The 2014 Olympics officially came to an end Sunday night, with an impressive closing ceremony featuring the three Sochi mascots, dancers and a journey through Russian culture.
The Sochi closing ceremonies were elaborate, filled with detailed sets and beautiful lighting tricks. The closing ceremony featured a lot of dancing, including a group of people who formed the five Olympic rings on the floor. Proving Russia is not without a sense of humor, the fifth ring failed to open for a short moment before finally opening and completing the Olympic sign – something that failed to happen at the opening ceremonies when the fifth ring failed to open.
Olympians then paraded out, to roars from the crowds, each country again in their national uniforms. USA’s Julie Chu from the Women’s Ice Hockey Team carried the flag through the parade.

In an attempt to soften the blow of the Us losing every event on Saturday, NBC spent much of its primetime coverage on non-competition videos. The first was a story about an American paralympic swimmer, Jessica Tatiana Long, meeting her Russian birth parents for the first time. A story that NBC felt couldn’t be told without clips of Anastasia. (Makes sense to me.)

Olympians remembered one of their fallen comrades during the halfpipe finals on Thursday night. Canadian Sarah Burke was honored in a fitting tribute as a formation of skiers created a heart on the snowy slope of Sochi, over two years after her death. "She would be smiling down on the Olympic Games and everything that is going on around it. She is an inspiration, and she would absolutely be smiling," Burke's husband, Rory Bushfield, told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview before he left for the Olympics earlier this month. In one of the most emotional moments of the Winter Olympics, the women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe medalists pointed at the sky from the podium in honor of fallen competitor Sarah Burke. Halfpipe workers, meanwhile, skied in a heart shape in her memory. Burke, a Canadian four-time X Games champion who pushed to get the event into the games, died in training in 2012 without ever getting to see the event debut in Sochi. Her colleagues and competitors had wanted to wear stickers on their helmets to honor her, but the the International Olympic Committee determined that they were a political.

Showing love to Sarah Burke! The late Canadian freestyle skier was honored at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Thursday, Feb. 20. If it wasn’t for Sarah Burke, there might not have been a ski halfpipe event to compete in at the Winter Olympics this year. Burke, who died before she could realize her dreams of competing in the event on the Olympic stage, was celebrated by her fellow skiers on Thursday in a moving tribute.
Sarah Burke's Tribute At Sochi
Had Burke been alive, she’d have been the favorite to win the gold in the first-ever Olympic ski halfpipe. Rising to the occasion to capture the medal in her absence was American Maddie Bowman. Once on the podium, with the medal around her neck, Bowman raised her arms upwards, towards the skies.
“Sarah Burke is watching over us tonight. We just want to honor her as much as we can,” explained Bowman to NBC Sports.
France's Marie Martinod, who placed second, pointed up as well. “I pointed to...

The USA gained another gold medal on Feb. 19, when Ted Ligety, 29, finished in first place in the men’s giant slalom event. Americans celebrated the sweet victory but Ted’s reaction was even sweeter!
It was his second career gold medal in the event, but Ted Ligety wanted this victory more than anything. The skier from Park City, Utah had been waiting for years for this moment, and he finished Wednesday’s giant slalom event in a fittingly dramatic way.

Ashley Wagner probably won’t win an individual medal in Sochi. But there’s got to be some sort of award for her faces — she’s as animated as Jim Carrey in The Mask, only without the benefit of, you know, actual animation. Need even more proof? Let’s start things off by counting down Ashley’s top 5 expressions while receiving her disappointing short program score:
1. ”Umm, exqueeze me? Baking powder?”
2. ”Yo, are you hearing this? Tell me you’re hearing this.”
3. ”Oh crap, am I supposed to look like a CoverGirl right now?”
4. ”Eyyyy!”
5. ”Whatever, I’m so over it.

Miracle on Ice, Part Two? In an intense battle at the Winter Olympics, the United States upset the home team Russia on Feb. 15 — all because of a baby-faced star from Washington.
Three periods and an overtime wasn’t enough to determine a winner in the heated hockey matchup between Russia and the United States on Feb. 15. It came down to a shootout, and one American skater in particular, T.J. Oshie, made sure that the U.S. would not be denied.

The top video sharing site has debuted its Team USA hub, which will provide behind-the-scenes news and features on the American athletes who will travel to Sochi, Russia to compete with the world's best. Therefore, it is going for the next best thing: The sort of human interest stories that give Americans a reason to watch sports like curling and luge that would otherwise never cross our radars. Here's the second episode of one of the hub's first web series, which follows alpine skier Ted Ligety as he prepares for his assault on the Russian slopes.

Arriving amid debates about brain injuries in organized sports, Oscar-nominated documentarian Lucy Walker's The Crash Reel is a timely profile of professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce, whose career was cut short by a calamitous fall on the same half-pipe that killed fellow Olympic hopeful Sarah Burke.
The Crash Reel movingly captures the athlete's difficult acceptance of the fact that he can no longer practice the sport that made him a world champion. Pearce was a contender for a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics when he was knocked unconscious by a fall.
"You need to be prepared for the Kevin who comes back not to be the same Kevin," his father recalls being told. A shot of a 22-year-old Pearce recovering in the hospital shows him in a neck brace, h...

Canadian skier and filmmaker Rory Bushfield won the first-ever Splash championship trophy on Tuesday's season finale by out-diving his fellow finalists, actor Drake Bell and actress Nicole Eggert.
He talked to People Wednesday about his victory, forging on after suffering a ruptured eardrum and how he continues to draw inspiration from his late wife, skier Sarah Burke.
Congratulations! You have quite the trophy from the show.
Oh yes, I carry it everywhere with me! I don't know what I'm going to do with that big trophy.
What was the best part of your Splash experience?
The best part was the people involved.

As extreme skier Rory Bushfield (pictured, with Baywatch’s Nicole Eggert) said, “I don’t think any skier would be impressed if I got beat by a couple of actors.” So who, in the hilarious words of Joey Lawrence’s cohost Charissa Thompson, was crowned “the greatest celebrity diver of all-time in our first-ever Splash grand finale?”
Rory Bushfield! He defeated Eggert and Drake & Josh’s Drake Bell to hoist the crystal Splash trophy at the end of what a relatively straight-faced Lawrence referred to as “the most electrifying diving competition on earth.” Bell finally managed to do an inward...

The final two celebrities for "Splash" have been announced and you may be surprised -- one of them you wouldn't expect to see on a reality diving competition and one of them you've maybe never heard of.
NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and extreme skier Rory Bushfield are joining Ndamukong Suh, Katherine Webb, Louie Anderson and more as the celebrities competing in an Olympic diving competition on ABC for "Splash."
Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and towers over his "Splash" competition from a height of 7'2". Bushfield is a 29-year-old extreme skier who was married to Winter X Games gold medalist skier Sarah Burke until her tragic death in 2012 after a crash during a training session.
"Splash" premieres Tuesday, March 19 on ABC. Hopefully they're being safe -- Louie Anderson has already had to be rescued once.

It should go without saying that to be an athlete on just about any level, one must have a fairly high threshold for pain. But freeskier Bobby Brown takes it to the extreme.
Nearly three years ago in Alaska, the four-time X Games gold medalist landed the sport's first triple-cork 1260 (that's 3 1/2 rotations) two months after fracturing his pelvis and three vertebrae during a backcountry film shoot.
"It was just a way faster recovery than I thought," Brown, who will be among the 200 athletes in Aspen, Colo., competing in the 2013 Winter X Games, which air Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 24-27, on Espn, tells Zap2it. "It wasn't completely broken. It was a pretty serious fracture, and then I fractured three vertebrae in my back, and I just got cleared from the doctors and after like three months was good to go and just kind of put it out of my mind and felt great.

An extreme sports filmmaker who loved snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and paragliding is dead after a fatal paragliding crash near the Santa Clara River in Ventura County, Calif.
Brent Butzke, of Malibu, Calif., was flying a motorized paraglider on Nov. 20 when someone on the ground saw the craft in distress, reports the Ventura County Star. The witness called 911, but it was too late -- Butzke crashed, and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene. He was 27.
John Greynald, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara-based Soaring Association, told the Ventura County Star that motorized paragliding accidents are actually quite rare, but that it requires a lot more skill to operate than a regular hang glider.
"If enthusiasts get a motorized rig without basic training, they are basically not learning how to fly the wing that motor is attached to," Greynald said to the Ventura County Star. "If you're going to get on a motorcycle,...
