Exclusive: Netflix has invested in Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones’ new production outfit Broke And Bones in a first-of-its-kind deal for the streamer in the UK, which could ultimately see it take full control of the company for around $100M, Deadline can reveal.
Sources said the agreement with five-time Emmy winners Brooker and Jones’ new venture has been 12 months in the making due to its unusual structure, and is a massive statement of intent about Netflix’s commitment to working with British creators. The UK is second only to the U.S. in feeding original content to Netflix’s 190M subscribers.
Quietly signed a number of weeks ago, Deadline understands that Netflix has the right to acquire Broke And Bones in chunks over a five-year period, giving the streamer exclusivity over the Brits’ new series and interactive projects. Although the deal could ultimately rise to nine figures,...

Exclusive: Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, the creators of Netflix drama Black Mirror, have established a new production outfit just days after quitting their Endemol Shine Group company House Of Tomorrow.
The pair set up Broke And Bones last week, each taking a 50% stake in the company, which is set to be the vehicle through which the British creatives produce their future work.
They have been in protracted negotiations with Netflix about an exclusive deal, but to continue making Black Mirror, Netflix would effectively need to buy out the rights to the show from Endemol Shine, in what could be a lucrative deal for the production group.
Talks are continuing, Deadline understands, and Brooker has spoken about his desire to continue making the anthology drama, which has run for five seasons on Channel 4 and Netflix, scooping six Emmys.

Exclusive: Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker and his closest collaborator Annabel Jones have left their Endemol Shine Group production label House Of Tomorrow, as they continue talks with Netflix about an overall deal.
Deadline can reveal that the pair resigned last year, and after serving out their notice period, they formally stepped down from their positions as House Of Tomorrow directors on Friday, according to a notice on the UK’s Companies House.
Brooker and Jones have been in negotiations with Netflix about an exclusive deal since last year. If an agreement were to include further episodes of Black Mirror, there would have to be negotiations about the rights to the show, which still reside with Endemol Shine — regardless of the creators’ resignation from House Of Tomorrow.
Brooker and Jones’ departure ends a long association with Endemol Shine. They launched House Of Tomorrow in 2014 and before that were aligned to...

Sky is developing a police comedy starring Rogue One’s Daniel Mays from Broadchurch and Tin Star indie Kudos.
I hear the pay-tv giant is making a non-tx pilot, which has the working title of Code 404, written by Horrible Histories and Not Going Out writer Daniel Peak and is being co-produced by Water and Power Productions.
Directed by Ben Palmer, who previously helmed The Inbetweeners and David Mitchell and Robert Webb comedy Back, the broadcaster is currently deciding whether to take the project to full series.
The full details of the police project have been kept under wraps, but I’m told the narrative comedy has a similar tone to Charlie Brooker’s A Touch of Cloth, the spoof cop comedy that ran on Sky One in 2012. Phil Temple and Diederick Santer exec produce for Kudos and Sam Myer exec produces for Water and Power.

Netflix’s new six-part series Godless is a captivating take on the Western genre. Here's our spoiler-free review...
In the gun-slinging Old West of Netflix’s new six-part series Godless, the most piercing weapon a man could wield is the empty promise of religion. Settlers and profit-seekers might believe in manifest destiny, but in a land ruled by the ruthless, prayers will go unanswered. Absent a higher power, the townsfolk of Godless live in fear of a figure who uses blunt intimidation to his advantage. And there’s no one more up for the task than Jeff Daniels, who plays a gruff, one-armed madman named Frank Griffin.

With sci-fi takes on different genres—comedic satire, survival horror, romance, military action and detective mystery—and one episode with no future tech at all, Black Mirror plays with perspective and examines what distinguishes the real from the virtual, the impossibility of authentic relationships when social interaction has become an economy, and what might cause us to knowingly opt for inauthenticity over reality.

UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).

In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

We chatted to Charlie Brooker, Jon Hamm and Rafe Spall about tech dystopia Black Mirror’s terrific festive episode, White Christmas…
This interview contains a spoiler for, er, The Snowman.
Airing tonight on Channel 4 is White Christmas, a feature-length episode of Black Mirror that weaves together three tech-paranoia tales set against the backdrop of the festive season. Writer Charlie Brooker likens the special to a selection box - a sound description if you can imagine Cadbury’s substituting Crunchies and Curly Wurlies for tragicomic ruminations on voyeurism, torture and ostracisation.
It’s a terrific ninety minutes; funny, acerbic and eventually horrifying. It feels exactly like watching a condensed series of Black Mirror in a single sitting, which should be both recommendation and warning to fans of the show. However disturbing a reflection of our world Brooker shows us though, in his own words, “There’s nothing in that that...

The feature-length Black Mirror festive episode, a swipe at our social media age, now has a Jon Hamm-heavy trailer...
If Christmas specials often mark the time to go slightly easier on your characters and give them a nice cushty holiday, Charlie Brooker didn't get the memo.
Indeed, the best Christmas episodes are often the ones that shy away from conventional stuff and continue trying to tell the best story. We'd wager that Black Mirror: White Christmas is one of these, with a trailer showing how unflappably dark, cutting and serious the episode is.
With more Jon Hamm holding a slice of toast than you could shake a fistful of Sainsbury's giraffe bread at (yes, we did just speculate about which type of bread Brooker has deployed), here's the trailer...

This time, it's personal, the synopsis would have you believe. Team leader Barney (Sylvester Stallone) and his mercenary mates take on the Expendables' co-founder, now a ruthless arms trader (Mel Gibson) with his heart set on ending the legacy he helped create.
Of course, if you've come to see The Expendables 3 with even the slightest of critical faculties in operation, you'll be too busy sniggering at the ridiculous names - Gibson's villainous character is called Conrad Stonebanks – or cheering on our mildly xenophobic leads to devote much attention to the plot. Which is really what Stallone, co-writer Creighton Rothenberger and director Patrick Hughes want.
It's a scattershot, often dull, incompetently shot but lazily entertaining sequel that knows exactly what its audience wants. The soundbites have been dialed down from the incomprehensibility of the second film in the franchise but with a ‘set-piece, interlude, set-piece’ structure and a central cast who are in their groove,...

Charlie Brooker led a Q&A panel for the upcoming third series of A Touch of Cloth at London's BFI South Bank last night (July 29).
Joined by stars John Hannah, Suranne Jones and director Jim O'Hanlon, we and other lucky guests got to hear about the filming of Too Cloth for Comfort, to air on Sky1 on August 9. Here are just a few things we learnt from the spoof cop show screening:
1. Detective TV drama research involves hours of DVD compilations
Brooker revealed that he and his team of writers spent many hours watching DVDs of different cop show staples, including morgue scenes and interrogations. "The fun thing about this is that we write it as a team," he said.
"We sit there and we get compilation DVDs made of moments from detective dramas. So we're not watching the full shows, but shattered moments, so like an hour of morgue scenes.

Charlie Brooker has set up a new production company with Annabel Jones.
Operating as part of Endemol UK, House of Tomorrow will produce films and TV shows for UK and international markets.
Brooker will serve as creative director, while Jones, who has worked as executive producer on many of Brooker's shows, will operate as managing director.
"The one thing the world doesn't need is yet more entertainment, but unfortunately for the world that's what we're hell-bent on producing," said Brooker.
"We'll produce fun in all its guises, whether that be the laugh-a-minute gaiety of Black Mirror, the show-stopping musical stylings of Weekly Wipe, or some hitherto-untested form of amusement that just about fits on a screen."
Jones said that the pair hope to capitalise on the international success of Black Mirror, before calling it an "exciting time" for original drama and comedy.

Todd Carty has reportedly signed up for a return to Dancing on Ice.
The former EastEnders actor is said to have agreed a deal to appear as a contestant in the ITV show's final series in January, according to The Sun.
The dancing competition will come to an end in 2014, with professional skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean confirming their departure back in the summer.
Some of the show's best-loved contestants from past series are tipped to compete once again.
Todd Carty became a popular contestant back in 2009, when he spectacularly stumbled off set during a routine.
Former Hear'Say singer and 2008 winner Suzanne Shaw is also said to have signed a deal to return, along with 2010 champion Hayley Tamaddon.
Carty recently appeared as a fictional version of himself in Charlie Brooker's A Touch of Cloth.

It's now been eight months since he filmed his final scenes as Hollyoaks favourite Brendan Brady, but actor Emmett Scanlan is as busy as ever with a new part on BBC Three zombie drama In The Flesh and a second series of BBC Two's The Fall on the way.
Digital Spy caught up with Emmett this week for an in-depth chat about his new projects, life after soapland and whether he'd ever be tempted to revisit the role of Brendan…
How did you become involved with In The Flesh and what attracted you to the show?
"Doing In The Flesh was a no-brainer for me, no pun intended. I was asked to come in and read for this new character that the show's writer Dominic Mitchell was developing - Simon, one of the disciples of the Undead Prophet. Dominic is a fantastic writer. His spin on the zombie genre is so unique and so layered,...

Review Louisa Mellor 25 Aug 2013 - 22:00
The BBC’s new four-part whodunit starring David Threlfall, Indira Varma, and Russell Tovey is grim stuff…
This review contains spoilers.
Episode one of What Remains presents us with a game of Cluedo. A woman’s body is discovered in the loft of a shared address, but who killed her, and with what? Was it the maths teacher with the rope? The journalist with the candlestick? Or the lesbian with the lead piping?
We’ll find out over the course of the next three episodes thanks to David Threlfall’s drowsy old-school detective, Len Harper, a widowed tortoise in a leather jacket determined to solve the case despite it landing in his in-tray on his - yes, really - last day on the force. (At least, we hope he’s going to solve it. Since one woman had to point to her roundly pregnant...
