor, but fundamentally, it’s about knowing your worth.”

A man spins a story in a doctor’s waiting room, sparking a fairy tale of loss and desperation
Film-makers Claire Coache and Lisle Turner are a couple who survived the horrific experience of losing two babies during pregnancy: one to a medical termination and one to miscarriage. With Cold, they transmute this trauma into a near-wordless performance of allegorical art, one that was filmed during lockdown first in an empty theatre and is now being distributed online for free in order to make the subject accessible to everyone. That’s both very noble and savvy because this discreet, extremely intimate film starring two barely known actors might have struggled to pull in paying customers considering the subject is so painful.
Janet Etuk and Jacob Meadows play a couple first met waiting in a hospital to be seen by a doctor, stressed and worried about the child she’s carrying.

Fans have been excited over the heated rivalry between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, which has been building up for a few days now. While there are other exciting moments anticipated at WrestleMania 40, it’s the clash between Reigns and Rhodes that really has fans on the edges of their seats.

This rivalry between the two professionals didn’t take months to brew like most rivalries do. Even though it had a shorter build-up, the intensity was through the roof. Fans couldn’t get enough of it, especially after Rhodes made his comeback and scored a big victory at the Rumble. And, all that hype definitely paid off in the end!

Who are we to disagree Danielle Harris? When looking for a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw, nothing in our completely mad up rules that say a movie can’t be well received at the time of release. It can win awards including one from the audiences that saw it at TIFF and the kind of go away. There are a ton of movies that are great and original films in a genre that is nearly as obsessed with sequels and movie universes as DC and Marvel are today. Stake Land (watch it Here) is an original piece of media that is one part Walking Dead, one part The Road, and all together one of the Best Horror Movies you Never Saw.

Although Dwayne Johnson has recently been making headlines for his achievements in acting, his roots can be traced back to the world of American professional wrestling promotion. Having been an icon as The Rock, he helped revolutionize WWE, making it into what it has become today. Of course, he was not alone in this, as the people he fought were also to credit for the status he has today.

It’s great to see the always terrific Raúl Castillo in a lead role, bringing both despair and tenacious grit to a luckless blue-collar father whose dreams of liquidity are shattered by a cryptocurrency scam. Cutter Hodierne’s thriller about three financial crime victims who go after the man responsible, Cold Wallet, doesn’t always make the tech talk crackle or exactly nail the tone he appears to be going for, of home invasion tension streaked with dark humor. But solid performances and a pulpy scenario that keeps you guessing make this a suspenseful watch.
While it’s clear that director Hodierne and screenwriter John Hibey know the crypto world, your mileage may vary depending on familiarity with meme stocks and doxing, securities fraud and blockchain. I confess it’s all Greek to me. Films like Dumb Money took a more playful route to the little-guy investor bucking against capitalist chicanery,...

Rose Glass is back with a vengeance in her sweat-slick ode to American underbelly tales, Love Lies Bleeding. The Saint Maud filmmaker returns with a brawny psychological thriller that isn't afraid to get weird or take risks, which is both a warning and encouragement. Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian unsurprisingly flex their talents while wrestling with every twist and turn in Glass' queer criminal caper, gorgeously shot like high art meets a weightlifting competition. It's gritty like grip chalk and obscure in measured doses, comparable to something illicit like Jim Mickle's Cold in July splashed with Glass' exciting penchant for surrealist pops in an otherwise grounded narrative.
Kristen Stewart stars as reclusive Crater Gym manager Lou, who takes an immediate shine to the beefy and beautiful bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian). One thing leads to another, and Jackie ends up romantically entangled with Lou, shacked together while Jackie trains for a competition in Las Vegas.

Paris-based The Party Film Sales has boarded renowned Icelandic auteur Rúnar Rúnarsson’s fourth pic, “When the Light Breaks,” which is selected for Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market’s works in progress session.
Rúnarsson serves as producer together with Heather Millard of Iceland’s Compass Films, in co-production with local banner Halibut, Holland’s Revolver, France’s Eaux Vives/Jour2Fête and Croatia’s MP Film.
Lauded for his coming-of age tales set against Iceland’s majestic scenery, Rúnarsson saw his international breakthrough in 2008 with his Oscar-nominated short “Two Birds.” Since then, he has delivered equally poetic fare in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2011 entry “Volcano,” San Sebastian 2015 winner “Sparrows “ and 2019 Valladolid and Lübeck fest winner “Echo.”
As in his earlier works, Rúnarsson was inspired by a personal event for “When the Light Breaks”. “Ever since experiencing the loss of a friend as a young man, I wanted to deal with the...

Twenty years later, it’s fair to argue that Elf is the last great Christmas movie. This Jon Favreau classic, which also marked a significant turning point in Will Ferrell’s career, came out during a holiday season that was awash in memorable Yuletide flicks, with adult-skewing audiences getting to spike their eggnog via Love Actually and Bad Santa. Yet in addition to being the only one of those three films that was suitable for the whole family, Elf has also aged the best. The movie, is in fact, magic.
There are more than a few reasons why Elf works as well as it does. Favreau’s choice to use intentionally antiquated stop-motion effects in the North Pole sequences, and therefore echo his own childhood memories of watching TV specials like Rankin/Bass’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), still charms. Whereas many other big budget Santa movies of the 1990s and...

Driving down Las Vegas Boulevard today looks a lot different than it did a few weeks ago. Obstructed are the many sights that bring 40 million-plus people to the city every year. There are no Bellagio Fountains to see, no showgirls and Elvises posing for pictures, no gondoliers in the canals of Venice and no flashing marquees advertising nightly residency shows. The iconic thoroughfare now transports its travelers into a scene out of Grand Prix the movie with fencing and race barrier walls ensconcing the multi-lane public road. All this as the Strip is in its final transformation to become the Las Vegas Strip Circuit for the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, which takes place on Saturday night, Nov. 18. Rigs with high-wattage lighting run the 3.8 mile course, which stretches from Koval Lane to Sands Avenue and down Las Vegas Boulevard to Harmon Avenue. Deadpool director Tim Miller is used to bringing strange characters to life on the silver screen. Still, this time, he’s wrangling an extensive cast for an adaptation of Alien Legion, a science-fiction comic book series created by Carl Potts, Alan Zelenetz, and Frank Cirocco. Warner Bros. recently acquired the rights to Alien Legion, which Potts refers to as The Foreign Legion in space or The Dirty Dozen meets Aliens.

Warner Bros. is building its own galaxy that is far, far away.
The studio has picked up the rights to Alien Legion, a star-spanning, sci-fi comic initially published by Marvel Comics, with the aim of building a homegrown space opera franchise.

The rise of the Soulslike genre has, in some ways, defined the modern era of gaming. Like the Fps and Open-World genres before it, the Soulslike genre was born from the desires of its time and rebellion towards many industry trends. Of course, like the other greatest gaming genres, some Soulslike games are simply better than others.
Before we get into that, though, it’s important to define what a Souslike game is. While there is plenty of room for debate when formatting the exact definition of a Soulslike game, most entries into the genre feature some of these design elements:
– An emphasis on difficulty
– A checkpoint system that respawns enemies
– Role-playing elements that offer opportunities for character growth
– Encouraging player death to learn mechanics/environment navigation
– Indirect information related to narrative elements and gameplay mechanics
– Combat systems that focus on memorizing enemy movement and attack patterns

"Star Trek: Enterprise" was originally intended to be a lot more low-tech than it was. "Enterprise" is set roughly a century prior to the original "Star Trek," and show co-creator Brannon Braga initially conceived of a series that was a lot more earthbound. There were to be no transporters, no phasers, and -- perhaps most controversially -- no trekking. Braga wanted the bulk of the show's first season to take place entirely on Earth as the Enterprise is built and humanity prepares for its first extended mission into space. Paramount, however, didn't like Braga's ideas, feeling that the Enterprise needed to be launched in the pilot. Also transporters. Also phasers. Recognizable Trek iconography was required. Braga reached a compromise by including transporters, but stating that it was still a new technology unsafe for human use. And, yes, Enterprise officers carried phasers.
Paramount wasn't happy with just those cosmetic additions, however.

Do enough profiles or conduct enough interviews, and you develop a sixth sense that tingles when your subject utters words you know would make a good lede. Sometimes in that moment it’s hard to resist a tiny fist-pump.
Errol Morris’ new documentary The Pigeon Tunnel begins with such a moment. David Cornwell, known to the world at large as John le Carré, pauses and asks Morris about the role that the filmmaker hopes to play in their conversation.
“You need to know something about the ambitions of the people you’re talking to,” Cornwell observes.
Morris, of course, is a director so invested in the interaction between interviewer and subject that he developed a piece of technology dubbed the Interrotron to facilitate conversations more freely. It’s hard to imagine there’s anything he enjoys more than epistemological chatter of this sort — with the possible exception of finding himself...
