Call Me by Your Name, Get Out and Lady Bird all had great showings at the 2018 Independent Spirit Award nominations!
The nominees were announced on Tuesday morning, with the Armie Hammer-ledCall Me by Your Name leading the pack with six nominations, followed closely by Jordan Peele's critically acclaimed, genre-bending thriller Get Out with five, and Lady Bird, with four.
All three films are competing for Best Picture, along with The Florida Project and The Rider. The Independent Spirit Awards are sometimes seen as a tea leaf for how the Academy Awards will sway -- the Best Picture winner of this show has gone on to also earn the distinction at the Oscars for five out of the last six years.

When “Moulin Rouge!” opened the 54th Cannes Film Festival in 2001, critics either fell in love with its over-the-top pop spectacle or disregarded it as all style and no substance. It was basically your quintessential Baz Luhrmann movie, but it took the box office by storm and charmed enough Oscar voters to land eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Nicole Kidman.

The 2017 Academy Awards ceremony was a largely apolitical affair, but Gael Garcia Bernal changed that. Co-presenting the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, he acknowledged the current tension with the Trump Administration over immigration issues, specifically as they pertained to Mexico. “As a Mexican, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I’m against any form of wall that separates us,” he said.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Bomb, bomb bomb bomb, Boooooomb! Things just kept getting worse and worse at the box office as this past weekend saw more new releases not meeting up to their potential. The horribly-reviewed horror movie Rings (Paramount) ended up around where I predicted with $13 million, taking second place to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split. The sci-fi romance The Space Between Us (Stx Entertainment) didn’t make much of a mark, opening in ninth place with just $3.8 million with about $1,300 per theater. Robert De Niro’s The Comedian (Sony Classics) tanked worse than many recent movies, making less than a million in 848 theaters or about $1,000 per theater. By comparison, the doc I Am Not Your Negro made about 78% of that amount in 800 less theaters.

For the second year in a row, the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (Galeca) have rallied around an obvious favorite: “Moonlight.” Last year, Todd Haynes’s “Carol” swept Galeca’s Dorian Awards, and from its prominence amongst the nominees announced today, “Moonlight” will likely do the same.

Judging by its very strong Oscar chances, the enthusiasm for “Moonlight” has overshadowed all other worthy queer films. “The Handmaiden” was notably absent from the Oscar short list for Best Foreign Language Film, and the other three Dorian nominees are not in contention at all.

Oh, man, oh, man, oh, man. What an episode this was.
While I admired the first five episodes of the season for the unique and interesting format it presented, the actual plot moved along so slowly that I almost dreaded each coming entry. Episode 4 of this season marked an all-time low for the season, and was little more than an info dump for all the goings-on around the mysterious house. Episode 5 gave us some hope that there would be some big changes, and Episode 6 delivered on that hope.

It was early in the development of The Americans that the head of FX told the show’s creator what his series was really about — and was absolutely right. Joe Weisberg had planned to generate drama in the fake marriage between deep cover spies Philip and Elizabeth Jennings on ideological grounds: Philip was beginning to feel too comfortable in America, while Elizabeth stayed true to her Mother Russian roots. Then in a meeting with FX executives, FX CEO John Landgraf proposed adding another layer to things. “John had the idea that it would be very powerful and effective if Philip were really more in love with Elizabeth than Elizabeth were with Philip,” Weisberg said. “And you know how central that has become to the whole story of the show and the marriage. (The ideological argument) seemed like a good solid idea for what would create tension in the marriage, but...

Mr. Robot and The People v. O.J. Simpson both had strong first seasons and have the nominations to prove it — they are tied with four each, including Program of the Year — but who do they have to beat? Also up for Program of the Year are The Americans, Fargo, Game of Thrones, Making a Murderer, and UnREAL. Mr. Robot also snagged a nomination for Outstanding New Program along with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Master of None, Underground, and UnREAL. It's another strong category; Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Master of None, and UnREAL each got three total nominations. The big network winner? HBO, of course, with 12 total nominations. The Americans, Season 3, Episode 12: “I Am Abassin Zadran”
Written by Peter Ackerman & Stuart Zicherman
Directed by Christopher Misiano
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm (Et) on FX
In its third season, The Americans has made its scope wider, moving beyond the emotional focus of the Jennings to take a broader view of those affected by the Cold War. After the spotlight on Phillip and Elizabeth revealing their secret to Paige in “Stingers,” last week’s “One Day In The Life Of Anton Baklanov” examined a variety of elements in the drama’s universe, to less claustrophobic but still tense effect. “I Am Abassin Zadran” finds an effective compromise between the two, developing disparate aspects of The Americans while still giving the episode a moving center, which, if not quite on the level of the Paige reveal, certainly leaves viewers with their heart in their throat. That core, obviously, is Martha, and...

This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations for the 72nd Annual Golden Globes. Again we have Birdman at the head of the pack, earning seven nominations (all categories it was eligible for), including Best Picture – Comedy/Musical, Best Director, Best Actor – Comedy/Musical, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Boyhood and The Imitation Game followed behind with five nods apiece, which included Best Picture – Drama, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay.
There weren’t any particularly surprising inclusions in this morning’s nominations, as nearly everything we expected to be here made it in. What’s perhaps most surprising of all is that Angelina Jolie’s war drama Unbroken, a film that was expected to fetch at least a little recognition, was completely shut out. Nor did we see the music drama Whiplash take more than its most expected nod for Best Supporting Actor.

The Golden Globes spread the wealth among this year’s films and TV series when nominations were announced this morning. The group that picked last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner 12 Years A Slave has tapped IFC Films’ Boyhood, Sony Classics’ Foxcatcher, the Weinsteins’ The Imitation Game, Paramount’s Selma and Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything in its top drama race, with most everything going to form in the major acting categories.
The Best Motion Picture Comedy race includes Fox Searchlight’s Birdman, the Alexander Gonzales Inarritu-directed pic that led the way yesterday at the SAG Awards. It did so this morning, too, with seven nominations followed by five apiece from Boyhood and Imitation Game. That helped give Searchlight a leading 12 noms total — it also had Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which also scored a Best Comedy/Musical nom as did Disney’s Into The Woods, the...

Even if you’ve never seen them, if you’re a horror fan, you’ve likely heard something about both Night of the Demons, as well as Witchboard. Witchboard being the lesser known title. Both film spawned several sequels that ranged from great, to “well, there were boobs.” Both films were brought to us by the same director, which shows in some ways, but not enough to feel derivative. Another thing these films have in common, is that I have only seen them both a couple of times, and all of that was from rental VHS copies. It’s not that I didn’t like them enough to purchase them on DVD when they made the switch, it’s just that when you’re managing such a huge collection, it’s hard to remember every title you’ve ever liked enough to make it your own. In 2012, CBS premiered a new show about two odd-couple male pals. It was called Partners, and on the surface, it seemed to have everything going for it—a prime slot following How I Met Your Mother, a great pedigree courtesy of two ’90s sitcom wizards (it was created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan of Will & Grace fame), two charismatic stars (Michael Urie and David Krumholtz). Even so, Partners failed to gain traction. Critics griped that its old-fashioned jokes were tired rather than appealingly retro; just a few weeks into the 2012-2013 TV season, it became one of the first shows to get the ax.

It’s almost hard to remember a time when the vampire genre was dead.
It was before Twilight, of course. Before the film version of Stephenie Meyer’s novel was released in 2008 to the sound of millions of squees, vampire movies were considered somewhat risky investments and TV networks rarely ordered shows starring the undead. Since the conclusion of The WB’s Angel in 2004, there was FX’s Blade: The Series (flop) and CBS’ Moonlight (flop). As far as results-show telecasts go, The Voice has just about gotten its formula down pat: Plenty of musical performances, kind and gentle quotes like “two people are gonna have to go home tonight who don’t deserve to go home” (thanks, Blake!) and the absence of Christina Milian’s signature dingbattery from the Sprint Skybox.

I had a pretty horrific nightmare on Wednesday night, after I got home from the comic book shop. I dreamt that I was Back in the comic book shop, looking for issues of the ongoing series currently being reviewed in this column. Anything would do; ‘Hinterkind’, ‘The Fox’, ‘Pretty Deadly’, ‘Letter 44′, anything… but as I scanned the “New This Week” rack, I found myself in a panic; There Was Nothing! Not a single ongoing title! Surely, I thought, I wasn’t look closely enough. But my intensified search was for naught; it was as I feared. I had no choice but to resort to picking up three New titles to review. Confidently, I once again perused the rack of fresh titles of the day, and the pit in my stomach sank to a depth beyond what I’d ever known. I Beg Of You, I screamed silently to the comic book gods,...

Im Global is forming partnerships that reach way beyond its original incarnation. When founder Stuart Ford launched the company in 2007, we had not realized the real meaning of the name Im Global.
What was known from its inception was that the company was one of the leading film financing, production, sales and distribution companies in the world. But when Reliance Entertainment, part of the Indian conglomerate Reliance Ada Group, acquired a majority shareholding in the company in May 2010, the word Global took on new meaning.
Not only did they claim to champion a wide variety of cinema, including mainstream commercial, art house, foreign language and genre fare with their offices in Los Angeles, London, and Mumbai, but their diversification has since expanded to include its newest partnership with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and in Berlin 2013 its partnership with Canana (Who is Dayani Cristal?, Sin Nombre, Miss Bala), forming a 50-50 joint venture called Mundial.
Dedicated to international sales of Latin American cinema, Mundial will handle international sales for 8 to 10 Latin American titles per year. The company has picked up three films thus far: Mariana Chenillo's Paraiso, which begins shooting in January; Cannes winner Michael Rowe's new film Manto Acuifero; and Mr. Pig, Diego Luna's fourth work as a director.
Luna, along with fellow actor Gael Garcia Bernal and producer Pablo Cruz, are co-founders of Canana. Under the agreement, Mundial will handle Canana productions.
Mundial's board comprises Im Global CEO Stuart Ford, Canana executives Cruz and Julian Levy, and Im Global's president of international sales and distribution, Jonathan Deckter.
Canana is also part of ParticipantPanamerica, a brilliant production partnership Participant, teaming together Canana,
Chile’s Fabula (Gloria, Young and Wild) of the fabulous Lorrain brothers who made No (with Participant) as well as Sebastian Silva’s best films to date, Colombia’s Dynamo (Undertow, The Hidden Face).
Aside from these two new startup joint ventures, there are other arms:
Im Global Opus: Mainstream, commercial cinema targeted at the multiplex audience.
Im Global Acclaim: Critically acclaimed arthouse and specialty cinema.
Im Global Anthem: The best of non-English language cinema from around the world.
Im Global Octane: Branded genre fare.
Im Apsara: A rights acquisition and distribution vehicle that serves the rapidly evolving Asian markets.
In addition there is the 3rd joint venture, Automatik: A production and financing joint venture with E1 Entertainment focused on films in the $5 million - $15 million range.
When I think of Stuart Ford now, I understand the I Am Global moniker! Good work!!

We're suckers for anthology films around these parts, and another is getting ready to make its DVD premiere in May. Sit down, put on your poker face (not that Lady Gaga shit either), and get ready to play a few hands with The Dark Dealer.
From the Press Release
Mvd Visual and Whacked Movies are proud to announce the release of The Dark Dealer, a feature length horror anthology, starring Richard Hull (She's All That, American Psycho II), Rocky Patterson (The Nail Gun Massacre, Repligator), and Charles Carrol (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) and directed by Tom Alexander.
The Dark Dealer is a quirky supernatural thriller about three hell-bound characters gambling with their lives and souls in a game of blackjack with the devil. This indie horror film is in the vein of Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt. Like other classic horror anthologies of the past, The Dark Dealer blends supernatural horror,...

Army Wives has added another recurring player as the show revamps itself in its seventh season. Brant Daugherty will appear as a recent West Point graduate and a love interest for one of the new Wives, according to Deadline. If Daugherty looks familiar to you, it might be because he appeared on Days of Our Lives as the guy who had an interest in Sonny just when Will wasn't sure how out he could be on? You know, the guy who made us question our loyalty to WilSon before that story could get going? (Our interview with Brant Daugherty here.)
As pilot season news continues, ABC is adapting another Britcom, this time hiring Rob Corddry to star in an adaptation of Spy, about a single father who accidentally gets hired by the secret service.

"American Horror Story: Asylum" might be wrapping up in a matter of days, but showrunners Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are already hard at work on Season 3. The series is set to air in the fall and it's already been announced that Jessica Lange is going to return, but beyond that only a handful of other details have been revealed.
While Murphy might not be ready to unveil what Season 3 is going to be about just yet, he did spoil some elements of the show during a Q&A session with reporters. He still hasn't pitched the season's story to FX yet, but he and the writers are getting to work on the new episodes starting Jan. 21. Here are some important things Murphy's already decided about the third installment of his hit FX horror miniseries:
