A great film
KobusAdAstra20 October 2016
We are treated to four different yet interwoven stories; the common denominator being that they deal with being gay and gay relationships.

In one story we meet an elderly closeted gay poet, Joaquín (Alonso Echánove); he is married, with a seemingly happy wife and daughters. He is smitten by a young male prostitute, Gilberto (Alejandro Belmonte) he meets in a bath-house.

In a second story we get an example of a long-term (ten year) gay relationship that is starting to fall apart. Unfaithful Hugo (Antonio Velásquez) is involved in an affair with another man. His sensitive partner, Andrés (Alejandro de la Madrid) is trying his best to save their relationship.

The relationship between two young gay men is put under pressure in a third story; Leo (Gustavo Egelhaaf) is closeted and scared to reveal his sexual orientation, whilst Fito (César Ramos) does not want to remain in the closet any longer. This leads to tension.

In the fourth story a clearly gay boy, Mauricio (Gabriel Santoyo) develops a crush on his older cousin, Oliver (Sebastián Rivera). Mauricio desperately wants to get closer to Oliver, but it is a risky move; what if Oliver is straight and homophobic?

The director, Sergio Tovar Velarde, effectively highlights some of the issues faced by gays: Social pressure resulting in fear and closeted lifestyles, a swinging lifestyle and promiscuity, and how hard it is to make a long-term relationship work. Furthermore, it shows us how a homophobic and intolerant society, fueled by the church, can result in bullying and assault.

I found the acting splendid, and so too the cinematography and soundtrack, and score 'Cuatro Lunas' an excellent 8/10.

Interesting for sure
ekeby14 July 2015
And interesting that (as of this writing) the one negative review here is from a Mexican who calls it the worst gay movie ever. He couldn't be more wrong. If you're reading this, reviewer, take a look at my reviews to find a selection of truly cringe-making gay movies. Try watching Regarding Billy, for example. Betcha can't make it all the way through.

Nevertheless, I think I know why someone from Mexico found this movie trite and a yawn. If you compare it to a Mexican movie like Y Tu Mama Tambien, yes, this is nowhere near that level. But it is competent, and it held my interest. Yes, it covers no new ground, but what is covered is done so in an interesting way.

Another reviewer points out how American this depiction of Mexico looks. Having lived in Mexico I would agree that most if not all of these homes would have had servants. I suspect the director felt that if servants were seen, European and US audiences would not find the characters as sympathetic. And he'd be right.

This is not a great film, but it is very good. I found nothing in this production to complain about. Well, all right, I didn't care much for the professor character or the actor who portrayed him. But maybe that's because (being in the same age bracket and out since Stonewall) I have little tolerance for closet cases--real or fictional--who have had their cake and now want to eat it.

There is a telenovista element to the story lines, but I think that's intentional. A scene where a mother's dry recitation to her son of a telenovela plot is very funny-and revealing. Let's face it. Gay life can be a telenovela.

From the Netflix description I too was expecting four short films. And I put off watching for that reason; it's not my favorite genre. But interwoven as they were worked well. I liked it. I think most American gay men will too.

Happy, emotional, tasteful gay flick
ohlabtechguy21 December 2019
Four gay themed plots with attractive, competent actors, and a decent script. OMG....none of the characters smoked....thank the lord. No drug fests either. But there were nude frontals and a bathhouse orgy. Nice to see masculine men displaying some hardcore emotional breakdowns, which tends to happen for two reasons....death of loved ones or the death of a romance. We find a bit of both, but mostly the latter in this film. Can't believe this was made in Mexico. Thank you.....this was free on Youtube in the USA.

Why can't the Gay Films in the U.S be this good?
michaeleb10253 April 2015
It amazes me with all the talent and money in Hollywood that Gay films are generally so lousy. Except for a couple of films like GBF and The Geography Club there have been almost no good gay films in the past year or so. There are big director pretentious movies like Philadelphia or Broke Back Mountain in the past, but we need something more real and less hysterically depressing. This film is sweetly wonderful and true to life. Watching is like hearing the stories of people I have known. The well chosen actors give beautiful performances. The story telling is almost perfect. Chemistry between the leads is excellent and believable. When someone starts talking up an American gay director who makes a lot of product that isn't very good and acts like people should settle for it, I would rather read subtitles and see a movie of this caliber instead. Some of the very best Gay films are coming from outside of our borders where gifted directors are making very good films without huge budgets or overpaid actors. I have seen some excellent Gay films this year, none of them come from Hollywood.

A journey for love
dineshkapoor12 July 2015
Gay cinema has reached an epitome, by walking hand in hand with director Sergio Tovar Velarde. Four Moons ( Cuatro Luna's ) is one the most beautiful yet perfect LGBTQ feature films I have seen in years. In comparison with films like The Normal Heart or Pride it doesn't bother to tell a story of struggle for rights. Its a nice blend of relationships and the time-line of sexuality. The movie has four different layers. Each and every layers poses a different timescale of life. In one those layers the director successfully portrait the fear and curiosity of a kid who has instinct for a same sex. The second luna tells when young individuals have dilemma between his own skin, his love and family responsibility. Its eventually the most relevant in our society and time. The pride and respect can precisely enter in this situation to make a dignified decision. The third layer is address the loyalty issue of gay relationship/ marriage. It also push gay men into an another degree to ask themselves that "what is the glue for a successful relation ?" Is this sex ?? or love can handle it perfectly. Director ends the third node in a situation where society can learn why the stigma should banished and so the judgmental mentality. The most captivating chapter of the movie deals with the gay men and aging. Aging is natural law, so the sexuality. But the stigma within the homosexual community about age is prominent. How a same sex also could be a inspiration for the poetic creation is cleverly captured in this celluloid.Gay poets like Oscar Wilde to Emily Dickinson has known about their keen towards creation, but may be the first time it has been filmed the inspiration behind those. In conclusion its a journey in a time machine in a homosexual stigmatized world in search of love. Its clearly convey its message as well as teach us about the priority and balance. I preach this movie to watch if you are homosexual. I believe you won't regret.

Extraordinarily ambitious and original
jm1070122 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
4 Moons is an extraordinarily ambitious and original movie that almost completely succeeds.

It is not a collection of short movies, but it tells four separate stories. Each story corresponds to one of the four phases of the moon: new, half waxing, full, and half waning; and each has a gay protagonist at a roughly corresponding time of life: late childhood, late teens or very early 20s, middle 30s, and old age. Each protagonist faces challenges typically faced by gay males at those times of life, but presented in entirely original ways.

As I said, this is a very ambitious movie - it attempts to give a comprehensive look at an entire lifetime of gay experiences. Not only that, but it does so with such originality that none of the four stories seemed like just a rehashing of the same old gay coming-out/mid-life-crisis/etc formulas. 4 Moons is fresh and new, not like any gay movie that came before it.

The stories are not arranged sequentially but are interwoven, switching between them periodically in a way that is never distracting. Although the stories are interwoven, they do not overlap at all, and only once does a character from one story even see a character from another. All four stories take place in an affluent, very American-looking part of Mexico City, among people who seem not to have to work but aren't so rich that they're surrounded by servants.

The writing and direction, and all technical aspects of the production, are uniformly excellent. I had no idea that the Mexican movie industry was as sophisticated as this movie is. The only thing that makes some stories better than others is the quality of the acting.

All the actors in the two younger stories are fantastic, as good as I've ever seen anywhere. The mid-30s "full moon" story has the weakest actors and suffers for it. It's the only one of the four that plays like an overwrought telenovela and therefore is unbelievable and tedious. Actors in the old-age story are good enough to keep it from sinking but not to make it shine as the first two stories do.

But those two "youth" stories (especially the one about the childhood friends who reconnect in college) - and the always excellent writing and direction - lift the whole movie far above 99% of its competition.

Maybe two or three moons would have been enough at one time
Suradit23 March 2015
Each of the four story plots were common themes fairly realistically presented. A very young boy gets "outted" to fellow students, school authorities and parents after he gets touchy-feely with a male cousin. A couple, one of whom is out and public about being gay, while the other is closeted and fearful of public exposure, deal with the conflicts their differences create between them. An elderly married man becomes fascinated with a straight hustler who is looking to raise money for a trip north to join his family. A long- term couple, one of whom has become disenchanted with their relationship, deal with a possible break up.

The story about the young boy and his parents is pretty straight forward, but lacks any depth or any originality. The resolution really only involves the father coming to terms with his son's apparent nature, and that resolution is particularly shallow and trite.

The story about the older man who (suddenly?) feels attracted to, actually obsessed about, another man he encounters in a steam room also seems a little hard to fathom as presented. One gets the impression that this is his first venture outside his marriage and his fidelity to wife and family. I suppose that's possible. The idea of someone coming out or acting upon a suppressed desire fairly late in life is a popular one in movies and television. But in this case, the one encounter appears to be a sufficient expression of that desire, followed by a return to the "traditional" wife and family as if the one experience satisfied the urge for all time. And exactly why the older man felt the need for the hustler to anonymously attend his award ceremony is a little baffling. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I never felt the rationale for it was established (the recording I watched had somewhat erratic audio and subtitles, so maybe I just missed it).

The other two stories seemed more complete and realistic to me, although their resolutions were a little too happily-ever-after and neatly packaged.

It is definitely worth watching, but possibly there was an attempt to achieve too much in too short a time. Maybe two or three moons would have allowed for a little more depth rather than all four moons at one go.

Four stories--all interesting.
Red-12524 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Mexican film Cuatro Lunas was shown in the U.S. with the title Four Moons (2014). It was directed by Sergio Tovar Velarde. (I'm not sure if the title refers to the fact that the movie depicts four separate stories, or takes place over four months, or both.)

Sometimes, a director will interweave the stories so that characters of one story interact with characters of the other stories. Not so here. Each story is independent, but the theme of all four stories is the same--difficulties face by gay men. The stories have an age separation: one is about a pre-adolescent, one about a college-age couple, one about a couple in midlife, and one about an elderly professor who is married, with grown children, but who still seeks love from a gay hustler.

I found all four stories to be realistic and very moving. I was especially impressed by the story of Joaquin, the professor, played by Alonso Echinove. He has been awarded a literary prize by a small college. It's obviously a pretty minor event, but it's the only award he's likely to receive. He pays the young hustler to attend, and the young man keeps his promise to be there.

We saw this film at The Little Theatre as part of ImageOut, the always impressive Rochester LGBT Film Festival. It will work well on DVD.

Mexican Telenovela style movie.
fabiog-26-3588854 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Technically speaking, the film seemed me like a telenovela. With time and performances OK for television, but not very elaborated for a film. Four parallel stories that look like they were there, all together, because of the director did not know whether he would again have budget to film them separately in the future. Anyway, I liked the story of Leo, Fito and his mother (great acting). The story of the boys from school, I found it hard to believe. We are in the twenty-first century (and looked like it was happening in the 70s). If at a school, a boy (or a group of boys) hit, that way, to another, for being gay, or whatever, he/them are sanctioned, and all adults defend the victim, but in this movie, everybody assume the argument of the perpetrator, as valid and, OK, the gay boy "something had done" to deserve that. The story of the poet grandfather was interesting though little credible. And the gay couple's story (the too gay styled couple), very boring and obvious, to me.

A Simply Superb film of love and acceptance from Mexico
t-dooley-69-3869168 May 2016
The synopsis is that we have four stories that are told in a linear narrative of four very separate and very different relationships. We have two old friends who had lost contact and get reunited and it is more than friendship that is rekindled. A young boy who falls for his cousin and he knows it is wrong for him to act on his impulses but the attraction is too strong.

There is also the story of an ageing and married poet who falls for a rent boy at the local sauna and the very real story of a couple who have been together where one feels it has gone very stale and does something about it. The link to the four tales are all about love and acceptance and are all about gay relationships.

To say anymore runs the risk of revealing the plot(s). However, there is so much crammed in here and not a single frame is wasted. It is at times painful, moving, touching and even funny. I was glued to the screen after a few minutes. It is 110 minutes long but feels much shorter and is in Spanish with the odd English thrown in and the sub titles are very good. This is from director Sergio Tovar Velarde and I tried t get hold of some of his other work and sadly not available in the UK. He made this in 2014 and has not made one since. I sincerely hope he does very soon – this is simply a fantastic film that I can only commend.

A disjointed yet resonant little film
pasaribuharisfadli28 July 2022
There are four interesting stories within 4 Moons that alas weren't smoothly interwoven. I blame in particular it's choppy editing. The stories can feel uneven and disjointed sometimes with most of them being rather underdeveloped or too simplistic.

More than 4 reasons to watch this movie
Haiduqque10 May 2016
This is one of the most enjoyable gay themed movies I've watched. In "Cuatro Lunas" everything is near perfection - the plots of the four stories, the characters, the actors, the music, the editing and the cinematography. The direction is excellent as well. But what really excels is its power to grab and thrill the viewer with stories that are as simple as those of their own life. While mainstream cinema need to thrill with fantastic, complex and sometimes implausible plots, "Cuatro Lunas" shows life as simple, strange and painful as it really is for each one of us. This is one of the 5 best gay themed movies I've watched, and I've already watched a bunch of them.

Worst Gay Film Ever
rodrigoalderete29 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
My review is technical, I am not a bitter homophobic or else.

I had too much trouble to watching this movie to the end. I look at the clock every five minutes.

The dialogs are stupid, cheesy and lack of substance. Artificial is a good word to describe this "attempt to film". The acting is so poor. The directing are the worst I ever seen. This actors can't speak, they whisper instead. 4 stories, 4 yawns. Prostitucion, Sex, Gay boy bullynized, and many more clichés. This movie should be called "Gay Life For Dummies". Is boring to dead and the music is worth the film, boring, boring, boring. This is a gender film, is not very enjoyable, is a soap dish worth for TV, not for the big screen. If you are a sick masochist, you probably enjoy this torture.

Really heart-felt
Red_Identity14 December 2015
I don't think this film looks at really complex themes, but they're resonant, heartfelt themes nonetheless, and coming from a Mexican film it's rare that it looks at the issues that it does. The main cast are all pretty great, some more than others. Some of the stories resonated with me more than others, and some were overall more effective than others. They're simple, but effective. It's great that Mexico is at least letting films like these be made, and I really appreciate its ambition. I hope it's able to be seen by more people because it really deserves it. Overall, very resonant and very well-made. Definitely recommended for anyone interested.

Beautiful, but not perfect
zrta11 July 2015
This film approaches the topics in a great way. It's fantastic that a Mexican film is finally taking this topic seriously. I think reducing the story from four moons to the 2 sides of the moon it would have been better. Two stories well developed would have been great.

Acting was good and the way it was film was nice too. It tried to avoid clichés but it fell in a few. The stories are believable and feel real. You can identify even if you are not gay.

Totally recommended to watch, I hope more film like this keep coming.

We need positive portrayal of gay people especially in Latin American films

I loved it
joelcalzadilla1 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
1.The script is so real.

2. Kid's part is shocking. I was speechless. At the end, you guys were able to put the pieces together just fine.

3. The story of the childhood's friend. It's lovely, sexy and so True. I enjoyed a lot this part.

4. Hetero's might not enjoy this movie, not even a bit. Unless they are so open minded or close to gay people. I understand if they got bore.

5. Professor's part is not that credible. Still it is a good fiction to watch.

6. The Guy from Spain is so lame. Typical person that does not know what to do in Life. From movie perspective, Excellent Story.

Two thumbs Up!!!!!!!!!!

Five moons, Six moons, Seven moons.....
gasket36016 June 2019
....only to say that I so heartily agree with sentiments expressed about why gay films in the US couldn't be this good. IT IS BECAUSE the US film producers/ writers cater to the lowest common denominator. In a Brazilian movie from 2009, two brothers were arguing over the word jealous or jealousy and asks for clarification: adjective or noun? American audience reaction: HUH? 90% of them couldn't tell you one from the other much less identify subject and a verb. This is NOT a film of sleaze or a boring regurgitation of previous (boy frustrated knew when he was 12 of his orientation, the harassments of classmates, makes the mistake of getting married to cover up and the final divorce to run off into the sunsets with a stud muffin met at the bar one evening). The writers did not draw on obscenity for emphasizing points. I am exhausted watching the same-old-same-old story of coming out. This was an absolutely refreshing film that I would watch again. It doesn't all come out roses, neither does it end in a predictably unrealistic twad of scripts/books that should have ended up on the cutting room floor long before being made into a film. Put it simply, it is genuine. I will watch this one again and even maybe again.

Exceptionally good film
laduqesa7 October 2023
I've had this stored for watching for several weeks and decided to sit and watch it tonight. I didn't know what sort of treat I'd be letting myself in for. I immersed myself in the film and was engrossed completely. I'm glad I didn't get any phone calls or messages as they wouldn't have been answered.

The title is a reference to four of the phases of the moon - waxing (the story of the schoolkids), quarter (the college guys), full (the established 30 something couple), waning (the poetry professor who is fascinated by a straight rent boy).

This was such a good idea and the fact that the stories were being told simultaneously but are not intertwined (the characters of each separate story never speak to each other) made the tension and interest more acute.

There was some good acting from attractive cast members. I particularly liked Antonio Velasquez playing Hugo, easily the horniest and hunkiest player.

The stories were true to life and resonant as microcosms of different problems and stages of the gay experience. That the film was set in Mexico was important. This could never have been an American film. It was too original.

I'm so glad I got round to seeing this. I definitely recommend it.

Awesome film
diegomorgansummers26 October 2020
Love movies where they have several different independent stories that intersect in some way. And these deal with gay characters of several different generations. Really interesting to see how they all dealt with it and the other things happening in their lives.

Great acting and characters. Loved it!!

seductive
Kirpianuscus29 September 2015
in fact, not only for the stories . but for science to transform each in universal message. in the most delicate/inspired manner. for the acting. and for the feeling to discover every day cases just from the next street. for the web of ages, options and wise solutions. for the image of vulnerability of characters who transforms the film not in a pledge/ portrait /lesson /manifesto but in scenes from reality. a film who seduces. for the rare and admirable manner to be more than a film about a community. for the courage to be different. and to not looking a precise target. because, more than love stories, each level is a sketch of self definition. out of rules. out of ambition to give the right way. and that transforms Four Moons in a real special movie.

Wow Best Mexican Gay Drama Film Ever Seen!
javierubio17 April 2020
Big Stars for this Director, definitively delivered everything, good and real stories , great acting, great direction and If i did not give 10/10 was only for one thing:Even showing 4 stories in 1 movie and making sense of the 4 forms of the moon, i think the pictures and the scenes could be developed in better scenarios with more vivid backgrounds showing how colorful mexico can be, but the 4 stories were very emotional and actually i felt identified with one of them which made me feel back to my past and i truly enjoyed it even the way the end of each story was showed away! My congratulations to this Director and hope he can show more of this kind of gay drama love stories!!

A little suggestion
Xavier_ljl10 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Totally, this is the best gay themed movie I've ever seen in years, which can even rank higher than BBM in my heart.

There was a moment when I see Hugo met with Leo outside the gay bar that I believe these four different storylines will all be linked up in the end, which I believe will make the film more dramatic. But it didn't.

If I was the scriptwriter, I would set a plot that when the father of the gay child went to the hospital to fetch the medicine, he would met with the Hugo couple. Although there probably wouldn't be any conversation, but just a simple eye contacts could mean a lot.

BTW, I heart Hugo. Disloyal as he is, he is real a big feast for eyes. Who knows me?

4 beautiful love stories
wim-vds18 August 2021
4 different stories, 4 different types of love....!

Very few gay movies tell about life as nice, moving and realistic as this Mexican movie... Some of the stories have a happy ending others not, as things go in life.

This little film will stick to your ribs and probably stay with you for a while..... Strongly recommeneded!
