Suspenseful and gripping
Sleepin_Dragon30 August 2018
After a fairly lacklustre start, The Good Neighbour turns into an imaginative, tense and gripping film. A genre let's face it that has been done to death in recent years, I can think of so many similar films, but this one actually does a great job. The scenario is a little different, you get to see two sides of the story, it's more in the psychological drama genre, it's tense and suspenseful. It is very well acted, everyone plays their part well, it would have been easy to overact. The final showdown was good, but I wish they'd have made it a little more suspenseful, it was a little underdone.

Overall I thought this was a very good film, very watchable. 7/10

Good Suspense Drama
hi_im_manic18 September 2016
All minor nuances aside, this film is a prime example of what the standard should be even if it's a lower-budget production. The Good Neighbor has both drama and suspense. At its core, the film is a crime-thriller. It reminded me a bit of "I Am Not a Serial Killer", which was also just released this year. Both are very fine movies that blend genre elements and have skillful writing, directing, acting and editing. They are extraordinarily sophisticated in style and will exceed most viewers initial expectations.

There are teen friends, one whom has wealth and technical expertise at his disposal and his eyes on MIT, and his friend who has plenty of ingenuity and fortitude and interest in social research but is from a "broken home". The pair undertake a social-psychological experiment, and use the grouchy, solitary old grump of the neighborhood as their unwitting subject. For their experiment, they equip the old grumps home with numerous hidden cameras and electrical devices in order to manipulate the grumps home appliances, fixtures, gadgets and such. They are then able to remotely control and view everything that occurs.

They soon realize that the old grump is a rather unusual subject. He has a basement securely locked from the outside, a mysterious visiting woman, no apparent fear towards the extreme tactics they make to convince him he's haunted, and he's unpredictability violent and destructive. One teen begins to regret conducting the experiment, the other one is determined that the old grump is hiding a dark secret. The teens watch, record and attempt to manipulate the old grump for weeks in hopes of revenge, online views, and uncovering the old mans secrets.

Throughout the film there are segments where a prosecutor speaks to and interrogates different people on the witness stand. This makes it clear that the "experiment" didn't play out so well. This film had me hypothesizing and thoroughly engaged. For once, my initial theory was completely off-track.

It's like they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover"
tgarciadiez25 September 2016
After having seen the trailer for this flick, I think many can relate to the feeling that we were going to witness a wannabe 2016 version of "Disturbia". But, to our surprise, this brings a different approach on that "scary, murder-looking neighbor" theme. It's fresh, suspenseful and definitely keeps you always wondering on what that old man really is up to and how these two knuckleheads are keeping things under control, but were they really? The acting by Miller and Gilchrist is good, although nothing out of the ordinary. Kudos to Caan for living up to his name, he really did a good job of pursuing this character. The music throughout the whole film was definitely on point and was to me a very nice touch. Overall, the movie is pretty solid. Give it a watch, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Cool thriller.
deathhawk17 September 2016
I was anticipating this film as the trailer had my eye. Now anticipation is always a dangerous thing with films, as anyone who is a an avid film watcher knows. I can say I was not let down. Caan was in full form, nice to see him showing his chops. The rest of the cast put on a good show, but James was by far the scene thief. The movie keeps the mystery alive and always had me wanting more. It is not to over the top, so you can watch it with someone who is a bit more light hearted when it comes to these types of movies, and that doesn't take away from the film either. I really felt it was a nice vacation from the everyday re-tread movie. I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Check it out.

Passed the time
keoghjeff9 August 2019
Watched this because James Caan was in it. Reviews suggested it would have a Don't Breathe/Paranormal Activity vibe about it and I'd agree.

Two kids surveil and "haunt" Caan as a an alleged social experiment and document it all in a found footage style.

Caan plays the miserable old guy perfectly and still has great presence, pretty good for a "150 year old"!

It moves at a steady pace and rewards you at the end with a solid twist.

Good neighbor, good film.
alexanderstephencraig29 December 2016
To keep it short, very average film but entertaining. All good, convincing acting. Truly a lot of the film is the two leads in a bedroom watching the cameras they put in place of their neighbor. The believable acting and differences in opinion between the characters was entertaining enough for me to watch this film. Unlike Paranormal Activity which is kind of the same concept only this film, The Good Neighbor, has dialogue. The story was cut up between three different time lines that were inserted bit by bit to unravel the complete story and it was executed beautifully. Without giving spoilers, it leads on in such a way that it makes you guess the ending. I personally guessed it wrong again and again and I could not predict the climax of the film but some smaller parts I could. One thing I like in the film were the references to other films and the posters of old films like, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Night of the Living Dead. It does make sense in the film to the main character, Ethan, played by Logan Miller who's character is into film. My favorite part of this film is the very last shot that shows the true nature of one of the characters. But no spoilers so I can't elaborate. I guess you'll just have to watch the film! I watched this on Netflix in my free time and I can't say I wasted my time. I would also recommend renting it but I personally wouldn't purchase this film unless I hadn't yet seen it. It feels like a one time watch but with the realistic performances, maybe I could watch it again.

Late twist saves this otherwise boring and incredulous tale
jethrotroll-308073 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"The Good Neighbor" follows the antics of 2 teenage boys (Ethan and Sean) 'haunting' and surveilling an old man (Harold Grainey) that they dislike, all in the name of conducting a 'sociological experiment', in the hopes of generating a million views on youtube. Eventually, we learn that this just isn't some innocent experiment, and the old man isn't what they thought he was.

The movie opens with a narration of how perception isn't always reality, and that people see only what they want to see. And this is really what this movie is about. The old man that everybody views as despicable and hateful is really just an old man that's hurting from the loss of his wife and wants to be left alone. While the old man's strange behavior may seem psychotic to others, especially to the two voyeur teenagers, in reality it's just the actions of an old man trying to deal with pain and reacting to the paranormal activity, in his own self-destructive way of course. It's an interesting lesson of how outside influences, regardless of how innocent, can have an enormously unpredictable outcome.

However, the antics of these kids isn't so innocent, most especially are the motives of Ethan. He keeps trying to push the old man, even when confronted and challenged by his partner in crime. We soon learn that this 'experiment' has as much to do with revenge as it does a study in human behavior. We learn that there is a history between Ethan's family and Mr. Grainey (very appropriately named I might add), and Ethan's bias toward the old man only fuels his speculation that he is up to no good. Ultimately, Mr. Grainey pays the ultimate price as a result of the actions of the two juvenile delinquents.

I generally found this movie kind of hard to watch because the characters were so unlikable. Ethan, the true villain in this movie, I found to be truly despicable. His cohort Sean has a conscience but isn't able to think on his own and is compelled to be around Ethan because of his own insecurities and social awkwardness. Ethan's mother is so wrapped up in her own world that she basically lets Ethan do whatever he wants. And Mr. Grainey, for better or worse, was made out to be so horrible by the narrative that even when we learn that he's a lonely, albeit mean, old man that garners sympathy, it's hard to put aside the initial feelings about him and his overall bad traits.

However, the climax with Ethan hiding in the house with his gun drawn and Mr. Grainey standing in the same room with his gun drawn is truly a gripping scene, and basically saves the movie from being a total disaster. And it serves as a reminder to us all that we all live in our own perceptions of reality.

A well-made film, taking a professional tilt at a worn-out genre
thekarmicnomad20 December 2016
Some teenagers decide to run an experiment on their grumpy, creepy old neighbour. They decide to see if they can make him believe in ghosts by rigging his house with cameras and tricks.

Now on paper this does not have a lot going for it. It is fairly cheap, has a found footage element and sounds like a rip-off of the Burbs or Disturbia. Well it isn't - this is much more.

For once it makes sense that everything is filmed and the added element of a court case adds a degree of mystery to the film.

The characters and performances are great. The scope of the film is tiny, only a few rooms, so the tight budget is not a problem and everything looks professional.

There is no mass of action or intensity here but I found this movie gripping, intriguing, and some of the back story even a little moving.

I may be in the minority but pound for pound this is one of the best movies I have seen all year.

Cruel kids
loueysmith20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For the most part of this movie, I struggled to actually like the two kids, their characters were very unlikeable.

One seemed to possess more empathy than the other though!

The sentence that these two cruel people got for their actions and what they caused a lonely old man to do, was just pitiful.

They willingly tortured this man, no one made them. They did it for their own self gain.

I literally cried when the old man shot himself, cause I knew that it was in relation to that bell and that it meant something regarding his late Wife, before the movie even explained what the bell meant.

How two people could be okay with the cruel torture of an old man who just wanted to be left alone, is beyond me.

A large portion of this movie is pretty boring, from a movie perspective to be honest, I watched it to the end as I was curious how it all ended up in court. I actually thought that it would have been Ethan who shot him (given he took a gun) with him having such a hate for him, had it in his head that this old guy was just bad, even knowing he'd helped his own Mother all those years ago.

But I knew when Grainey had the gun and looked at the bell, what he was going to do.

It's a very sad end to a torturous movie.

It's not all boring as such, but not much happens in it really.

I can't recommend this movie, not because it isn't good, because I wouldn't sit through it again, as I'd struggle to again watch an old man be cruely taunted by two kids.

Surprisingly good and hats off to another great James Caan performance
randymcbeast16 September 2016
I had pretty low expectations coming into this film. It had a 6.6 rating and wreaked of a legend of an actor just picking up another paycheck on his way out. Gladly, it was none of that.

I guess I've just been burned by DeNiro lately and the lame flicks he continues to pile up in his golden years, and even James Caan has been in some bad ones, but Caan killed it in this one and created yet another memorable role.

The film was well done and very suspenseful but even more than that it will appeal to all generations. The new social media craze driven teens, the struggling adult split family scenarios, and the classic elderly struggles and nostalgic themes.

Hats off to a brilliant production and to Caan the legend. This one is definitely worth the watch. Oh, and BobbyD, take a lesson from your Godfather buddy and stop already with the crappy films.

A rare time when the IMDB rating is accurate
mtyducs20 June 2018
I think the IMDB rating is dead on with this movie. Nothing special but definitely entertaining enough to the point you want to see what happens next.

Plus how you can you not like the main dude after Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse?

Don't waste your time
lilydavis-4613011 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
*** Spoilers

It's really too bad James Caan's talent was totally wasted in this movie. The main characters are so absolutely annoying. I watched this movie on Netflix, the caption was the kids spying on Caan would get a comeuppance but it never happened. I kept waiting and waiting and wanted to give up on this movie but was waiting for Caan to show these kids up but nothing. The ending was totally dissatisfying. This movie reminded me of the tragedy at Rutgers University where the gay college student killed himself and the kids responsible got a slap on the wrist. Perhaps this was what the writer(s) wanted but it was just very dissatisfying. These kids were murderers and got away with it.

Very good albeit brutal and with caveats
bgaiv24 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The cast is very good and it plays well.

The courtroom parts sprinted through are weak and feel out of place. I think it's pretty obvious from the get-go that this experiment will go south. Plus, the courtroom parts aren't played well.

It gets insanely brutal when you realize what the old man is going through and what the boys are doing to him. It's quite heart breaking, and it's really the meat here. It's very sad but it does feel really real which makes it worse.

The Guilty Cleared
compugor22 March 2019
Way too much of the film portrays nothing much more than two irksome punks in their pranking glory; but as it plods to a head, it is revealed that one of them is a loathsome sociopath leading the way to tragedy. Excellent acting, especially by James Caan as the crotchety old man with a bitter edge whose character develops powerfully. This movie insightfully examines weighty subjects including human depravity, broken family, peer influence among youth, terminal illness, lost love and loneliness among the aged, and of course ethics and justice (not in the horror genre). This is not an uplifting story, and the ending is somewhat disturbing, leaving a lot to be thought about.

Points for originality
will-0519621 March 2018
Pretty hard to review this without spoilers, but let's just say it does a pretty good job of leading you down the garden path, then abruptly switching on the lights and you find yourself somewhere you didn't expect to be.

The mystery here is intriguing enough to keep you watching as it unfolds, but there were some stretches of seemingly unnecessary padding, especially the interactions between the two protagonists. Some "get on with it already" moments. But I had to know where this was headed, so the film did enough good things to keep me wondering. You will need to forgive a few moments of implausibility to enjoy this one... the film might have benefited by showing how they set up their fake haunting pranks.

The prosecuting attorney, by the way, looked exactly like an actor portraying a prosecuting attorney on TV, rather than an actual prosecuting attorney, if you know what I mean. Back to acting school, lady.

Worth watching if you can look past a few flaws.

Waste of time
wettervik8 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Really?

This movie is a complete waste of time. The premise sounded interesting, but the plot leaves you utterly unsatisfied. The so-much-wished-and hoped-for twist, like e.g. the "good neighbor" himself turning into the prankster or something of the like, it never comes.

Instead, we get

  • a foreseeable plot, no real twists;

  • boredom to the extreme, with endless pointless conversations between typical 2016 teenage boys;

  • extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY unlikable lead characters, i.e. said boys;

  • hours of utter stupidity: Main character carries a gun when entering the neighbor's house to fix a camera... I mean, really;

  • most annoying of all: A movie that only for a very short amount of time takes advantage of the entire screen estate; mostly we see a small box with black stripes not only at top and bottom, no, but also left and right. OK, we get it, it's the image of a camera, but wouldn't the text on the screen suffice to explain that?!

  • a fantastic James Caan, who does his best to save this wreck from sinking - albeit unsuccessfully.

A real confirmation for my feeling that movies from around 2005 and later with high probability suck, despite the names on the cast lists.

A surprisingly decent movie
rosspatrick-26-44564017 September 2016
This movie was a great surprise, I didn't know anything about it but found it on iTunes and took the gamble as the trailer was intriguing. It did not disappoint, what could have quite easily been another shaky cam mess of a home footage film turned out to be a real gem. This film builds nicely and despite the simple plot does a great job keeping you on the edge of your seat. The film is also edited in such a way that it keeps you guessing but then slowly feeds you the tid bits to keep you going. At no point was I bored watching this movie although I was worried it would be a bit of an Americanised college "bro" movie 5 minutes in, stick with it and enjoy where this goes. The film is based in two houses and given the limited location you'd think it would be quite easy to get bored by this however the director seems to ramp the tension up and down in all the right ways. I can't recommend this enough and it had my girlfriend in tears. Well worth a watch!

Good Neighbor Meets Bad Apples
AudioFileZ17 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is a plodding movie. I thought about quitting it several times. It had a feel of a low-budget flick that could go no where at times. But, it had James Caan. Caan brings something, in my experience, to every role I've seen him in over the years. I think he was the reason I stayed with it.

Two teens with too much down time to which one is a off-center progenitor of the other who is the super nerdy rich type. It's that kind of combination that might spawn the next Apple or Charles Manson cult. Starting out in a kind of ignorant blind prank mode the two agree to pick on an old curmudgeon neighbor by wiring his house with audio and video bugs and throwing in some electronic disrupting devices for good measure. The darker, but much more charismatic, of the two, Ethan, wants to make a movie of an old man thinking he's being haunted by a poltergeist. The more vexed and nerdy one, Sean, gets reluctantly on-board. Ethan keeps pushing Sean to a more uncomfortable level as he sells the old man as being some kind of a monster who is up to something nefarious. As the movie progresses the emptiness, and the dark core, of Ethan begins to slowly come out.

As mentioned there were times I thought the movie plodded along so slowly, perhaps, I should give up. I mean James Caan's dialog in the whole affair was, maybe, ten sentences. But, Caan brings something to a role that I just want to watch. His Grainey character was a model of restraint making the man all the more mysterious. It was clear while he wasn't speaking volumes there were wheels spinning out inside of the man. It all culminates in a way I really didn't predict and looking at the character who is struggling at the end of a long journey it resonated. It put the two youths in perspective too with one being truly dangerous in the guise of cute smart ass with the other being the ultimate awkward follower. While this movie is only marginally good, it's better in it's the final sum which explores how sinister, even seemingly innocuous, choices can create a truly horrific outcome. There's a wanton smile right at the end that sums it all up amazingly well.

The Bad Movie
chicagopoetry17 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains SPOILERS but it doesn't matter because you shouldn't waste your time seeing this anyway, LOL.

Just when you thought the found footage genre couldn't get lower, we get "The Good Neighbor"--a micro-budget film about an old man being stalked by his teenage neighbors who illegally spy on him with cameras and try to convince him that his house is haunted. The premise sounds okay, I suppose, but unfortunately this movie is so boring you'll wish it had more scenes of "The Good Neighbor" snoozing in his chair.

Why is this crap called The Good Neighbor? It isn't about the old man being a good neighbor or a bad neighbor or any kind of neighbor at all. It's about some spoiled brats tormenting him with video surveillance and creating a fake haunting to create a documentary that, even if it was completed, would have been so illegal that they'd never be able to release it to anyone. What a plot. Why not call it "The Bad Neighbors"?

Let's get straight to the chase. The acting is horrible. And I mean horrible, like first year acting school horrible. The writing is also horrible. These kids who live next door to this old man supposedly have all this technology to create the illusion that the old man's house is haunted, but they do nothing with it. Sure, a screen door slams (did they install a motor to it?), and the lights flicker, and the radio goes on and off, and, well, that's about it. Wouldn't this have been a gem if they took it to the limit and actually made furniture move around ala Poltergeist (as they suggested they could do) or even project holograms of ghosts or some other crazy stuff? Wouldn't that turn into something mind boggling? But no. Instead, they turn the heat off on the poor old man and shatter his window. Lucky he didn't die of pneumonia! Good job.

James Caan is great here and that's why I'm giving this crap fest a two instead of a zero. Please don't tell me this is James Caan's "comeback role". He's 76 years old and has had a distinguished career and doesn't need any "comeback". Here he does his best Michael Caine impersonation and it's actually solid work. Too bad it is lost in this drivel of a film, that's not about him but rather about beer swigging teenagers who could use a good spanking. I'm just going to assume someone involved in this mess was James Caan's great grandson or something so that I don't keep wondering why he agreed to be part of this garbage.

And the plot. Uggh. Apparently there's only one cop in this town because every time something happens, just this one cop shows up. And he's a stereotype. As is the Asian prosecuting attorney. As is the judge. As is the big crowd of people and media mob outside the courtroom after the trial, a trial that involves the death of some loner old man that nobody cared about before he died yet suddenly the entire world seems to be on the courtroom steps in support of him. LOL. As are the titles to the chapters as if this two penny film is as important as some big budget Quentin Tarantino epic.

This movie might have been saved with some final surprise: like the corpse of the boy's father rising up through the old man's basement floor or something similar to the end of Friday the 13th or Carrie. But no. They were too lazy to even think up an ending. Instead we get a long shot of the snotty nosed little brat who orchestrated the entire thing standing on the court room steps as he's surrounded by a stereotypical mob consisting of, and I'm not kidding, someone from every ethnic background on the planet. I can't even go on, lol. I think you get the picture. Two stars. Probably the worst movie I've seen this year.

One of the best thrillers/movies I've seen in a long time
jtindahouse23 September 2016
It's rare to find a movie that achieves excellence in as many aspects as 'The Good Neighbor' manages to do. It works as a thriller, a low-level horror, a drama, a comedy and a mystery all at once and is equally brilliant in all of these regards. I was really quite blown away by it. The film begins with a thought-provoking voice-over (that will play into things later in the film obviously) and I thought to myself, if the writing is half as excellent as that voice-over alone, we could be in for something very special here. Sure enough, the thought process that has gone into the writing here is outstanding and makes for a very fine movie.

The less you know about the story going in (as I myself knew next to nothing) the more you will enjoy this. It catches you off guard time and again. The acting is brilliant too which really helps make the experience just that bit more enjoyable. James Caan in particular shows he still has it. The man is captivating to watch.

If you break almost any film down into three parts, the beginning, the middle and the end, it will fail in at least one of those areas. 'The Good Neighbor' however, doesn't. The beginning sets the film up perfectly, the middle is intense and intriguing and the ending is really quite a beautiful thing that most Oscar nominated films would be happy to put on the screen. This was the closest I've been to giving a film a '10' rating in a long time.

James Caan in a solid comeback role; the rest, including the movie, bleak,anti-climatic, with a morale to the story that deserved better treatment.
EddieRade16 September 2016
Heard some say that this movie is comparable with a much more applauded and successful film with a similar, home invasion plot. In deed, whoever saw Don't Breathe first and The Good Neighbor later on, will make that comparison, but never for praising the later as being superior to the first. At least, in my view, much of the disappointment comes from the anti-climatic resolve to the suspenseful, thought-provoking general pace of the movie. It grows in questions being unanswered and it makes it uncomfortable for the viewer to figure out what is happening with and around the main character, superbly played by a returning, old-fashioned character actor, like James Caan. He does make for this film not being a failure but not even him can make it shine above his own acting skills. Perhaps I got to hopeful with this movie, to pretentious, after seeing the before-mentioned fantastic thriller that got so deliberately close to a genuine crime-horror blend that makes it a clear nominee for instant cult classic status. Still, this movie lacks guts, plays it to safe, while the two boys are being just stupid and so are their roles. I got hopping that both would eventually wind up dead. Not the case, unfortunately. As it sums up, you are clearly let down by the unfolding, wanting more and being right about it. As for the morale, this movie was not the best vehicle for it, and it should receive greater attention and promotion in possible future installments of this otherwise very present and troublesome issue: teenagers, young adults and the potentially harmful things they do for fun.

1 out of 10- let me explain why
akjea-4122022 October 2016
this is my very first review because I never felt the need to critique a movie I have always kept my opinions to myself. However, this movie was so LAME I felt it was my duty to inform my fellow movie lovers. This movie had the potential to be so great. Plenty of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, but the stupidity and lack of effort behind the story line completely ruined it. By 30 minutes in, I was almost sure this movie was fantastic, another 30 and I was ready to fast forward to the end because I couldn't stand one more minute of stupidity. I recommend seeing this movie never!! The acting was not the problem, I enjoyed the actors and what they were portraying. This movie had too many moments I yelled out loud that it was stupid and unrealistic.

Do all the secrets worth unfolding!!!
Reno-Rangan24 January 2018
This is really refreshing. Something rare and unpredictable film in a thriller. Nice characters and the setting where all the story takes place. This is about two teenagers secretly trying to video document one of their neighbours after judging his character through several events of his life. So they place hidden cams in his house, expecting something twist to happen. As the story goes on, they face various troubles and what result they get in the end was a shocker.

I think nicely written film. Not much fuzz about the characters or any events. Though there were some scene that puts the views on the edge of their seats. Overall a nicely made film, either quality or the quantity, totally acceptable. The actors too were good. The kids and then the Jame Caan. The suspense was the backbone of the film. It succeeded on that, but don't anticipate anything bigger. It is a simple, small thriller that's surely worth a try.

Great Movie Showing James Caan is still A Great Actor.
lederman-michael25 September 2016
This was a great movie right up until the end where it seemed to lose itself. Parth thriller, part supernatural, mostly realistic. More a condemnation on today's youth and our justice system.

I suggest anyone looking for a movie with all the chills and thrills of a thriller along with some deeper psychological meaning this is the movie for you. Most impressive was James Caan who shows an inner strength while being either terrifyingly cruel or warm and sympathetic all at the same time.

The rest of the cast was excellent but then James Caan really was the focal point and his acting is every bit as powerful as anything hes done.
